Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Discussion #25

Post » Mon Sep 19, 2011 12:33 pm

Here's my laptop:

Spoiler

Intel® Core 2 Duo CPU T6500 @ 2.10GHz
3072Mb RAM
DirectX 11
Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family

And here's my desktop:
Spoiler

Pentium® Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz
6144Mb RAM
DirectX 11
Intel® G45/G43 Express Chipset

I've also got a graphics card from a while back. It's probably way outdated, but I'll post the specs just in case:

128Mb, NV34, LP, OPPLX

That's what the receipt says, anyways...

I doubt it, but will any of them play Skyrim?

If I had another core and a better graphics card, would that make a worthwhile difference?

I don't know a thing about hardware, but these are the specs for a desktop I was looking at buying.

Intel Quad Core CPU Q9400 for Great Multitasking four core performance. Stock speed is 2.66 GHz with a turbo speed of 3.2 GHz.
MSI P35 Neo 2 motherboard with Intel Chipset, Copper Heat-pipes to keep both the chipset and power converter cool, Socket 775,
Dual 16x PCI-Express video, (4) memory slots for up to 16-Gigs of Dual Channel DDR2-1066 memory, (5) SATA connectors, (2) external e'Sata ports, up to (12) USB ports.
4-Gigs of Corsair XMS2 PC6400 memory, for best 64-bit Windows 7 performance.
Seagate 750 Gig 32-Meg Cache, 7200 RPM high density platter hard drive or larger hard drives below.
GeForce 8500GT PCI-Express DirectX-10 video card with 512Megs memory, with dual display outputs.
24x LiteOn Dual Layer DVD / CD-RW Burner to handle all your burning needs
Gigabyte 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet Port to connect to your High-Speed Internet
(8) 2.0-USB ports to connect digital cameras, printers, MP3 players, etc. . . (6) in the rear and two on the front
7.1 HD Surround Sound Audio with SPDIF header for digital outputs

Would that run Skyrim on the highest settings nicely?
Why or why not?
I appreciate any advice :)

Edit: It is posted for $350 on craigslist.

A better graphics card yes. I have a ATI 5770 and you can get those pretty cheap now. Its not high end more of a mid range card.

Neither iof those Integrated chips are any good, that's a fact. The Pentium CPU in the desktop is very poor, so no matter what the old video card might be, you are almost certainly out of luck. OK, I checked. That was a nasty old FX 5200 you wasted your monery on seven or eight years ago. Useless then, and worse now. You need a complete replacement of one computer or the other before you can play a modern type game.
If I had another core and a better graphics card, would that make a worthwhile difference?

The desktop PC would need a new mainboard, new RAM, and very likely a new power supply, before you could swap the CPU for a Core Duo processor. Intel changes sockets every few years, and a 478 or 775 socketed MB isn't going to work.

I was looking at the dual core on the desk top and didn't pay attention to it being an Integrated chip. Not good. As was said above, you basically have to gut out the PC and modernize it.

The 8500 GT is an old borderline card that equates to a Low End card today, so Low Quality Settings at a Medium Resolution, or Medium Settings at a Low Screen Resolution.

The Craigslist advertiser didn't mention the power supply, so I can't easily suggest a replacement video graphics card, since more power might be required than what was available. I think it's probably overpriced for what it is.

The Asus G73JH, 6GB ram, i7 720 QM quad-core 1.6 GHz (With Twin Turbo technology) and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (1GB) is a pretty awesome gaming laptop/notebook... Just sayin :whistling:

Intel core i7 @ 2,67 Ghz
nvidia geforce 9800 GT 1Gb
3 Gbs of RAM
Windows vista home premium 32-bit OS
1280*1024 resolution

I′m crossing my fingers for my PC to handle it at least at medium settings

Was going to buy a Asus G74 Gaming Laptop this week for Skyrim, mods and other games like BF3, MW3, and of course RAGE! Its specs are :

2nd Generation Intel Core i7-2630qm 2ghz With Turbo Boost Up To 2.9ghz CPU
8GB RAM (DDR3 1333mhz)
Metallic Keyboard
Win 7 Home Premium
Blu Ray & DVD +/- & CD Player
4 USB Ports (3 USB 2.0, 1 USB 3.0)
Media Card Reader
Webcam
Bluetooth
WIFI
Nvidia 3D Vision GTX560M with 3GB Ram
1.5 TB HDD (2 X 750 MB, 7200rpm)
17 Inch Screen (1920 x 1080 Screen Resolution)
1 HDMI Ports
8 Cell Battery

Now I was wondering since I was going to spend upwards of 2k for this laptop, whether I would be able to play Skyrim in 1920X1080 with settings on high? Or is that asking too much even for the GTX560M since there are GTX570's and 80's available in other brands? I don't want to have to turn down the resolution or I might as well go get my broken desktop fixed (needs a new PSU) . Asus are touting the G74 as a desktop replacement but I don't know if that is just Asus hype! If it is though I will sell off my desktop parts as I want mobility and gaming at any rate Thanks!

That should run the game max, but beware, my father bought that laptop about 6 months ago and it crashes every time he runs a game, but it's probably because he has it on "turbo mode" 24/7, so it's probably just overheating.

Where are you buying this from, it shouldn't cost even close to 2k?

EDIT: Also it will not max the game at at 1080p ^ Probably more like High settings as stated in the OP.

Hey, can someone please tell me if a Radeon HD 3400 video card will likely be able to run skyrim? My processor is 2.4 GHz Performance Rated at: 4.08 GHz. I don't have very much money at all to upgrade, and getting it for the pc is really my only choice so I would like to know if it's even a possibility with my computer haha. Thanks!

Yeah thats 2k Australian Dollars, yes I know the Aussie Dollar is on parity with the US atm but we still pay more for everything due to shipping import taxes etc. I thaught about ordering it from the US but by the time I added on Express Freight so I can track the order and then import charges by our government, it wasn't really much of a saving! $2100 to be precise! (also there is a good chance it would get held up at the border)

Here is a link to the going price here.

http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/asus/17-inch-notebook-sku-70310/

They reckon they can do it for 2100 though .

Hmmm maybe he should take it back, it shouldn't be doing that! Or he has other issues like driver issues, tell him to reinstall his latest display driver from Nvidia! As far as I can tell from the reviews, the Asus G74 is meant to have pretty good cooling?

I really hope I can max Skyrim but wouldn't be surprised if I have to turn AA or AF off, not that that really worries me I don't normally use AA in high resolutions anyhow!

It's definitely not Nvidia, because he as an ATI Mobility card...don't take the laptop back. It's different is ways and looks very high-end.

Ok so as you can see in my sig my GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 card. I've got it hooked up to my 1920x1080 HD monitor so Skyrim will prove challenging for it.

Now I'm thinking of upgrading my card to like 5970 or a 5990. Will this be worth it and make much of a difference??

It must be a different laptop then lol Because the G74's only come with GTX560M's as far as I am aware, at least that is the way it is here in Australia :)

The HD 3400 cards are bottom of the barrel, below current integrated chips, as you could see from post #1. The game is also likely to need a lot more than an older model A64 AMD processor like that one. Sorry, you'd surely not enjoy the results you would get with that machine.

Oh well. Thanks for the info, it's probably a good thing that I won't be able to spend all my time playing skyrim at college anyways haha. Thanks anyways
