- Please try to keep this thread for asking about existing setups. Upgrade questions come in the territory with these kinds of threads, but if i drags and fills up the topic, a stop will be put to it. If you want an in-depth PC build/buy recommendation or laptop recommendation, please use the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1541774-the-community-tech-thread-no-152/ instead.

- Do not post here if you are going to brag about where you stand on the GPU list or if you are going to criticize other member's systems. This is not the place to say "I have so and so card and looks like I will totally max this game out hahaha"....or...."ooohhh, my system is so much better than yours!!11!!1!!" Comments like those either clutter up this thread unnecessarily and/or will only get you negative responses. Please keep it to yourself.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

Fallout 4
Desktop Video Card (GPU) List and Performance Level Predictions

(1st Pass, Subject to changes/updates)

Compiled by Tigs ( Tig Ol Bitties)

Notes:

- With the Official Requirements out now, I still somewhat question the min requirements. I am trying to get in touch with devs who can explain to me how this testing was done and the types of settings that were used. May be a lost cause, but worth trying. Quad Core CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 2GB video card is a bit on the heavy side of things to put out as min reqs. As more and more official benchmarks come out, I wouldn't be surprised to see dual-core systems with 4 GB RAM and a 1GB video card like the Radeon 7750 playing this game reasonably for some with settings tuned down. I've honestly never been a fan of how Bethesda do their system requirement specs. Just in the minimum requirements alone, there are large performance gaps with what's listed. A Phenom X4 945 with a GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit of a step down from a i5 2300 and a Radeon 7870 setup. It doesn't make sense for all of them to be under the same category. Alas,I hope this guide will help some determine where their system/hardware stands and I will update this list accordingly when I find more benches on the reality of what people can get away with hardware-wise.

And I find some of Fallout 4's requirements to be suspiciously similar to the Witcher 3's reqs....

- I am borrowing a hierarchy list that was compiled by some fine folks at OCN as I find it to be quite accurate, but did add my own edits in between here and there. Modification Notes are added to the list to predict performance levels of this game and these are very subject to change when real benchmarks come forth. http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html is the list borrowed if you are curious. Large credit given to Anth0789, TheSandman, Astroz, NrGx, and J3r3my who helped create and maintain that list. And a big acknowledgement goes out to a swell member that hasn't been here a while, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=members&module=list, who has provided pretty much the layout for guides like these in the past. If you don't see your card, feel free to ask.

- This list does not include CPU performance. General guideline however, you should be relatively fine to run the game with a chip from one of the following series

- Intel: Core 2 Quad, Core i5 and i7

- AMD: Athlon X3/X4, Phenom X4, AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, and FX

- Anything less than these may suffer/lag. Pentium, Celeron, and Sempron users shouldn't bother playing.

- Still feel the verdict is out whether the game can or cannot run on a dual-core chip. There are several Intel dual-core chips (especially the ones with HyperThreading) that will soundly beat an AMD quad. For example, the Core i3 lineup seems like contenders to be able to run this game. The Witcher 3 claimed to need a quad-core as min too and several with old gen dual-cores were able to run the game (as low as even the ancient AMD X2 3800+). To be determined/confirmed...

