- Please try to keep this thread for asking about existing setups. Upgrade questions come in the territory with these kinds of threads, but if i drags and fills up the topic, a stop will be put to it. If you want an in-depth PC build/buy recommendation or laptop recommendation, please use the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1541774-the-community-tech-thread-no-152/ instead.

- Do not post here if you are going to brag about where you stand on the GPU list or if you are going to criticize other member's systems. This is not the place to say "I have so and so card and looks like I will totally max this game out hahaha"....or...."ooohhh, my system is so much better than yours!!11!!1!!" Comments like those either clutter up this thread unnecessarily and/or will only get you negative responses. Please keep it to yourself. <_<

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report function to report these new threads to the moderators.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

OFFICIAL SPECS RELEASED! Read Hardware Guide below to see where you stand.

Fallout 4
Desktop Video Card (GPU) List and Performance Level Predictions

(1st Pass, Subject to changes/updates)

Compiled by Tigs ( Tig Ol Bitties)

Notes:

- With the game released now and benchmarks turning up, the requirements are unsurprisingly rather overstated for the game. I've honestly never been a fan of how Bethesda do their system requirement specs. Just in the minimum requirements alone, there are large performance gaps with what's listed. A Phenom X4 945 with a GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit of a step down from a i5 2300 and a Radeon 7870 setup. It doesn't make sense for all of them to be under the same category. Alas,I hope this guide will help some determine where their system/hardware stands and I will update this list accordingly when I find more benches on the reality of what people can get away with hardware-wise.

Here are some benches that have come forth so far:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-fallout-4-performance-anolysis

- I am borrowing a hierarchy list that was compiled by some fine folks at OCN as I find it to be quite accurate, but did add my own edits in between here and there. Modification Notes are added to the list to predict performance levels of this game and these are very subject to change when real benchmarks come forth. http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html is the list borrowed if you are curious. Large credit given to Anth0789, TheSandman, Astroz, NrGx, and J3r3my who helped create and maintain that list. And a big acknowledgement goes out to a swell member that hasn't been here a while, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=members&module=list, who has provided pretty much the layout for guides like these in the past. If you don't see your card, feel free to ask.

- This list does not include CPU performance. Early reports is that the game does run on straight dual-core CPUs (2core, 2 threads), but benefit greatly with quads and higher. Even Intel Dual-Core with 4 threads manages pretty well. The game is very multi-core aware. General guideline is you should be relatively fine to run the game with a chip from one of the following series

- Intel: Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core i3, i5, and i7...reports from users of modern Intel Pentium have been positive as well

- AMD: Athlon X3/X4, Phenom X2/X4, AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, and FX

- Anything less than these may suffer/lag. Celeron, Pentium 4, and Sempron users shouldn't bother playing.

- If you are using a laptop, you can check your GPU and CPU on the following lists to compare with the requirements:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&professional=0&archive=0&dx=0&multiplegpus=0&showClassDescription=1&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&gameselect%5B%5D=336&gameselect%5B%5D=332&gameselect%5B%5D=329&gameselect%5B%5D=316&gameselect%5B%5D=314&gameselect%5B%5D=112&gpu_fullname=1&codename=1&architecture=1&pixelshaders=1&vertexshaders=1&corespeed=1&shaderspeed=1&boostspeed=1&memoryspeed=1&memorybus=1&memorytype=1&directx=1&opengl=1&technology=1&daysold=0
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&restrict_architecture=&maxTDP=&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&archive=0&dx=&condensed=0&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&3dmark06cpu=1&cinebench10_s=1&cinebench10_m=1&cb11_single=1&cb11=1&cinebench_r15_single=1&cinebench_r15_multi=1&superpi1m=1&superpi2m=1&superpi32m=1&wprime_32=1&wprime_1024=1&dhrystone=1&whetstone=1&winrar=1&x264_pass1=1&x264_pass2=1&truecrypt_aes=1&truecrypt_twofish=1&truecrypt_serpent=1&geekbench2=1&geekbench3_single=1&geekbench3_multi=1&passmark_cpu=1&sunspider=1&cpu_fullname=1&codename=1&series=1&l2cache=1&l3cache=1&fsb=1&tdp=1&mhz=1&turbo_mhz=1&cores=1&threads=1&technology=1&architecture=1&64bit=1&daysold=1

Basically just search the card or CPU you have there. If available, The Witcher 3 benchmarks can provide a decent idea of what to expect for the GPU. If not, then the link to your card's description may mention a desktop equivalent that you can cross check back here. The CPU list is a more generalized comparison with benchmark tools to give an idea of each CPUs horsepower. If you cant find what you're looking for, just ask here.

