- Please try to keep this thread for asking about existing setups. Upgrade questions come in the territory with these kinds of threads, but if i drags and fills up the topic, a stop will be put to it. If you want an in-depth PC build/buy recommendation or laptop recommendation, please use the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538584-the-community-tech-thread-no-151/ instead.

- Do not post here if you are going to brag about where you stand on the GPU list or if you are going to criticize other member's systems. This is not the place to say "I have so and so card and looks like I will totally max this game out hahaha"....or...."ooohhh, my system is so much better than yours!!11!!1!!" Comments like those either clutter up this thread unnecessarily and/or will only get you negative responses. Please keep it to yourself.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report function to report these new threads to the moderators.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

Fallout 4
Desktop Video Card (GPU) List and Performance Level Predictions

(1st Pass, Subject to changes/updates)

Compiled by Tigs ( Tig Ol Bitties)

Notes:

- With the Official Requirements out now, I still somewhat question the min requirements. I am trying to get in touch with devs who can explain to me how this testing was done and the types of settings that were used. May be a lost cause, but worth trying. Quad Core CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 2GB video card is a bit on the heavy side of things to put out as min reqs. As more and more official benchmarks come out, I wouldn't be surprised to see dual-core systems with 4 GB RAM and a 1GB video card like the Radeon 7750 playing this game reasonably for some with settings tuned down. I've honestly never been a fan of how Bethesda do their system requirement specs. Just in the minimum requirements alone, there are large performance gaps with what's listed. A Phenom X4 945 with a GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit of a step down from a i5 2300 and a Radeon 7870 setup. It doesn't make sense for all of them to be under the same category. Alas,I hope this guide will help some determine where their system/hardware stands and I will update this list accordingly when I find more benches on the reality of what people can get away with hardware-wise.

And I find some of Fallout 4's requirements to be suspiciously similar to the Witcher 3's reqs....

- I am borrowing a hierarchy list that was compiled by some fine folks at OCN as I find it to be quite accurate, but did add my own edits in between here and there. Modification Notes are added to the list to predict performance levels of this game and these are very subject to change when real benchmarks come forth. http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html is the list borrowed if you are curious. Large credit given to Anth0789, TheSandman, Astroz, NrGx, and J3r3my who helped create and maintain that list. And a big acknowledgement goes out to a swell member that hasn't been here a while, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=members&module=list, who has provided pretty much the layout for guides like these in the past. If you don't see your card, feel free to ask.

- This list does not include CPU performance. General guideline however, you should be relatively fine to run the game with a chip from one of the following series

- Intel: Core 2 Quad, Core i5 and i7

- AMD: Athlon X3/X4, Phenom X4, AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, and FX

- Anything less than these may suffer/lag. Pentium, Celeron, and Sempron users shouldn't bother playing.

- Still feel the verdict is out whether the game can or cannot run on a dual-core chip. There are several Intel dual-core chips (especially the ones with HyperThreading) that will soundly beat an AMD quad. For example, the Core i3 lineup seems like contenders to be able to run this game. The Witcher 3 claimed to need a quad-core as min too and several with old gen dual-cores were able to run the game (as low as even the ancient AMD X2 3800+). To be determined/confirmed...

Basically just search the card or CPU you have there. If available, The Witcher 3 benchmarks can provide a decent idea of what to expect for the GPU. If not, then the link to your card's description may mention a desktop equivalent that you can cross check back here. The CPU list is a more generalized comparison with benchmark tools to give an idea of each CPUs horsepower. If you cant find what you're looking for, just ask here.

- Intel Integrated Graphic Chipsets are for the most part garbage for gaming. The hardware implementation to handle shaders required for these games are heavily skimped on with older chipsets (predating Intel's HD 3000). These are more meant for business applications and general usage as opposed to gaming. Strong chance you may not be able to run the game. Fallout: FNV and Skyrim allowed some to run the game out of the box, so there might be hope with FO4...but you are better off with something else if possible.

- There are various monitor resolutions out there and the amount of pixels to be rendered does have an effect on performance...the higher the resolution, the more your video card has to work to render all those extra pixels. I can't be bothered to cover settings for each resolution, so I am basing this list on the more common one for gaming these days...1080p (1920x1080). If your resolution is a step lower than this (1680x1050), then your performance will be slightly better than what's indicated in the list. If it's higher, than obviously can be worse....YMMV.

- Lastly, must make mention that Can You Run It websites rarely get PC hardware assessments correct, especially when it comes to the CPU. Their anolysis dont have any understanding of architectural improvements between generations and they merely compare frequency numbers. I wouldnt rely on them or anything similar at all to give a proper assessment.

Without further ado, here is the hierarchy list based on what the reqs are now....