- If you are using a laptop, you can check your GPU and CPU on the following lists to compare with the requirements:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&professional=0&archive=0&dx=0&multiplegpus=0&showClassDescription=1&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&gameselect%5B%5D=336&gameselect%5B%5D=332&gameselect%5B%5D=329&gameselect%5B%5D=316&gameselect%5B%5D=314&gameselect%5B%5D=112&gpu_fullname=1&codename=1&architecture=1&pixelshaders=1&vertexshaders=1&corespeed=1&shaderspeed=1&boostspeed=1&memoryspeed=1&memorybus=1&memorytype=1&directx=1&opengl=1&technology=1&daysold=0
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&restrict_architecture=&maxTDP=&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&archive=0&dx=&condensed=0&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&3dmark06cpu=1&cinebench10_s=1&cinebench10_m=1&cb11_single=1&cb11=1&cinebench_r15_single=1&cinebench_r15_multi=1&superpi1m=1&superpi2m=1&superpi32m=1&wprime_32=1&wprime_1024=1&dhrystone=1&whetstone=1&winrar=1&x264_pass1=1&x264_pass2=1&truecrypt_aes=1&truecrypt_twofish=1&truecrypt_serpent=1&geekbench2=1&geekbench3_single=1&geekbench3_multi=1&passmark_cpu=1&sunspider=1&cpu_fullname=1&codename=1&series=1&l2cache=1&l3cache=1&fsb=1&tdp=1&mhz=1&turbo_mhz=1&cores=1&threads=1&technology=1&architecture=1&64bit=1&daysold=1

Basically just search the card or CPU you have there. If available, The Witcher 3 benchmarks can provide a decent idea of what to expect for the GPU. If not, then the link to your card's description may mention a desktop equivalent that you can cross check back here. The CPU list is a more generalized comparison with benchmark tools to give an idea of each CPUs horsepower. If you cant find what you're looking for, just ask here.

- Intel Integrated Graphic Chipsets are for the most part garbage for gaming. The hardware implementation to handle shaders required for these games are heavily skimped on with older chipsets (predating Intel's HD 3000). These are more meant for business applications and general usage as opposed to gaming. Strong chance you may not be able to run the game. Fallout: FNV and Skyrim allowed some to run the game out of the box, so there might be hope with FO4...but you are better off with something else if possible.

- There are various monitor resolutions out there and the amount of pixels to be rendered does have an effect on performance...the higher the resolution, the more your video card has to work to render all those extra pixels. I can't be bothered to cover settings for each resolution, so I am basing this list on the more common one for gaming these days...1080p (1920x1080). If your resolution is a step lower than this (1680x1050), then your performance will be slightly better than what's indicated in the list. If it's higher, than obviously can be worse....YMMV.

- Lastly, must make mention that Can You Run It websites rarely get PC hardware assessments correct, especially when it comes to the CPU. Their anolysis dont have any understanding of architectural improvements between generations and they merely compare frequency numbers. I wouldnt rely on them or anything similar at all to give a proper assessment.

Without further ado, here is the hierarchy list based on what the reqs are now....

Color Codes:
AMD
Nvidia

Intel

It is a long list, but press ctrl F and a search box should pops up. Simply search the model number of your GPU and click on the 'up/down' or 'find/search' buttons.

Egad!!: I'm fairly certain these will give you at least Ultra Settings. Gets more to the max levels if more near the top of the list.

Below Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past. This is the area where upgrading should strongly be considered. Or just get it for the XB1/PS4. Generally weak and lacking in VRAM. Settings would likely be turned way down to barely run. The further down this list section you go, the more you really should reconsider playing this game for the PC.

I have an I5 650 3.20MHz (hyper threading) processor

8 gigs of ram

GTX 460 1gig

I run games on a resolution of 1680x1050

I have been able to run games like Far Cry 4 (which is one of the most demanding games) on medium settings and games like Metal Gear 5 on the highest settings with this set up and was wanting to know if it would be any different in terms of the game being demanding ( as in not being well optimized)?

Because of resolution, you may be able to get medium settings. How demanding and how well optimized is anyone's guess at this point.

@Mark1 asked me( previous post now locked by moderators) what card I am willing to get if I changed my mind from the R7870 2gb. I was looking at the second catagory of video cards that will do the job better than the third which are the minimum. Most of the cards on the list is on Amazon as used and have been priced from $144 to $200. Some are on Newegg and are at full price of $164 to near $300 brand new and in stock. The SAPPHIRE DUAL-X Radeon R9 280 looks promising at 3gb, but it is at my local shop for $20.00 bucks cheaper than Neweggs asking price of 189.99.

