Unofficial "Will My PC Run Fallout 4?" Thread

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:20 pm

I built this PC recently, largely in part to my desire to enjoy Fallout 4 at it's best at release.

__

Intel Core i7-4790k (4x4Ghz) (liquid cooled)

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 (4GB)

ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK Motherboard

Samsung SSD for OS and a different one for games

G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1866 (PC3 14900)

__

Recommended specs themselves are an ambiguous matter, for example, The Witcher 3's recommended specs are:

Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3.4 GHz / AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Video Card: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770 / AMD GPU Radeon R9 290

All of which I comfortably exceed yet can't run the game smoothly at all times on Ultra, yet with less than each of those except RAM - my old PC ran Witcher 3 comfortably on medium, with just a few other things turned up a notch. What is recommended even supposed to mean? It can't mean with this or greater you can run it on max, some games, it's not even close.

Any thoughts?

Who knows? Nothing been said about the FO4 game requirements for either minimum or recommended or if there even is an "Ultra".

I've been doing research on PC components trying to figure out what I'm going to get and from what I can tell that's a really good system you've got. I would think it should run it fine, we'll just have to wait till the requirements are announced to know for sure though. Magic Eightball says: "Chances are good."

Yeah, it will definitely run smoothly even on Ultra. I have a very similar (only slightly better) build. I have a EVGA GTX 970 (the next step up from yours), the same i7 processor (also liquid-cooled), same amount of RAM, and I can play a graphically-enhanced Skyrim at maximum settings with faster than 60 FPS.

Funny thing, I actually built my PC last month for the same reason. lol

Since they have not released any PC specs yet, I fail to see how this question can be answered by anything other than an educated guess.

The fact that the OP seems quite aware the specs have not been released makes his question appear to be nothing more than an attempt to brag about his new rig....

Thats what I felt. His rig is almost top of the line, of course it will run ultra; and usually when you build a rig yourself you seem to have some idea of specs and what it will be able to do.

I could have worded it better, but I was actually more interested in people's thoughts about recommended requirements, and how ambiguous they are, their experiences with them and the latest games that push the limits of available hardware. I also avoid learning too much about upcoming games I am looking forward to so I am more surprised, so it seemed reasonable to think that perhaps other people were more aware of the required specs that I was able to find in my brief search. I tried to edit my post to change the title to reflect that, but this is one of those forums that limits what you are able to edit, and I didn't want to double post. Even as new as this video card is, I sometimes wonder if I should consider getting a second one to SLI, but so far that seems to be unnecessary. If you wait too long however, getting an identical card for SLI can be difficult.

I have no care of what random people I will never know think of my PC, and all of you couldn't care less, so boasting didn't even play the smallest role in my post. I think I'd need Raided SSDs and double or triple SLI and probably Titans before I could even think about boasting, even were I that kind of person.. Sorry for the confusion.

If FO4 is anything like Skyrim (which is a good chance, as it's using an iteration of the same engine) then it's going to be fairly light on the graphics demands and fairly heavy on the CPU. Some comments by Pete Hines on the graphics of FO4 are consistent with this.

However, it may be somewhat graphically more demanding than Syrim, in recognition that things have moved on in the last few years, especially the next-gen consoles coming out, so I'd guess it still needs a more powerful GPU than Skyrim would. And definitely more memory. 8GB of main RAM should be plenty, though more can't hurt, but an overclocked CPU will be a definite plus, especially with script heavy mods.

Hey Draithen,

When running games on full specs I always say go big or go home :-)

The i7 4790K is spot on...only thing better is the new 6th Gen i7-6700

Any Z97 Mobo that supports 32GB of RAM is good to go for any game

The GTX 960 4GB card will do very well...if you have the ability to double your card...it will make your future gaming that much sweeter (make sure you have a power supply of 850W+)

DDR3 @ 16GB is good...I personally would go max @ 32GB

Now these are just my personal thoughts...but the rig you have listed below in the comments looks like you will enjoy Fallout 4...

What about my laptop? Asking about MEDIUM-HIGH, not ultra

Specs:

Intel Core i5 4200H 2.8GHz
RAM 4 GB DDR3,
nVidia GF GTX950M 2 GB

will pinch some more ram when possible

cromofo, I would at least double the memory as consoles are already at 8GB. Todd himself has said more memory (on console) is the best thing for their engine.

I plan on getting it for PS4, but since this thread exists, I might as well ask how my laptop would fare for Fallout 4:

Intel Core i7 5500U @ 2.4GHz

RAM 8GB DDR3

AMD Radeon R9 M275 4GB

Per above, more memory would be best (likely the only thing you CAN change in a laptop).

50 days and counting until release, i already have my copy of fallout 4 preordered for PC. (because its just better on PC).

I have been slowly upgrading my PC over the last few months and im at the last piece i need to replace: the Graphics card.

I currently only have a Radeon HD 6800 series in my computer, it served my purposes, & I didn't need anything stronger until now.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for a graphics card to run this game on at least medium with 60fps for under $120?

(i don't have a very large budget at all to spare, hence the cost restrictions)

any help would be appreciated, as i am not at all familiar with these things, and I want to get as many opinions as i can. (that and the person i normally go to for advice with these kind of things isn't here for the next few months :< )

$120 is going to get you the very lowest end of game-worthy cards. If you go up to $160-200 you'll have a lot more options.

Tom's Hardware, "http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-3.html" article. Suggestions for various price ranges.

(Of course, then you can take that suggestion and go to Newegg, or Amazon, or whatever, and see what the best rated/best priced model is in that class.)

This. I was going to suggest a GTX960, but that will run you around $200. Even a GTX950 is going to be about $160. Maybe there's something decent for cheaper in AMD's line-up. I'm not familiar enough with their current cards to make a recommendation.

What kind of graphics card do you have? That will be very important. Thing is though, we don't know the system requirements so anything we tell you is speculation.
