Unofficial "will my PC/laptop run Skyrim" thread, #1

Post » Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:18 am

Today I did a search and there was nearly 174 topics that included the words "will my computer run skyrim". Im here to stop multiple threads showing up, so if you have a question ask it here. I don't know alot about pc specs but alot of people here do so ask away!

P.S check this website to see if your pc will run Fallout 3/New Vegas, if it reaches over the maximum bar, it will most likely will, but this is not 100% accurate
http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/intro.aspx

A thread from someone else who set out some guidelines http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1203106-predictions-for-skyrims-pc-specs/page__p__17935959__fromsearch__1#entry17935959
Spoiler
THESE ARE GUIDELINES. Wait for the official requirements to actually purchase an upgrade. It could turn out that they do a very good port, and the specs will be HIGHER or LOWER. As belenos stated we have NO idea about what the engine is like.

I have seen a couple of threads about people asking about their systems and if they will play skyrim or not, so I thought I would make this.
Skyrim will support DX 11, for those who don't know.
These are rough estimates based on my experience with similar looking games in the past, although we have yet to see pure PC gameplay footage, then I may edit this thread.

For those who are wondering about the specs, this is what I think, all judged by the gameplay trailer. The resolution i'll be using for the following judgements is 1680x1050. Bear in mind that the trailer was done with the 360, texture resolution will be a bit higher on the PC, and there will be anti aliasing. 4x is all you need to get rid of the jaggies.

HDD : Hard to estimate, could see it going up to 8-12gb

BIG edit : Changed lots of the graphics cards. They are all similar to before but wanted to make sure its all right.

For those who a cheaper machine to play smoothly on lower specs, you want :
CPU : Any dual core. Cheapest of which is the lowest spec AMD Athlon II x2.
RAM : 1GB, 800+mhz DDR2. To clear this up, DDR2 is all you NEED, but if you are buying new, go DDR3 ofc.
GPU : Nvidia 9600GT / GT 220 / GT 240 / GT 430 / 8800GS / ATI 4670 / 3870 / 3850 / X1950XTX / 2900XT / 5570

The ATI 5670 and the Nvidia 8800GT sits in between here.

For those who want to play the game on Medium/Highish graphics, Im talking about high texture detail, lowish shadows, near max view distance :
CPU : Again, any dual core.
RAM : 2-4GB, 800+mhz DDR2.
GPU : Nvidia 9800GT / 8800 Ultra / GTS 450 / GTS 250 / GTX 260 / ATI 5750 / 4850 / 3870x2 / 4860 (dual gpu chip)

The ATI 5770, 4870, Nvidia GTX 260 go here.

For those you want to play on max graphics.
CPU : A good dual core. A higher spec Intel I3 / Lower spec Intel I5 / AMD Phenom II x2 / Any intel wolfdale's.
RAM : 2-4GB, Higher speed DDR2, although any speed DDR3 recommended (especially if your buying new)
GPU : Nvidia GTX 275 to the GTX 285 / GTX 460 1GB / GTX 470 / GTX 560 / ATI 5830 / 4890 / 6850 / 6790 / 4850x2

If your going to have a lot of mods, I'm talking 20+, then you probably want a quad core, like a Phenom II x4 / Athlon II x4 / or an I5 2500 / I5 750
I cant guarantee this though. It could just be that lots of mods strangle the gamebryo engine, in which case wont be a problem with the creation engine. We won't have much details on the engine itself until it is released and modders take it apart.

If you play at a 1024x768 resolution, then you will probably be able to play with.. : Nvidia 6800GT / ATI 4630 / 5450 / the lower 3xxx cards etc, although I cannot promise these will work.

And here's some more advice. In 8 months time, I don't think my estimated specs will have changed, however, hardware will (not maybe, WILL) be cheaper. So don't go buying skyrim upgrades now, wait half a year.

If you feel I am wrong/have a different opinion about this, feel free to voice it although I'd like to avoid any hostility.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, or put them in the thread.

If your in America, the best place to buy computer parts or a ready made computer (by a long shot) is newegg.com
If you in the UK like me, PCspecialist.co.uk is a fantastic website where you can build a PC exactly to spec.
Pixmania.co.uk is also good for individual parts.

MODS EDIT:
General notice to begin with: at this point the system requirements are not yet known. Anything is speculation and conjecture at this moment. Asking about the requirements can yield an educated guess at best.

- From now on we're going to use this as the system requirement and speculation thread for both PC-systems and laptops.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We'll also use this thread for general speculation regarding the anticipated and expected system requirements; be it minimum, recommended and optimum.