But it is an idea.

Oh good. Seems I'm in for the maximum.

i7 -4790 @8x3.6 Ghz

Nvidia 980 GTX 4 GB RAM

256 SSL Hard Drive

16 GB DDR3 RAM @800 Mhz <-- this could be a bottleneck?

Windows 8.1

Resolution 1920x1080

Can anyone confirm ultra settings?

Your idea is not bad. The R9 280 will get you easily to the 900p resolution.

On the other hand your processor is weak, in comparison with the R9 280. (a lot i would say)

I do not know how much more you will gain on such an upgrade.

-------

More resonable would be to upgrade your CPU and leave your existing GPU, and in the feature you should make an GPU upgrade as well.

I was thinging about the FX-8320 CPU btw.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113285&cm_re=FX-8300-_-19-113-285-_-Product%C2%A0

I would start off trying high settings + FXAA @ 1080p.

Well you're the first person on this forum (at least) that came forward to say that they can play witcher 3 with the Radeon 6850. Gives me a good feeling you'll probably get similar settings for FO4.

Initially the game was unplayable. But some ini tweaks really helped my frame rate.

I discovered that Witcher 3 had like a 10x tesselation on water reading the config file, even at low settting. I dropped that down to 4x and with not a noticeable difference in how water looks, my frame rate jumped up a bit.

I also reduced stuff like the number of decals from a stupid number it was like 200 if I remember correct to something like 40, and still, no visible difference, but frame rate jumped a bit more.

The only thing that I changed in the ini that did had an impact on visual quality was the max texture resolution that I dropped from 4096 to 1024.

So pretty much my Witcher 3 looks somewhat like Skyrim on Very High with its official HD texture pack, which is fine, and I have a playable frame rate with that image quality.

I hope I'll get about a similar experience from Fallout 4 too. :)

Got my PC upgraded. Basically went from a i7-3.4 to 4th gen i7-4.7 and GeForce 660 1MB to a GeForce 960 2MB. Still 16MB RAM and stuff. Windows 10.

First thing I did was install Skyrim and have been playing it on Ultra settings even after added several texture mods. So sweet. So ready for FO4.

Umm a better or worse power supply will in no way affect your gaming. If its enough to power your rig, then you're good. If its a little short you can have crashes on startup even lol.

800W is 800W. Any branding is just going to affect the life of your powersupply. Or if you go modular (expensive) you wont have wires youre not using dangling around to ziptie and hide.

The PSU is the most important PC component in the case, it's the one part you don't want to cheap out on and it is the first thing places like Ibuypower/Cyberpower/ABS cheaps out on because customers are unfamiliar with it ...if it is even listed. Apevia, Raidmax, Lepa, High Power and such are brands to avoid like the plague.

Some power supplies are cheaply made, some just flat out lie about their wattage and some don't have proper voltage regulation or overcurrent/undercurrent protection and if they go they take other PC components with it ...and I can guarantee you that ruining your GPU will affect your gaming.

This might not be a "can I run it" question, but it's at least tangent.

I have a i7 4790k @ 4.4Ghz, 16GB ram, 780ti 3GB. I was very happy with the 780ti for Far Cry 4, but not so much for Dragon Age Inquisition. I'm playing on 1440p, which adds quite a bit to the requirements, but fortunately it's a GSYNC monitor.

Question is: How much would it benefit me to get a 980 ti or Titan X? Ideally I'd want to hold out until NVIDIA releases their Pascal line next year, but I'd really love to play Fallout 4 at the (close to) highest settings to get the very best experience.

I'd put up with whatever level of really good settings you can manage until Pascal.

The 970 is for the most part a sidegrade and the Titan is just too much money. The 980Ti is a brute, but Pascal should have improved hardware support to DX12 features.

