Just to double check with people who know what they are talking about.

I have a Laptop with the following specs:

CPU: Intel i7-4700MQ @ 2.4GHz (although it does have a turbo boost to 3.2GHz across all of the cores)

GPU: GForce GTX 770M with 3.00GB RAM

Total Memory: 16GB

Windows 10 - 64bit

Probably not enough to play Witcher 3 (haven't tried), but I think I will be able to thoroughly enjoy Fallout 4

Top end of medium settings, perhaps even some high.

Not bad. The GTX 770m is like an slightly underclocked gtx 660 desktop card. Probably medium settings at 1080p...if resolution is lower, then your settings will be better. Your laptop can play the witcher 3 probably at the same settings btw.

Thanks for the quick reply Tigs! To be honest my system surprises me. I managed to handle the Witcher 3 very well at High (at 30 fps) so I'm glad to see that I can possibly do the same with this awesome game.

Thanks Tigs, that is what I thought.

So I might be able to play Witcher 3, hummmmm -- but I won't even think about that until I am done with Fallout, and by then, I might even be able to pick it up on the cheap.

I'd like to keep expenses down so I'd aim for around $800 but I can go up to $1200. Just have to put off replacing the dishwasher but, hey! Fallout 4 trumps clean dishes!

The machine I currently have is almost 5 years old.

Tough to answer for sure, but should get high at least. Thing is we dont know how well the game scales with SLI.

Healthy budget, but dont think you even need that much. While 5 yrs old, the i7 2600s cpu you have is still decent. It has a base clock of 2.8Ghz, but can turboboost up to 3.8Ghz. You just need a better gpu and psu. To be conservative:

PSUs:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438054&cm_re=evga_g2_650w-_-17-438-054-_-Product ...if it goes back on sale. Was $60 after rebate just a day ago.

GPU: https://jet.com/product/ZOTAC-GeForce-GTX-970-ZT-90101-10P-4GB-256-Bit-GDDR5-PCI-Express-30-x16-HDCP-Rea/e7f49c84a9a34b4f87f40cfe506e5491

Use Code 20NOW to bring down to about $240. Can be less depending on ship and payment methods I believe. This particular GTX 970 is a very short card at 8 inches I believe. You obviously have enough cash for a better card if that's what you want, but we still need to know what PC model your system is to see what can fit length wise

Top end of medium settings, perhaps even some high.

Either of the psus i suggested would be fine, but now im glad i asked you about your pc model. See here:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-Pavilion-HPE-h8-1020-Issues-replacing-old-with-new/td-p/4768799

Basically, your motherboard has a BIOS limitation that doesnt support a lot of todays cards...lack of modern UEFI support. So the gtx 970 is a no go. In the thread i linked, someone mentions about two MSI 750 Ti cards that has a legacy BIOS switch that would allow them to work with your pc. Thats the best card you can do unfortunately unless you upgrade the motherboard as well.

At this point, any further questions you have i would like you to take to PMs with me or using the Community Tech Topic instead of filling this topic any further. There are a few options available to you since you have a nice budget.

Not sure how well the game plays with dual core cpus, but yours has 4 threads making it a quadcore pretender. Pending results, but i think youd still get high settings.

Okay, thanks for the help on my question about my laptop! Now, my desktop:

Windows 8.1

Processor: Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.40 GHz 3.80 GHz

RAM: 8 GB

System: 64 bit, x64

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670

Thanks for the feedback, and what would be the priority as far as potential upgrades: newer GPU, or more RAM? Thanks again!

Should be fine for high at 1080p. If any upgrades, perhaps a new video card if you want better than high.

Hey, Tigs, given that they kinda proved that 8GB is still more than enough for gaming (generally), why do we see 16GB so much?

(I could go find the article, but I'm lazy. )

Rather off topic general question, but people do use their systems for more than gaming. For the most part 8 GB is plenty for games. See little benefit going higher unless youre doing grahpical editing/work, video editing/rendering, running multiple resource hogging applications at the same time, photo editing/rendering, etc etc etc.

Basically, people have many uses for a PC aside from gaming

Alright so I know I'm somewhere above the minimum specs, but not too sure about what kind of performance I'll be seeing

FX 6300 @ 4.2 GHz

EVGA GTX 970

16GB DDR3 Patriot Viper Ram

Windows 10 64x

What kind of performance do we think I'll be seeing at 1080p resolution? I know it'll be a guess but it's better than nothing.

Cheers!

Don't know much about AMD CPUs but I'd say high/ultra with the 970.

Thanks! Yeah, I know the FX 6300 is an entry level gaming processor, just not able to just to Intel yet.

Just looked up that CPU. I'd be interested to see what the performance difference is with that vs my i5 3570k at 4.2 with us both having 970s.

Little bit behind? I'd still be willing to bet ultra or otherwise pretty damn high for the both of you.

I'm not saying he's behind. Just that I'm interested in if there is any difference. Games tend to be a crap shoot. Metro games bring my system to its knees with all the filtering maxed. Same with Tomb Raider.

That said I expect anyone with a 970 and a half decent CPU to be able to max FO4 with a few things dropped down at worst.