- This thread can also be used to ask about possible and potential upgrades that people plan or may want to make.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

- Once the official system requirements have been made public by Bethesda, we can change the topic to 'Will my system run Skyrim?'.

- Since this is unofficial, there are no guarentees and the administration may decide to change the course of this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report fuction to report these new threads to the moderators.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

Thanks in advance. :)

btw i typed this on my phone

People have tried to make a thread like this in the past.....it never works out. And Canyourunit is a very inaccurate test. I wouldnt trust it for most games. Example:It told people that they could run Fallout3 with an Intel Integrated Graphics chipset. The Intel video chipsets only support shader model 2.0......Fallout3 needed 2.0b in order to run.

LOL are you really worried, or joking?

7680x1600 is a pretty demanding resolution, but are you able to run most other recent games at that resolution with your hardware?

1GB NVIDIA GTX 460, GTS 450, AMD 5770 - any of those three can deliver playable framerates at 1920x1080 resolution and in the US they cost between $90-150

I'm not worried at all i know skyrim wont be technically demanding in any way at all. (it's console focused development herpderp) Hell i'm not even worried for Arma 3 (due to my dedicated phyx) or BF3.

Most games can run at 2560x1600p no problem; its the tri monitor setup that will get them herpin and derpin.

but as for tri
ARMA 2, BFBC2, Witcher 2, Crysis 1, Crysis 2, Metro 2033, Supcom 1, Shogun 2, STALKER and a whole bunch of other new and older games; hell i have freespace 2 running at that..of course some games take some tweaking in config files to get up and working.

And yes i can run ubersampling on the witcher 2.

Well apparently I can run F:NV on full settings and also I can run Fallout 3 on full settings so... I guess I should be able to run Skyrim at medium settings which wouldn't bother me.lol *Goes off to pre-order PC version*.lol

Can You Run It is not a good site. I can guesstimate the following.

Yes if CPU is:

-An Intel dual core E6600 2.4GHz or better
-An AMD dual core Athlon II or better 2.5GHz or better

Yes if GPU is:

-A Nvidia GTX 7900x2 or 8800 GTS [G80] or 8800GS, 9600GT or better.
-An ATI HD3850 or better.

OK, my contribution is what I think will happen with my (old) rig: I'm gonna start the game on default settings (i.e. medium - without touching anything in the video settings) and will get a decent experience. Not the best, as there will be some heavy moments where I'll experience choking, but a decent one. That said, here's my rig:

Intel Core 2 Duo 6400, 2.13 Ghz, 2128Mhz
3 GB RAM (I assume it's DDR2)
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT, 512MB
IDT High Definition Audio

I think that's representative of somewhere between a middleish to bare minimum setup.

eee pc

CPU: 900 Mhz Intel Mobile Celeron
Video: Intel GMA 900
Display: 7" LCD widescreen at 800x480
Storage: 4GB internal flash
OS: Custom Xandros-based Linux
RAM: 512MB
Optical drive: None
Networking: Atheros AR5007EG wireless, 10/100 ethernet

I know it will run skyrim no problem, but will i be able to max out? if not i might buy a 1GB RAM, what do you think?

The funny thing is, we don't know the answer. But I do know my PS3 can run it. Problem solved for my part

I do have a PC that runs oblivion with a ton of mods, both graphical and city and environment changing, which i'm not sure will run Skyrim. But I'm not going to ask if you think it will ujust yet, perhaps in early 2012 when there might actually be some research done about it I might. :teehee:

Because I'll be too busy playing Skyrim on PS3 to care about anything for weeks after I get Skyrim. Ha! :D

You don't need a powerful graphics card to run the game at 800x480 resolution.

I know we don't have the official requirements yet, and I know my system can run it just fine, but what are my chances of being able to max this at 1080p?

should be no problem IMO.

you must have played some other recent games maxed out at 1080p with this system, right? Skyrim is not likely to be more demanding than most other recent 2010-2011 games.

But you do need more than an ancient Intel 900 with 512MB RAM. :lmao:

First of all, thanks to the OP and mods for the thread...

Here's my laptop: i7 740qm, 1, 73 Ghz
HD 5730 1GB
4 GB memory

What do you think? Should I upgrade my memory to 8GB for the game?

True, but having a 900Mhz CPU, 4GB of install space, and a Linux based OS is really limiting for games........

Edit- @*shadow* 4GB is more then enough for games, you should run the game fine.
