Unofficial Minecraft Thread

Notch updated the server software for Minecraft yesterday, as well as adding a craftable compass that points to your current spawn point, very useful if you built your home near your spawn point.

That's strange, because I did just download the server software last night, and since I ran the launcher I'm pretty sure that I'm on the most updated client too. I honestly have no idea what could be wrong.

Either that, or just password if at all possible.

A password is basically necessary if you want to get anything done. On the server I used to play on there would be so many griefers destroying our stuff during the day that we eventually had to make a "jail" of sorts out of indestructible blocks.

I was setting up a server last night and I have that exact error. Even resynching the time does nothing, nor does making firewall exceptions or messing with my antivirus, I even did the port forwarding perfectly. I think it's just a software bug on Notch's part, to be honest.

I was on couple servers today and they where fine. Is your Java updated?

Which error message you got?

You can download the game now. You just can't log in with an account until you buy one.

You need to buy the game before downloading it.

Yeah, once you pay you just return to the minecraft site and as long as you're logged in you can download it.

EDIT: How do you grow trees? I've placed some shrubs in glass, but they don't seem to want to grow.

They will grow, but it takes time. They also need a certain amount of free space above them, and they need some light. They also require that the cube planted on is dirt. I once built an entire fort out of trees. I just started planting them all around, then decided to plant trees on top of trees on top of trees. They blocked out the sun on the bottom of the fort, and it was awesome when I climbed up on the canopy.

I was just deep..deeeeeeeeeeeeeep underground and I found an area that had some sort of caged fire sitting on top of moss covered cobblestones. It also had a chest with some loot in it and an infinite zombie spawn next to it, no matter how many torches I placed next to it. There were a ton of ores an coal a little further back but that damn zombie just kept respawning so I had to flee.

I can definitely say this game was worth every penny.

If you're putting blocks over them, make sure to stick in some torches for light. I know glass is see through but I dunno if it lets in the light required for plant growth.

Trees are only growing in one small section of the greenhouse just now. They were MASSIVE though, so I'm going to put a roof on then dangle some torches from the ceiling. How close do the torches need to be to the shrub for them to grow? And do shrubs need to be placed a certain distance apart?

I bought this game yesterday, after watching a couple of X's Adventure videos. This game is great, a real addiction I think.

At the moment, I am building myself a nice large fortress near my starting cave. Constructed out of cobblestone, since it is plentiful. I am going for a Medieval-style castle and it is beginning to take shape. I have one tower up, which I am using for my storage chests, smelter and workman bench. In this tower, I have quite an extensive mine going (this is what I do during the nights, work on my mine), and while I have been going down for quite a while, I haven't encountered too many iron or coal spawns. I find the occasional ones, but they are few and far between. I've been moving down at probably a 30 degree angle, so that is why I am not encountering redstone or lava yet.

Also, in your guy's games, are those explosive green guys excessively common during the night? I don't venture out because just looking from my tower I can see at least 10 of them around my castle and they pack quite a punch. They tend to disappear by late-morning which is good, but it makes going out right after sunrise treacherous, I've died a couple of times because of those bastards. I almost drowned earlier today as well, was digging for sand and accidentally opened of a way for the water to get into. I only had a couple of oxygen bars left before I surfaced. And now my hole is full of water :( Might just find a way to drain that portion of the lake (if possible?), so I can dig freely.

Best $13.50 I have spent in a while.

How large is the world exactly? I know each are unique, and I have heard the generated landmass is a 1/3rd the size of the Earth but I am a bit iffy on that.

I was just wondering if there was any 'Hidden Fun Stuff' in this game. Some of you should know what I'm talking about. If you've played Dwarf Fortress.

Don't think so.

Would be nice if the game also had Adamantine hidden somewhere down deep to forge weapons with. :D

A magma sea at the lower levels would be fun too. Shame Minecraft's underground is only 60 blocks deep (if you take sea level as the surface), so you can't get super deep. I'd love to find a giant underground cave 200 blocks down...

Righty - we have an up and running server! (I hope). I'm running it through Hamachi to avoid a few problems:

Hamachi Details:
Name: BGSF Minecraft
PW: Creeper!

Once in the Hamachi you can join the server by connecting to my Hamachi IP and using the default port (25565), on the multiplayer screen enter it in the format ":25565"

Oh, and for those of you that don't like snow, just run further away, it ends and becomes sunny. Also enemies are turned on, you can only kill them with fire so go find some flint and iron!

... 8X the landmass of Earth?! That is absolutely insane. And the fact it all fits into a 4mb file is astounding.

It's all randomly generated - the .exe just needs code to create the world. The actual world is in your save file, which you'll notice as you play and explore gets bigger and bigger.

Well, its generated as you go along. So if you ever get the chance to explore the entire landmass, the filesize it gonna be pretty big.

Ah, right, should have realized that...

I don't think there is a chance at all of me exploring it all. I haven't even left the area where I started, and I don't foresee myself travelling to far in the near future. Maybe once I get some diamond armour and weapons.

I've never used Hamachi before... But I installed v 1.0.3.0 or something, at the same second I installed it I could not connect to internet via Firefox.

Can someone help me out, I really want to play this online.

Fixed the password, I had left the password confirmation dialogue open :s

@saurok - Hamachi acts as a virtual LAN so I'm not sure why you couldn't connect to the internet via firefox. It should state that you are connected to 2 network, your normal network and Hamachi which would appear as local.