- Intel Integrated Graphic Chipsets are for the most part garbage for gaming. The hardware implementation to handle shaders required for these games are heavily skimped on with older chipsets (predating Intel's HD 3000). These are more meant for business applications and general usage as opposed to gaming. Strong chance you may not be able to run the game. Fallout: FNV and Skyrim allowed some to run the game out of the box, so there might be hope with FO4...but you are better off with something else if possible.

- There are various monitor resolutions out there and the amount of pixels to be rendered does have an effect on performance...the higher the resolution, the more your video card has to work to render all those extra pixels. I can't be bothered to cover settings for each resolution, so I am basing this list on the more common one for gaming these days...1080p (1920x1080). If your resolution is a step lower than this (1680x1050), then your performance will be slightly better than what's indicated in the list. If it's higher, than obviously can be worse....YMMV.

- Lastly, must make mention that Can You Run It websites rarely get PC hardware assessments correct, especially when it comes to the CPU. Their anolysis dont have any understanding of architectural improvements between generations and they merely compare frequency numbers. I wouldnt rely on them or anything similar at all to give a proper assessment.

:)

Without further ado, here is the hierarchy list based on what the reqs are now....

Color Codes:
AMD
Nvidia

Intel

It is a long list, but press ctrl F and a search box should pops up. Simply search the model number of your GPU and click on the 'up/down' or 'find/search' buttons.

Egad!!: I'm fairly certain these will give you at least Ultra Settings. Gets more to the max levels if more near the top of the list.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past, but they've still got some power in them and with the right tweaks, may be able to enjoy FO4. 512MB VRAM cards here would be a concern however and monitor resolution probably would have to be taken way down.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past. This is the area where upgrading should strongly be considered. Or just get it for the XB1/PS4. Generally weak and lacking in VRAM. Settings would likely be turned way down to barely run. The further down this list section you go, the more you really should reconsider playing this game for the PC.

Fuggedaboutit: Cards from years past. These cards either don't have the necessary shader requirements and/or are just too damn old and weak. If you still have one of these, you are so overdue for a new PC or a massive upgrade.

Nope. New card with dedicated memory is the only way. When it gets to the point that your card doesnt have enough VRAM for the game, it will leach from your system RAM....that conversion bogs the pc down rather badly.

I Don't know very much about computer specs so I was wondering if someone could please help me makes sense of the system requirements and tell me if my computer will be able to run fallout 4.

These are the requirements from steam:

  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent
  • Hard Drive: 30 GB available space

And these are my personal system specs:

OS: Windows 7 home premium 64bit

Processor: AMD Phenom™ II X4 965 Processor 3.42 GHz

Memory: 4 GB RAM

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 (Intergrated RAMDAC, Total Memory 3786MB)

I understand that my RAM is too low but are my processor and graphics card okay?

also with 4GB of RAM will I still be able to run the game or will it not run at all? could I use ready boost from a memory stick to get it over the line?

Thank you, everyone, for the help and advise. I ended up going to Best Buy and getting the newest ASUS gaming computer.

6th Gen Intel? Core? i7-6700 processor
16GB Memory
180W + 230W power adapter
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphics

My credit card is threatening to disown me and I'm broke until after the new year (at least). Hopefully this computer will carry me throught this game and the next Elder Scrolls. Now if Amazon would just ship the bloody game!!!

Just wondering if i should upgrade or stick with my PS4.

Currently the system requirements according to PC Gamers is:

Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent
8 GB RAM
30 GB free HDD space
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent

For recommended settings.