I don't think BGS changed the game engine so much that its basic traits are going to be very different. The game is going to love the high CPU speed and it's going to favor Nvidia GPUs just like the req/rec specs indicate.

In short, FO4 is more likely to be going in your "very happy with" column next to FC4.

Hi guys! I see the system requirements, but i still have some doubts about if i can run it. Here my specs:

- intel core i5 3230M 2.6GHz with turbo boost up to 3.2
- Nvidia GeForce 710M 1gb vram
- 6 GB DDR3 RAM

All low, 1366x768, 30 fps ??

There is some other gaming perfomance:

- GTA V - 30/40 fps

- MGS V - 30/40 fps (on medium)

- Mad Max - 30/40 fps (some drops to 25 sometimes) (with shadows off)

You think i can run Fallout 4 ?? Tell me your opinions, because i really need want to know if i can, to buy the game
Best regards, Natsu

All low @ 30 fps? yeah, i'd say so. should be ok for a med/low mix of settings, actually.

At 1366 you should be just fine for medium/low mix.

I'm back again...

is it worth upgrading my MSI R6950 2gb OC Power Edition to a EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB?

I think it does...:

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=5013&compareGPU=Fallout%204. my 6950 is compareable with a 7790

cost around EUR 110 for a used one

Without 8 GB of ram, I think you will get bad performance in crowded areas. You will probably be okay wandering around the wasteland, but your computer will chug if you go into an urban area.

Merged your thread into this one as it belongs here. That 710m is not doing you any favors and youd probably be lowest of lows in this game if it evens runs. The 710m is not much better than Intels HD 4000.

Edit: After seeing videos of your setup running Witcher 3, which this games reqs are comparable to, you may have a slight chance. Still low low setting and lots of tweaks involved...plus witcher 3 may be optimized better.

Yes it would be better. Its like going from low to a little better than medium settings.

LOL, will my trusty GTX 650 TI 2GB be able to run this? I can handle Ultra Skyrim 1080p ith over a hundred mods installed for 40-60 FPS;

Seems like a bit of an exaggeration to me as my 660 TI struggled with the high texture pack and a some HD mods to even hit 20ish in some areas. Even my 970 dips down into the 40s at some places.

That said, probably low with a few things on meduim. Depending on your CPU of course.

I have intel Hd Graphics 4000 too (its a laptop, have the Nvidia 710M and the intel hd 4k), and believe me, its more weak than you think :D
Well, lets wait and see how optimizable is the game...

Anyway, thanks to all :)

First time posting on the forums, so Hello everyone! I, like many of you am very stoked for Fallout 4 but I'm really wanting to know if my PC would be able to at least run the game in a way that is bearable enough to play. I am not one who is knowledgeable when it comes to computers and the specs so I'm hoping the community here can give me some help and possibly, some hope.

My PC is 5 years old. I have the 64bit of Windows 7 (well now 10), the space to install the game, and the proper processor (according to the minimum specs). My 2 concerns are the Memory and the Graphics card. I only have 4GB of memory. It is 1600ghz and it is DDR3. My video card is an XFX Radeon 5870. I don't have an idea as to what the storage is on the video card.

I know I can reference the recommended specs to see where I fall short. I know I do. I'm posting and asking for some insight because I am not all that computer literate and my PC has been able to run many other games at max with no stutters or such. I know Fallout 3 / New Vegas and Skyrim are a bit older than Fallout 4 but I can handle those game handsomely and maxed. Fallout 4 is new but it doesn't appear to be as "souped" up and demanding as other games can be.

Upgrading my PC really isn't an option. I work full time and go to school. Gaming has taken a backseat somewhat and I can't see myself throwing money into a new rig. I could (eventually) get more memory. I do have a PS4 and if push comes to shove I can settle for the game on the console and probably retire my days of gaming on the PC.

Again I know I cannot run the game maxed out or balls to the wall. As long as it is playable and frustration free, I'll be happy.

Thank you guys.

-Rob