Color Codes:
AMD
Nvidia

Intel

It is a long list, but press ctrl F and a search box should pops up. Simply search the model number of your GPU and click on the 'up/down' or 'find/search' buttons.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Egad!!: I'm fairly certain these will give you at least Ultra Settings. Gets more to the max levels if more near the top of the list.

Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past, but they've still got some power in them and with the right tweaks, may be able to enjoy FO4. 512MB VRAM cards here would be a concern however and monitor resolution probably would have to be taken way down.

Below Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past. This is the area where upgrading should strongly be considered. Or just get it for the XB1/PS4. Generally weak and lacking in VRAM. Settings would likely be turned way down to barely run. The further down this list section you go, the more you really should reconsider playing this game for the PC.

Figured I would post this here too.
NVidia is giving a way a custom Fallout PC, with Pip-Boy edition.
Just gotta take a FO themed thumbs up pic.

Having a hard time comparing my system to the min and recommended specs. Anyone know where I sit between just enough and at least enough to run more than bare-bones settings?

AMD FX 6300 six core, 3.5Ghz CPU

8 Gig Ram

GeForce GTX 750 TI w/ 2GB GDDR5 memory

Many thanks to anyone with a clue who responds.

CPU is 20% above minimum and the GPU even 45%.

That means resolutions greater than 720p and decent settings.

Radeon R9 380. Not quite ULTRA, but at 2560x1440 resolution, I don't think any sort of anti-aliasing or high amount of Anisotropic filtering will be necessary.

It'll play. Guessing medium settings. If you want better, spring for a new GPU and do high or even more.

Hi, thanks for that, I appriciate the reply.

However I just checked my CPU and it's ~3.6GHz not 3.9GHz.

Still think that is okay?

Should be ok. I'm assuming it's not a k version since you didn't note that, so not overclockable. Still should be looking good.

Upgrades are almost doen (CPU and ram)

PSU: OCZ 700W

CPU: AMD X6 1055T

RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3 @1600mhz

Videocard is MSI R6950 2GB-DDR5 Twin Frozer III OC Poweredition , still at stock speed, but time to OC it to GPU 1200mhz / DDR 1550mhz ... hopefully I can play in in 1080P at medium that way :)

Hi

Thanks Tigs for your guide!

My specs are:

Intel i5 4460 3.2GHz

16GB RAM

GTX 970 4GB

According to your graph, I should be good for ultra?
For what it's worth, I only play in 1280x1024 as my monitor cannot handle more.

Edit--

Also what is meant when you say you can run it? At 30FPS? 60+?

You should be aware, that's kind of old hardware you have there...

Judge for yourself:

@BynnyCat

Your GPU could handle the game at ultra. (hope so anyway)

Your processor is a bit lower that the processor stated on the rec. req.

My opinion you should be able to play at 1080p (high settings)

Of cours as your native mionitor resolution is only 1280x1024, you should be able to play it maxed out on those settings.

*** Also to mention it seems Fallout 4 will suppot Gameworks for Nvidia ***

Even if it's a natine Nvidia feature and optimised mostly for Nvidia GPUs, it's very hardware demanding, and you should consider a 25% * performance penalty even on a Nvidia GPU.

*According the measurements from CDPR, at least on The Witcher 3

So my old laptop with Intel HD 3000 could run skyrim on low with 30 fps and i had plenty of mods then too. My new laptop has The same specs but a new graphics card, AMD radeon HD 7400m with 1024 mb vram. My cpu is still 2.7ghz and The minimum is 2.8 ghz. Will i be able to run fallout 4 on The lowest settings?Edit: oh and i have 8 ram

What is your cpu model? Ghz alone dont tell me much. That 7400m gpu is a definite no, alot worse than the minimum spec card

Dont get me wrong it will most likely boot the game, but some serious stutter and low frames at the lowest preset and resolutions.

Edit: did some googling apperently newest driver versions are not supported on this, might cause some serious issues, maybe someone else can verify this as i personally have very little experience with notebook amd gpus

I know ;) but I didn't want to rebuild my PC with a new mainboard and I have a tight budget at the moment. So the 1055T was the fastets option I could get voor AM3 socket (I couldn't find a 1090t) which is close to a FX 6300 in perfomance way.

For the graphics card: With an OC it gives me a bit more performance , could be enough. If not, I could alway buy another one. If it is enough, the new Graphics card can wait until TES-VI comes out! ;)

Specs:

Phenom II X4 955 3.2 GHz

Sapphire Radeon 6850 1GB

6 GB DDRII RAM

My, probably flawed logic, is that if I can run Skyrim on ultra, I should be able to run Fallout 4 on at least medium considering it's "just" a modded Creation engine.

Just because your resolution is low, doesn't mean that you can't run a higher resolution for a better visual experience.

Right i think so too, The graphics hasnt changed drasticlly since skyrim. Plus The minimum requierments are set High so bethesda cant be sued IF someone buys The game and cant play it cuz of their computer