As of now, i have

Windows 8.1 64 bit

AMD FX™ - 6300 six-core processor

8 GB RAM

I have space

AMD radeon R7 200 Series

I am really [censored] at system requirements, i have absolutely no clue about what is an upgrade and what isn't.

I believe i have a 450-500 W Power supply, which has limited my options on graphics cards before, i think the best i can get is a Sapphire Radeon 290x or Even a Asus Geforce GTX 960,

although those two i believe are extremely close to the maximum power output, so i don't think it is a safe investment.

I have bought games before which just didn't work, which i ended up buying on console as well. If i have to upgrade each system spec, then i'll probably play on Ps 4 and then gradually upgrade my PC.

P.S. I don't play on minimum settings, it is like buying a game and getting 10% of the games entire value, even though it is a bethesda game and they prefer content over visual display.

You're looking at the recommended system specs and not the minimum ones.

The minimum ones are as follows:

  • Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
  • Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 30 GB free HDD space
  • NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent

Considering you have a CPU over this threshold and what I'm assuming is an AMD 270/270x (Which is the same chip as a 7870), you'll make the minimum requirements no problem. (e; if it's a 260/260x, you're under the minimum specifications but will probably still be able to run the game)

However, you will probably need to play on or close to minimum graphics settings with your setup and I'll need to know the exact make of your PSU and its wattage before I recommend any GPU. Last thing I'd want to do is overload your PSU if it's not a high enough wattage or if it's a no-name branded PSU and have something blow up.

I don't know AMD chipsets well so I can't speak to the processor. The graphics card though I think is below recommendations.

I don't think the PSU is as big a deal as it used to be. a few years back it seemed like any decent card used 500 or more watts. I was shopping for cards not long ago, and unless you go real high end, seems everything in using less than 300 watts these days. I get the impression cards are much more efficient than they used to be.

I would agree with the 900 series of video cards from Nvidia or lower end/older chips, but you're flirting with disaster with a 290x on a 450W PSU. (PCpartpicker says the estimated wattage with a 290x and the 6300 is about 494W, add ripple and fluctuations in power draw and you're maxing out a 500W PSU under full load, something I don't recommend doing at all).

And the manufacturer of the PSU is very important as well. I wouldn't even run a LED let alone a computer off a DiabloTek PSU.

Yes you can run it just fine. Though your graphics card is likely going to force you into the medium range of graphics at 1080p.

Though honestly... and I'm just being blunt here... if you hadn't realized that the only piece of hardware in that rig that you needed to upgrade was your GPU before buying games a second time for the console, than perhaps you're better off not worrying about buying games on PC.

But... you only need to upgrade your GPU if you wish to play at high or ultra. I'm not exactly sure how bethesda tested their system requirements. But I seriously doubt that you need a freakin AMD super-heater to run the game on ultra with anything playable, same for the i7. Same for the GPUs.

You should be fine with an R9-280x, a R9-300 series, or an HD79XX. Similar for Nvidia.

People can definitely learn, we all had to at some point.

However, the requirement for the i7 is quite funny given that the game isn't running DX12. It can probably run just fine off an i3 of the same generation and the 290x for the recommended specs would be overkill for what I've seen in gameplay trailers.

Directx 12 would lower the requirements a bit. It reduces CPU overhead assuming bethesda knows how to work it. But it'll definitely benefit from more cores or hyper threads.

Hello, Hi,

I have the same question, basically.

Is a quad core necessary?

I have an AMD A4 6300 (dual core 3.7Ghz) and a GTX 750.

Everything else is good, 64bit OS, Ram, HDD.

Please don't point out that they aren't paired well to begin with. I know this, man. Why? I was in a rush when I was ordering parts. Mistakes were made. lol

Thanks for any replies.

Technically? It really depends. A dumbed down response related to what you are asking. Yes, it will be pretty much a necessity.

Well, you're meeting minimum requirements except on the RAM. However, 4GB would still get you going probably...its not like the game just won't run with anything less than 8GB, but how well is still an unanswerable question right now. I don't know what this ready boost from a memory stick means, but it doesn't sound like anything worthwhile or effective to do. Just get more RAM if you find you need it.

Looking at low settings at 1080p imo

So you decided with the Asus ROG system. It's an interesting design with a tight fit form factor. Surely a machine that will run the game at Ultra settings.

