Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Discussion #27

Post » Wed Sep 28, 2011 6:12 am

"5700 series" is pretty vague, I'm going to need the exact number (5750,5770) before I can make any recommendations in regard to that. At 5400rpm, your HDD is going to significantly increase load times as compared to a 7200rpm like the one in my sig. Your processor and RAM will do fine.

Thanks for the reply. Its the xfs 5770. also i don't know too much about advanced assembly, just basically how to add ram, a power supply and a pci video card. Ive heard of linking graphics cards together for better preformance? i have my old radeon 4350 lying around...

If it is the 5770, you are in the High range.

I also have a old 4350 in storage too :twirl:

While the video cards are pretty spot-on, as far as predictions go, it would be good to throw in recommended processors, and with that, comes the motherboard, memory, HDD or SSD.

No offense to you, tgl1992, but not everyone here has taken an IT course. I do find this thread exceptionally helpful but it would help many users if more parts were listed. I could help you compile them if you need to, but keep in mind that I'm just suggesting it. No offense intended.

Alright, here goes:

Operating System: MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP2
CPU: Intel Pentium D 945 Presler 65nm Technology
RAM: 2.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 266MHz (4-4-4-12)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. G31M-S2L (Socket 775)
Graphics: E70-3 (1024x768@75Hz) 128MB GeForce 8400 GS (Gigabyte) 57 °C
Audio: Realtek High Definition Audio

I am fully aware this is a weak system. I'm more interested in what I should update first.

I didn't make the list though

And I am not advanced in computers myself, the upgrades in my sig were my 1st ever upgrade to a store bought system. All the knowledge I give is from what I learned this year and do my best to give it,

CPU and GPU for sure. But for GPU, what is your power supply? (ask if you don't know how to check)

So my second 6950 shipped today, you guys tell me what are the chances of Skyrim using crossfire? Does Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas use the crossfire?

Ok cool, so how does the duo stack up against a 6990?

I dont think you will even need to, but it will be great for battlefield 3 and crysis 3 ;)

ONE 6950 is better then a 6990 http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

so two will blow it away if crossfire is enabled

-motherboards, wouldn't really help your performance so why make a list? Their practically all the same except for minor differences.
-RAM/Memory, most people have 4GB standard if not more, As long as you don't have under 2GB you will be able to run the game. (Not many people have under 2GB of ram, and if they do they usually need more than just a RAM upgrade)
-Any HDD/SSD would work, only thing they effect in games is load time. with 5400RPM(slowest), 7200RPM(Normal), SSD (fast).
-CPU, possibly but there's just to many to list.

Actually a 6990 is significantly faster then a 6950, that chart is incorrect. Although 6950's in Xfire should still be quite a bit faster than a 6990, Although IMO it's a little bit of overkill.

Im upgrading to a phenom 840 quad from my 2.3ghz x3 because I have a fear this game wont be well optimized to use the gpu and will need some help from the cpu :S but hopefully since todd mentioned that dx11 optimization features will be there my 470 may have a little more help playing at max ;)

edit: to your reply to my post.

Oh, Ive been around the bench marking forums for a while and everyone's always said they are trustworthy, Ill take your word for it though, since im not an ATI user myself

Don't count on it working with crossfire, pretty sure Oblivion had problems with SLI and Crossfire when it was released.
You don't need two anyway but just don't be suprised if you have to use one when Skyrim is released while waiting for a driver update or patch.

Doesn't matter, going from one 6950 to Xfire 6950 won't help in Oblivion anyway. It's not that it's not fast enough, it's just not optimized for newer technology. You can have 580 GTX in Sli I still doubt you'd max oblivion (heavily modded) with 60+ FPS.

True but I was referring to Skyrim, and since its a brand new game I am confident that amd will make the game fully compatible with the crossfire. And I highly doubt I will even look at Oblivion when Skyrim comes out.
