...technically it'll have DX11 support, but Todd stated Skyrim won't use any DX11 features (Tessellation, etc) in the game except from some optimizations. Whatever we users can add DX11 content (DX11 shaders, tessellation-enabled models, etc) via mods or not is still unknown.

Okay so this is actually more a question for my brother about his computer since I don't want him to hog mine.

His specs:

- Dell Inc microprocessor motherboard
-Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86 ghz
-GeForce 9600 512 mb
-DDR-2 4 Gb RAM (in total. he has two blocks of 2 Gb each)

Will I have to get a lock on my door to prevent him access to my own computer which I already know will run it or am I and my computer safe 11.11.11?

If your brother isn't happy with running it at low settings (and that being generous) at a fairly low resolution, lock the door :)

Okay.....seeing as how I'll be able to run it just fine on medium, not to mention with a 21 inch screen versus his 18 inch (I think, it's a lot smaller at least than mine) I think I better get some more locks just to be safe.
He'll rant and rave if he has to do something in low settings.......hmm, maybe get some earplugs too. Thanks for the reply.

It's odd, as my two latest motherboards had Realtek audio and I never noticed audio stutter...have you updated your sound drivers from Realtek' site? (latest version is 2.64, avaliable from http://218.210.127.131/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false).

Yeah this seemed to fix it. No more spells that sound very deep and sometimes very high.
Thanx for the link.

Sorry. Just cannot agree. The 360 has the equivalent of a Radeon X1950 Pro, and the HD 3100 chipset chip is barely in the same class as an HD 2400. Everything would have to be low and that includes the screen resolution.

Wrong. The 3100 has more then enough memory dedicated to allow for high texture res to be used.. it wont handle high screen res but any computer using it likely only has around 1366/768 anyway so that doesnt matter.

I would suggest NOT enabling bloom or hdr or aa on such a gpu but otherwise it will run skyrim just fine with medium and even some high settings.

Will it run it at 40 fps.. no but anyone with such a gpu doesnt give a rats [censored] anyway.

I have a question. I want to buy a completely new pc and thinking about waiting for amd bulldozer or intel ivy bridge as well as nvidia kepler (gtx 6xx series)
is it worth to wait or do you think the current cpus/gpus are powerful enough to run skyrim at 1920x1080 (i am planning to play bf3/crysis, etc and upcoming games on max as well)

Well...it can http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_9K8-3IDIs&hd=1 somehow...so it'll probably run Skyrim.

Although ATI did begin to enable users of its chipsets to include provisions for entirely separate VRAM to allow the graphics chip to avoid having to borrow main system memory (which is slow in graphics terms) beginning with the Xpress 2200, I believe, the actual result, to my knowledge, was no takers among major producers. Based on the very narrow memory system afforded by their chipset video chips, and the very slow main system memory they have to share, the first integrated graphics that will play games such as Fallout 3, FO-NV, and Skyrim in anything similar to the way that the games are designed is AMD's "Llano" APU with its included HD 6520, not the HD 3n00 / 4n00 chipset.

Now, if we choose to split hairs, and try to define the idea of what the word "run" means to include any sort of of stumbling, stuttering, herky-jerky blurriness as something other than objectionable, that's not real PC gaming, IMO, and there appears to be quite a bit of anecdotal evidence accumulating to indicate that systems relying on chipset video (admittedly, mostly among laptop users) are failing at a higher than normal rate when subjected regularly to the rigors of high intensity 3D game playing.

I have a relatively old computer (2 years), and am upgrading the machine specifically so that I will be able to play Skyrim (been waiting for this moment for years!). Medium graphics is a must, but high would be preferable. Do you guys think I could swing that without buying a graphics card more than $160 ish?

8 GB DDR3 Memory
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 running at 2.66 GHz
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=41125&CatId=3585 - this is the video card I am considering getting for Skyrim.

Also, if I can't run it on high settings do you guys think the limiting factor would be the graphics card or the processor? If its the processor I might just go ahead and build a new machine.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

should be ok but the 550 ti is not really a 'gaming' card. as an option consider the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150505, only $10 more and you get a free deus ex game with it right now

High, although not likely Max. With a dual GPU card, you'll need to run thermal monitoring to make sure how hot that setup runs, and perhaps invest in a cooling tray.

that cpu should be just fine but be aware that the cpu is not the most important aspect of the system. the video card is just as if not more important

IMO, the GPU is definitely much more important the last few years. We have CPUs that have so many cores, so much more processing capacity, that the moderately priced CPUs are more than games really require, and yet the average graphics is worse off lately than it's been since we first were able to display 32-bit screens, dues to Intel's influence, and the popularity of low quality computing hardware (Netbooks, NetTops, and Tablets).

Hey everyone,

First post here, but I have been following these forums for a long time now. I have been playing computer games forever and am somewhat of a closet nerd. I have always bought my computers via Dell and have had no complaints thus far. My last computer was bought in Feb 2005, so obviously I am hurting when I try to play games on my current PC. I think I have a Geforce 5600 with 1 GB of RAM, it's not pretty. I am looking at potentally tackling building my own computer, and it seems like a daunting task. I have done a bit of research on the topic myself, and have also contacted someone who builds computers who gave me the following quote and setup. Keep in mind, I want this computer to last another 4-5 years, so I would like to go as high end as possible. I would also like to stay within my budget of $1,000 - $1,500. Also, I recently bought the below monitor to complement the new computer, (I think my current monitor is maybe 17 inches)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254052

See below for the quote the guy gave me. I would like advice on potential upgrades, better pieces to use for equivalent or equal cost, and any other tips.

Processor - Intel Core i7 Bloomfield 3.06ghz LGA1366 Quad Core - $ 311.99
Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth X58 LGA1366 Intel - $233.99
RAM Kingston - HyperX 16Gb (4x4gb) DDR3 - $137.99
Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 2Win (Fermi) 2gb DDR5 - $419.99
Hard Drive - Western Digital 1TB SATA HD $66.00
Optical Drive - 20X Sata DVD-RW $24.00
Operating System - Microsoft Window 7 Home Premium 64-Bit $114.00
Power Supply - Antec 750W Gamer Series High Current 113.50
Case - NZXT M59 $ 58.72

After taxes, labor, and the above prices supplied by the person, it comes to $1841.00. I looked up all of these items on newegg.com and I came up with a price of $1327.93, which is definitely more affordable for me, but the drawback is lack of overall warranty and me needing to make the computer myself. I was reading some reviews and was hearing that GTX 560 ti SLI is actually a pretty good value right now, and would last me a long time, but I would love everyone's input.

Thanks again for the help!

Nothxu

P.S. I thought I would edit this and include that the main purpose of the computer in the near term would be playing Skyrim on max settings and eventually Diablo 3 (which I think will be less demanding). I currently play SC2 (kind of, computer is so bad, it even locks up on low settings) and WOW.

You'll need a far better name for it than:

Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 2Win (Fermi) 2gb DDR5 - $419.99

to justify spending that much money!