However, I really wonder how future upgrade-ability will be regarding the video card. I know a GTX 980 can be fitted, but you may run into issues with future video cards down the road. The next Elder Scrolls is a long ways away where both the GTX 970 and 980 will probably be not all that great for it anymore. Nice system, but you may have just limited your options with future video card upgradeability.

You really need to give more details on the video card. There are actually a few R7 200 series cards....265, 260X, 260, 250X, 250, and 240.

The R7 240 is a below low settings card, while the R7 265 can give around medium settings at best.

Also, you need to be more detailed in what power supply you have. Can open up the case to find the sticker label on the psu unit. Report back the brand and model at the very least. If this is an off the shelf OEM PC, then post the brand and model of the PC as well.

The Radeon 290X consumes quite a lot more power than the GTX 960. You may be able to get away with just upgrading one component, but again...need details on the PSU or your PC model.

The PSU should always be a big deal. To me, it's still the most important component in the PC as it can make or break everything in your PC.

Sure, you probably wouldn't need more than a quality branded 650W PSU for the majority of single video card setups today. Even a 500W quality unit can get some people by. But that's just it...do people know whether their PSU is made of decent quality? More than likely not.

OEM vendors often put rather average or less than average PSUs in their systems with cheap capacitors, poor +12V rails, and a wattage rating that is inflated. ITts usually a unit that is enough for the system as-is without any regard to potential upgrades.

There is no official word yet that the game plays well with a straight dual-core chip.

My guess is that the game will still run with dual-core CPUs, but how well is anyone's guess right now.

The GTX 750 isn't that badly paired with the A4 6300, it's just the A4 6300 was a poor choice for a gaming CPU purchase nowadays :P

With a decent quad-core chip, your system would be at medium settings probably. Here's to hoping you get at least low with your dual-core one.

What settings do you think I can run it at with an AMD FX6300, 8GB of RAM, and a GTX 960 2GB.

You will probably either max out or come very close at 1080p.

Hoping to run this at 60fps at good setting with my i5 3570k and gtx 670.
Think I might turn shadow quality and distance to low/medium and turn off Ambient Occlusion/Anti Aliasing.
The rest on High with all extra effects on.
Just letting everyone know that a screen of fallout 4 graphics options has been relased, the menu for those settings is still outside of the game.....

Windows 10
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 3 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 16 GB

Intel Iris Graphics:
Chipset Model:Intel Iris
Type: GPU
Bus: Built-In
VRAM (Dynamic, Max): 1536 MB
Vendor: Intel (0x8086)
Displays:
LED Display:
Display Type: LCD
Resolution:1920 x 1200

I expect that as they do the development work with Nvida the selection of a
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB or better graphics card is the starting point:
With a
Intel Core i7 4790 3.6GHz or better Processor.
I am looking for MOBO recommendations And I hope to do this with
just buying a new mobo with upto date WiFi,
graphics card, 16 gb ram,and a 1 tera SSD and power supply

so Shopping lists for the above gratefully received its been about 10 years
since my last home assembled computer so I am not up to date.

Cheers Windy

I asked on another Gaming forum with lower traffic and was told

to take it to a Hardware only forum and site....

but to open this up for discussion I will repost the reply I got here:

it said that in addition to reusing my Case
keyboard & mouse and display I buy:

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H Motherboard (about $160)
Intel i7-4790 (and good chip cooler ???) (about $350 and ??? $150 for a cooler)
Asus STRX GTX 980 for the graphics card (about $550)
750W Power supply (about $100)
Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB SATA III SSD (about $350)
16 GB of DDR3 ram (about $90)

so it looks like this would cost about $ 1,750 reusing my old tower case
with its DVD Burner and some old Had rd drives for extra storage
If I wanted a new mid tower case it would add another $70 to $100...
Prices from a quick look at NewEgg and rounding up

And other suggestions? $1,500 to $2,000 is the range I am comfortable with.

Unless you plan on overclocking the stock chip cooler is fine. I have a i7 4790k and it runs just fine on a stock cooler unless you overclock it. Overclocking is pretty much the only reason to need a huge cooler.
