- Please try to keep this thread for asking about existing setups. Upgrade questions come in the territory with these kinds of threads, but if i drags and fills up the topic, a stop will be put to it. If you want an in-depth PC build/buy recommendation or laptop recommendation, please use the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538584-the-community-tech-thread-no-151/ instead.

- Do not post here if you are going to brag about where you stand on the GPU list or if you are going to criticize other member's systems. This is not the place to say "I have so and so card and looks like I will totally max this game out hahaha"....or...."ooohhh, my system is so much better than yours!!11!!1!!" Comments like those either clutter up this thread unnecessarily and/or will only get you negative responses. Please keep it to yourself.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report function to report these new threads to the moderators.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

Fallout 4
Desktop Video Card (GPU) List and Performance Level Predictions

(1st Pass, Subject to changes/updates)

Compiled by Tigs ( Tig Ol Bitties)

Notes:

- With the Official Requirements out now, I still somewhat question the min requirements. I am trying to get in touch with devs who can explain to me how this testing was done and the types of settings that were used. May be a lost cause, but worth trying. Quad Core CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 2GB video card is a bit on the heavy side of things to put out as min reqs. As more and more official benchmarks come out, I wouldn't be surprised to see dual-core systems with 4 GB RAM and a 1GB video card like the Radeon 7750 playing this game reasonably for some with settings tuned down. I've honestly never been a fan of how Bethesda do their system requirement specs. Just in the minimum requirements alone, there are large performance gaps with what's listed. A Phenom X4 945 with a GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit of a step down from a i5 2300 and a Radeon 7870 setup. It doesn't make sense for all of them to be under the same category. Alas,I hope this guide will help some determine where their system/hardware stands and I will update this list accordingly when I find more benches on the reality of what people can get away with hardware-wise.

And I find some of Fallout 4's requirements to be suspiciously similar to the Witcher 3's reqs....

- I am borrowing a hierarchy list that was compiled by some fine folks at OCN as I find it to be quite accurate, but did add my own edits in between here and there. Modification Notes are added to the list to predict performance levels of this game and these are very subject to change when real benchmarks come forth. http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html is the list borrowed if you are curious. Large credit given to Anth0789, TheSandman, Astroz, NrGx, and J3r3my who helped create and maintain that list. And a big acknowledgement goes out to a swell member that hasn't been here a while, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=members&module=list, who has provided pretty much the layout for guides like these in the past. If you don't see your card, feel free to ask.

- This list does not include CPU performance. General guideline however, you should be relatively fine to run the game with a chip from one of the following series

- Intel: Core 2 Quad, Core i5 and i7

- AMD: Athlon X3/X4, Phenom X4, AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, and FX

- Anything less than these may suffer/lag. Pentium, Celeron, and Sempron users shouldn't bother playing.

- Still feel the verdict is out whether the game can or cannot run on a dual-core chip. There are several Intel dual-core chips (especially the ones with HyperThreading) that will soundly beat an AMD quad. For example, the Core i3 lineup seems like contenders to be able to run this game. The Witcher 3 claimed to need a quad-core as min too and several with old gen dual-cores were able to run the game (as low as even the ancient AMD X2 3800+). To be determined/confirmed...

Basically just search the card or CPU you have there. If available, The Witcher 3 benchmarks can provide a decent idea of what to expect for the GPU. If not, then the link to your card's description may mention a desktop equivalent that you can cross check back here. The CPU list is a more generalized comparison with benchmark tools to give an idea of each CPUs horsepower. If you cant find what you're looking for, just ask here.

- Intel Integrated Graphic Chipsets are for the most part garbage for gaming. The hardware implementation to handle shaders required for these games are heavily skimped on with older chipsets (predating Intel's HD 3000). These are more meant for business applications and general usage as opposed to gaming. Strong chance you may not be able to run the game. Fallout: FNV and Skyrim allowed some to run the game out of the box, so there might be hope with FO4...but you are better off with something else if possible.

- There are various monitor resolutions out there and the amount of pixels to be rendered does have an effect on performance...the higher the resolution, the more your video card has to work to render all those extra pixels. I can't be bothered to cover settings for each resolution, so I am basing this list on the more common one for gaming these days...1080p (1920x1080). If your resolution is a step lower than this (1680x1050), then your performance will be slightly better than what's indicated in the list. If it's higher, than obviously can be worse....YMMV.

