Unofficial "Will My PC run Fallout 4?" Thread #3

In that situation, If you have a decent enough CPU it will helps a lot.

The minimum requirements for the GPU are not very well formulated.

Keeping the AMD 7870 as a reference, the right match would be the GTX 660 and NOT the GTX 550 Ti. !!!

But again with an fast processor you could tweak the game to your desire.

The R9 290 [~$250] and R9 290x [~$300] are my bang for the buck GPUs. they meet or exceed the GTX 970 in recent DX12 benchmarks and no 3.5GB + 0.5GB VRAM gerry-rigging.

Way ahead of you!

The vcore and other volts were set to AUTO so the CPU bios adjusted the voltages for me for the "modest" boost".

And once I was done with the adjustments I did an hour of 3dmark tests to check the graphics and ran Calc Prime number tests (to work all the cores to 99%) while ruining Truetemp to watch the temperatures.

I know I could get the overclocking better if I hand tweaked the voltages and pushed it more, but after the frustration of the cooler and wasted time trying to install the part they drew backward in their instructions I was just happy to have my PC working again and running a lot faster than the minimum for Fallout 4.

The one thing that bugs the heck out of me but I will live with it for now is that the cooler fan was TOO BIG for my prepatory case.

So I had to install it externally and it makes my once super cool looking rig now look less than professional.

How do you measure the fan size? I can measure the distance between the holes in the PC case but how will that get me the "fan size"

The new cooler fan was 140 mm and it was just about an inch too big.

Putting it out there, though I'm pretty sure I know the ballpark for my system:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

CPU: Core i5 2500k @3.3GHz (known bottleneck, it's dated)

RAM: 8Gb DDR3

GPU: GTX 980

Hard Drive: 1Tb SSD

This PC is hard-locked to this CPU, I'm still contemplating if it's worth it to change the motherboard and reinstall Windows over it.

Auto settings should be monitored by a program like HWmonitor, because they may be going too high.

For example:

Processor - Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0 GHz
Memory - 16 GB DDR3 1600
Storage - 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM
Graphics - AMD Radeon R9 270 2 GB
- - - - -
I know I clearly hit the minimum build, but I'm worried about my GPU having 2 GBs less than the recommended build preventing me from playing the game on a decent setting.

I've just been informed that my laptop has shipped, and I should be getting it in around 2 days (it's the one in my sig). I know that Fallout 4 will of course run, but does anyone know how close to max I would likely get with an 8GB GTX 980M?

The 270 is a rebrand of the HD 7850, which places it under required. You can OC it to close to 7870 performance. Your CPU beats recommended.

Hellooooooo.... fellow 980m'er!!

We both have a GPU that consistently equals the stock recommended GTX 780. The CPU may cut a bit off the top as it concerns FPS, but I for one and thinking more about ini tweaks and DSR than I'm worrying about game settings.

That is a nice Clevo unit you picked up, desktop i7.

7870 performs way better than 550ti, like more than twice. I hope that Bethesda didn't screw AMD owners when optimizing the game.

what resolution do you plan too run it at Gk? if its 1080p i say max setting for sure 980m does real well on crysis 3 everything but motion blur turned on 50 ish fps which real good for game that runs better on AMD cards. the 8GB ram will not be a factor unless you start doing huge amount of texture replacement mods.

Thanks guys. The full spec for the laptop is as follows:

Model: Schenker XMG U506

  • 15.6" Full-HD 1920x1080 Matte IPS 30-75Hz
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8192MB GDDR5 with G-SYNC
  • Intel Core i7-6700K Quad Core (Skylake) 8MB L3 Cache 4.0-4.2GHz 91 Watt
  • Intel Z170 Chipset (CPU is a desktop model)
  • 4x8192MB SO-DIMM DDR4 RAM 2133MHz HyperX Impact CL13
  • 512GB m.2 SSD Samsung SM951 PCIe x4 1600MB/s read, 1350MB/s write
  • 500GB m.2 SSD Samsung 850 EVO MZ-N5E500B 540MB/s read, 500MB/s write
  • 2x2TB SATA-III 5400U/Min Samsung Spinpoint M9T 230MB/s read, 180MB/s write, Raid-0
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit

The GPU auto-syncs the display between 30 and 75fps, as an alternative to using V-Sync. The OS as well as FO4 will be installed on the SM951, so I'm hoping for absolute minimal load times. Also, I will be playing at native 1080p, and will be aiming for a steady 60fps or higher.

I'd expect a mix of medium and high settings at 1080p.

So my old rig does not even meet min. requirements I am thinking of going with a DIY bundle.
AMD FX- 6300 (6 core, 3.5 GHz)
8 GB Ram
1 TB HDD and 128GB SSD
EVGA GTX 750 Ti
My question is will this be able to run high settings? And just how hard is it to build? I've never tried to do it before.

That is what I thought to.

I might buy a GeForce GTX 970 to get max settings

Sounds awesome! AA is not such a big deal on a 15" laptop screen at 1080p, so it's all good. Thanks for the feedback :goodjob:

I think this may be a better build for High. Needs OS and if you want OS SSD then there's that. But this is a decent ~$600 part list to build off. A 960 can be switch out for a R9 380/280x for about the same price.

Hey there fellow wastelanders, first time posting just to see if you think I'll be ok to run this bad boy of a game. Here are my specs..

Intel i7 930 @ 2.80ghz, 2801 Mhz, 4 cores, 8 logical processors

12 gb ram

windows 7 premium 64 bit

Amd Radeon R9 200 series

Im guessing I'll be able to "run" it but Im thinking of getting a 2nd video card and using crossfire to help it out... I can play most games on max settings but I want to be safe than sorry. Thanks!

What type of RAM do you think you are using with that 4970k?

CPU: i5 4460

RAM: 12GB

GPU: R9 270

Windows 10

Any chances to play it on medium? To be honest, the minimum system requirements are very strange. An HD 7870 should be better than a 550ti.
