Unofficial "I Never Knew..." Thread #3

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 10:52 am

I had never played a character that did not go to Riverwood first so I assumed only Alvor taught it. My last character started out at another location due to Life another Life, Alternate Start mod so I went to Whiterun first. And I don't mean smithing trainer, I mean the smith giving the tutorial on smithing. Was very refreshing to get taught by someone else without a woman walking by saying "Your pretty, I'll give you that. Just stay away from my husband Alvor." after my character spent the day sweating from the heat of his forge fire and covered in coal dust.

And I always smith. Its fun and I like the sense of accomplishment from making my own armor from the stuff I find instead of buying it. So I always do the smithing tutorian and sell back to them what I made to pass the quest.

I just learned in another thread that you can equip a mining pick and manually swing at mineral veins to mine them. No need to use the overly long animation by activating it.

It's. so. amazing.

Dual-wielding mining picks is even amazing- - - - - er! You're an ore extractin' machine.

I never knew until a few days ago that the random encounter of a horseback noble being guided by an imperial soldier actually stop at towns and stay in the inn. One spawned on the road down the hill toward Whiterun from Riverwood while I was out fishing for Salmon Roe. So after like ten minutes or so I return to the Riverwood inn to do some alchemy and find both the noble and the imperial soldier inside.

I've seen Talsgar the Wanderer hanging out at inns and making song. I've also seen the homeless farmer and his wife making stops.

Actually, if you do this and use the elemental fury shout, you're a mining god.

My son taught me how to do this, and it was so funny I wished my Xbox had a video capture. My Lakeview sure has ample supplies of clay and stone at this point.

I believe the Unofficial Patch puts Heimskr in jail where he belongs after the Imperials win the Battle of Whiterun. And it also frees Brand Shai in Riften after a couple of days.

Yep, the USKP puts Heimskr down in the dungeon. I went in there for "In My Time of Need" and heard a familiar ranting coming from one of the cells.

It's almost worth doing the Legion questline to see that!

Almost.

Just got done setting up a character after wiping my PS3. I went to level 15, got the Oghma Infinium and got myself back to where I was before the HDD crapped out on me. Updated to 1.09 installed all of my DLC..... Man next weekend if I get off I will have a great day or two....!

Has anyone found anything interesting in any of the DLCs yet?

I discovered the Spriggan that Our characters can free from Snapleg Cave will head toward Eldergleam Sanctuary, and (at least in My Game) will remain neutral to My character.
As far as things in the DLC, there are a lot of non-human Followers in Dragonborn,
Steadfast Dwemer Spider
Steadfast Dwemer Sphere
Rieklings
Spider minions with Spell Effects, a player can have up to six extra followers that do not count as slots, they are summoned by Scrolls that can be made by mixing ingredients in a device.

Word of Caution, some new Spells in Dragonborn require minimum Skill Levels to learn the Spell or find the Spellbooks

As with any weapon if you equip a fast weapon in your left hand (ie a dagger) you'll swing your pickaxe even faster.

I just found out that there are harvestable apple trees in Skyrim (there is one in front of the Frostfruit Inn in Rorikstead).

Neato.

Today I learned that hawks and dragons flying overhead are supposed to cast shadows. Yeesh. I turned them off in my .ini back in 2011 because they looked horrid and were too much of a performance hit on my machine at the time. Finally got around to reading some guides for making them look good w/o killing framerate. Quite a difference.

Not sure if this was a glitch, but I saw the headless horseman chasing after his horse on foot lol!

Also, there is a giant near a hotspring directly east of the atronach stone, and nearly straight south of steamcrag camp that seems to have brought his pet mammoth to the hot spring to die and is sitting there looking at it sadly. The giant will also not turn hostile. I think this hot spring area of skyrim is kind of like a skyrim equivalent of an elephant graveyard.

On another note, I wonder how many of these "I never knew" things are actually due to mods. Someone was going on about stabbing someone with an arrow in the last thread, which I do not believe exists in the base game. That sounds more like a killmove mod.

I never noticed so many talos Shrines in the far reaches of Skyrim. There is two in the area of Winterhold.

I've just discovered that the hat that looks identical to the cowl in the inventory, is actually a very nice dark olive green hood if your a male . It looks fabulous with the elven armor and works well with leather. Unfortunatly it's just another cowl for the ladies .

It could be a mod, though I'm not sure. There are certain candles you can actually pick up and stick in your inventory (I found them in the Bards' College). If someone could confirm or deny this on the console versions, you're awesome.

In addition, some enemies are dumb enough to run into the traps set in their own dungeons... repeatedly. A sizable swarm of Forsworn killed themselves by running into their own flame trap yesterday. The Draugr I can understand, but when it's a bunch of Breton hedge wizards falling victim to their own magical traps it's just silly.