- Lastly, must make mention that Can You Run It websites rarely get PC hardware assessments correct, especially when it comes to the CPU. Their anolysis dont have any understanding of architectural improvements between generations and they merely compare frequency numbers. I wouldnt rely on them or anything similar at all to give a proper assessment.

Without further ado, here is the hierarchy list based on what the reqs are now....

Color Codes:
AMD
Nvidia

Intel

It is a long list, but press ctrl F and a search box should pops up. Simply search the model number of your GPU and click on the 'up/down' or 'find/search' buttons.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past, but they've still got some power in them and with the right tweaks, may be able to enjoy FO4. 512MB VRAM cards here would be a concern however and monitor resolution probably would have to be taken way down.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past. This is the area where upgrading should strongly be considered. Or just get it for the XB1/PS4. Generally weak and lacking in VRAM. Settings would likely be turned way down to barely run. The further down this list section you go, the more you really should reconsider playing this game for the PC.

Have they mentioned how much memory the game can use? Or is it a non issue? I know skyrim had some ugly issues with using more memory. I am wondering if I can actually manage to use my 32 gigs of memory. (Between texture packs and view distance, I can easily see using lot of memory)

Ok I'll pipe in, pretty sure my set up could at least do with a new CPU (which will no doubt also mean a new motherboard), but I am pretty strapped for cash right now so I'm not looking to upgrade it to run at the highest settings :(

Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz

ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D-E (LGA1156)

8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 657MHz

4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (MSI)

2 X 447GB SSD

32GB of RAM isnt going to pose a problem...i dont see the game (or any game today for that matter) could utilize anywhere near that much alone.

You're beating min requirements a bit with that older gen i5 over the phenom 945. Id say its worth trying out before upgrade considerations.

Yeah that was basically my question. Tigs sort of answered the question. But, I don't think many of us are concerned about what they game alone needs. Its with some of the small tweaks that could potentially benefit from that more memory.. (and the question being, can the game actually use that memory? Or will it cap out at some limit and just ctd, like skyrim?)

Like view distance, by that I mean nothing is just popping into view as you approach it, if you adjust it higher, textures are already loaded, enemies and etc are already going about their business before you can see them with vanilla settings. With Fallout 4s reduced load-screens I can see that dramatically increasing memory usage.

All that being said, if your just talking about vanilla game, Tigs is spot on. No way will it need 32 gigs. Its only with lots of texture packs and other tweaks that it might be an issue :-)

@thisislochness

I am more conservativ on this.

We don't know exactly if the rec. req. are for high or ultra. (we assume those specs are enough for 1080p)

Recommended requirements are not always meant to be 1080p and ultra settings.

Example are the witcher 3.

Rec. req. are as follows: i7 3770 / GTX 770 (however those are only for high at 1080p)

for ultra, it goes way up: i7-4790 / GTX 980 (those settings are indeed at 1080p / ultras settings all sliders - 60fps)

---------

So in your case if you archieve ultra settings with that CPU, then most probably the devs rec. req. are way off...

Whatever is correct, the rec. req. seems to be pretty steep. !!!

Yep...

So much for the "If you can run Skyrim, you can run Fallout 4" speculation that was popping up everywhere.

I'm hosed. :cryvaultboy:

And letting min spec speculation and my own enthusiasm run wild I'm now out $59.99. :banghead:

Guess I better find some of my stuff to sell, or take up a life of crime. The movies make bank robbery look easy. To meet those minimums I'll need to buy a whole new system.

Does GoFundMe let you beg for money for a new PC? I'm partially crippled, disabled and have no money to spare. No, really I am.

Yes, I'm joking about robbing a bank. And I'm sure GoFundMe is out.

The rest I'm serious about. Being poor svcks!

Well, at least I finally was able to get Steam to refund me. So I didn't lose any money. And on the bright side, by the time I can afford to get a system to run Fallout 4 it will be a couple of years from now and both the gear and game will be far cheaper. And all the bugs will be worked out and any DLC's released.

Have fun playing people! Some day I'll join you.

Since the recommended is 8GB, I doubt the game would ever use more than +6G. 32GB of memory is WAY overkill for anything short of some 3D modeling or graphics / video rendering workstaiton or a large database server. Frankly, 16GB is overkill for a gaming rig.

All that memory means is you can keep a bunch of other programs open and avoid disk writes to a swap file.

I knew my pc wouldn't run it at min specs so I grabbed an xbox. I'll wait and see how mods for consoles work before I really decide if upgrading the PC is worth it. That's the only thing I care about is getting decent mods

I have faith in my 4G DDR2 1066 overclocked ram, quadcore 2.83 Ghz, 1G 460 GTX Geforce graphic card, because it's all overclocked and it ran Dragon age 3 ! Close everything, even that windows anti virus!

I'm not aware of any game that has ever been released which can fully utilize that much RAM.

Some recent games call for 16GB RAM in the recommended specs, but don't seem to benefit from having more than 16GB:

http://gamegpu.ru/images/remote/http--www.gamegpu.ru-images-stories-Test_GPU-Action-Dying_Light-test-dl__ram2.jpg used at most around 8GB and http://gamegpu.ru/images/remote/http--www.gamegpu.ru-images-stories-Test_GPU-Action-STAR_WARS_Battlefront_Beta-test-starwarsbattlefront_ram2.jpg used only 6GB.

At first I thought I'd be hoping for all high settings because I get about 45 fps in the most demanding places in Skyrim. Then I remembered I have a ton of high resolution texture mods and ENB running. My rig should slay this game, I hope. At least until some nice graphics mods come out at which point I can either up to whatever is next for GPUs, or snag a 970 cheap and SLI.

Didn't get any opinions in the last thread so thought I'd post again.

I am guessing I'll be able to play on low settings. The CPU is above the min but the GPU is below the min:

I5 2430M 2.4 ghz w turbo boost up to 3.0 ghz

Radeon HD 6650 2 GB

8 gb ram

What do you think?

Low settings, maybe medium

It be lowest of low if it does run. CPU is actually below min...it's a dual-core chip (4 threads). Still to be determined how it would perform.

Id think medium, perhaps some high.

Your GPU is fine (especially if you have one of those gaming 4GB editions)

Your CPU is at the minimum+ region.

If you find a compromise between resolution and detail level, you will be fine.

----------

As the game uses the creation engine. anyway...

...i post something straight from Nvidias commumity tech forums. (it may be useful to others as well)

TechSpot has thoroughly anolyzed GPU and CPU performance in Skyrim across a plethora of configurations. The results are interesting to say the least.

Nvidia's hardware is performing better overall on the GPU front, but it's the CPU scaling that's most interesting.

While Skyrim is definitely demanding on the latest GPU's, it's CPU bound at this point. It seems even the fastest CPU's cannot feed the GPU fast enough in this game.

Therefore, you're going to want a max CPU OC to squeeze the most performance out of your GPU in Skyrim.

For example, TechSpot tested the game on an i7 2600K at 2Ghz and 4Ghz. They netted 44 fps at 2Ghz, but nearly doubled their performance to 81 fps when they OC'ed to 4Ghz.

So, I went on Ebay and got some great deals to upgrade my machine. I went this route to save money since if I were to upgrade I'd go all the way to the 1151 mobo and that would necessitate new ram as well as a new proc. I don't have the money for that so I went with bargain hunting instead in order to keep my DDR3.

CPU: i7-3770K @ 3.5GHz (but will OC to 4.0GHz)

VID: EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked 4GB VRAM

MEM: 16GB DDR3 1600

SSD game drive

ample PSU

  • The CPU should be pretty solid and there should be no obstacle to maintaining a stable 4.0Ghz. While it's still in-between minimum and recommended, I figure this will put me closer to the recommended side.
  • GTX 770 Superclocked actually compares favarably to the GTX 780 giving up only about 5 frames on average on Ultra settings at 2K resolution across the seven or so games I could find benchmarks on. I play at 1080p so they could be even closer in performance than that.
  • My ram is ample.

So what do you think? I'm fairly sure I'll be able to play on 'high' but any chance I could touch 'Ultra' on certain sliders? I know some graphic bells and whistles are more intensive than others. For instance I'm not someone who cares to play with advanced AA settings.

Can anyone tell me if I at least meet the minimum specs? Only thing I'm unsure of is processor/:

Windows 10 64 bit
Intel® Celeron® CPU N2480 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Page File: 2033MB available
Graphics Card: Intel® HD Graphics Driver Version 10.18.10.4276

I honestly wouldnt bother getting the game with that. Both CPU and GPU are way under.

I would suggest to those whose rigs are far below the minimum to consider getting an Xbox. It will be very difficult to get a mobo, ram, 'okay' cpu and 'okay' video card for under $400. CPU's are funny animals because they never really go down in price as you think they would with age. I still had to pay $200 for my 3770K and that's a really good deal! If you go new then you're usually paying $250+. Used video cards can be had for under $200, but if you go too cheap it will end up being no better than the minimum spec anyway.
