Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Discussion #32

6950, but if you are on a budget go for the 6850 then.

But before you do that, what is your wattage on your PSU?

I'm building a new PC from the ground up. PSU is 650.

I'm not really on a budget but I want to get the best value for my money.

In that case, 6950 :tops:

see what I did there... :spotted owl:

Jokes aside, 6950 for sure

Not really surprising, to be honest. Its Skyrim, not Crysis or Battlefield 3 :teehee:

Of course, the higher the prettier :hubbahubba:

What is best, 2GB or 1GB Radeon 6950, or 1GB 6950 or 6870?
Are they compatible with my motherboard?
Will I need to up my PSU?

I just can't resist to add a bit to this:

The 6870 is a good card, and the difference to a 6950 (with 1GB) is very slim. As long as you don't intend to use a higher resolution than 1920x1080, i'd go for the 6870 if you have to choose between those two. But in the long run the 6950 with 2GB will be the better choice as games will get more demanding and will use more of the memory on your card.

Right now i got two 6870 and so far i've found no game where those weren't enough. My extremely modded (including http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=43135 ;)) FO:NV runs fine, Rage looked (disregarding the texturebug) very nice, and the framerates are no problem as well. The only problem i had with the texturepacks was that i had to take the pack with the medium textures (4.6 GB), as the pack with high textures (7 GB) had a drastic impact on the framerates. There the 1 GB on my videocards didn't seem to be enough... <_<

There's been said enough regarding your mainboard. :goodjob:

Now some things regarding the PSU. 500w should be enough, if you have a good PSU. The problem is that this number on the sticker will not guarantee that it will work as promised. Two days ago i installed a 5870 in the system of a friend and his 650w PSU (something with flower or so) couldn't handle the card. With an old 500w Techsolo (and that one is definitely not a good PSU) we got his system running again. The system is a bit shaky, but he can still do something 'til his new PSU from Corsair arrives.

To make it short: don't believe the high numbers on the sticker of a PSU which doesn't come from a brand like Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, Enermax, or Silverstone. Quality costs, and i wouldn't try to save some bucks on a PSU which could kill way more expensive parts in my system if it dies.

He/she speaks the truth, when I was getting help in CD for my upgrades, I was told to keep a eye on Corsairs, Antecs, etc.

I doubt it, as any board that is supported by that processor is probably ancient as well, it mostly likely supports AGP or PCI as well for a dedicated video card, which then I don't even think there are any that would be adequate to run Skyrim with. Am I right or am I wrong? I am no expert. I think your talking about a cpu from the early 2000's.

The XPs, even the very late Bartons, were never matched to any PCIe chipsets. They are single core, run relatively hot, and are quite old, with the last new ones having been produced in 2006, five years ago, after the S754 and S939 A64s had been on the market for at least a year, maybe two, and coinciding with the X2 dual core S939s' release.

Therefore, I agree that they are obsolete, certainly no longer worth the time & consideration from game developers to worry about.

I can't remember my exact specs off the top of my head, but this is basically my computer:

-GTX 460 1bg
-(some ASUS motherboard)
-Intel i5 (something) 2.8ghz
-4gb 1600-DDR3
-750 Hard Drive 7200rpm

Hows this MONSTER going to play Skyrim? I'm assuming/hoping at least a combination of medium/high settings (high being the highest settings available).

(IDK if this is what this thread is for, but TY for responses!)

That's my resolution and I have an pretty well OC'd GTX 560 2GB (which is about as fast as a GTX 470). Certainly hope it flies, but I do like to max in-game settings and have been able to with FO3 and NV.

Really now?

Just when I was considering buying a 6950.

Now I'm considering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600083901%20600007779&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&CompareItemList=48%7C14-125-385%5E14-125-385-TS%2C14-150-527%5E14-150-527-TS%2C14-131-378%5E14-131-378-TS

As for your list, the ION 2 is actually a bit better than the 310m from what I've seen from pure graphical performance. The difference is the CPUs matched with the two video cards, the 310m usually getting the better end of the deal. As such, I think you need to factor in CPUs and other components into your equation more. Otherwise, you may end up with a lot of inaccuracies.

The ION 2 is actually based on the 305M/310M (Depending on the netbook usually whether it's a 10in or a 12in usually) and it's a bit slower then them both because of the slot that it is connected to cannot fully use the chip. This leads it to be quite a bit slower then the 310M and even the 305M and the fact that all ION 2 chips are in netbooks with sluggish Intel Atom processors doesn't help much either. Also yes the CPU's can greatly affect performance but their are just too many to list so I just use CPU Benchmark http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ it's fairly accurate IMO.

Both the ATI 6870 and the 6950 are great cards, just ask yourself if you think the price is worth the performance increase. Here's some benchmarks http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6950-1gb-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti-review/11

How do you think the old 4870x2 1gb cards will measure up in Skyrim?

I could run Oblivion at a high level with good frame rates but i havent been keeping up to date with the latest cards since i built this system and i just wondered how this older card would measure up or what it's modern day equivalent is.

I will probably upgrade before the game comes out so if anyone could recommend a decent upgrade on this card i'd appreciate it.

All the best.

What are the graphics for Skyrim like compared to Rage? I'm talking from a performance perspective.

My PC can play Rage on max with no AA, so do you think I can expect the same performance from Skyrim?

High settings, but with the right tweaks you are looking at close to max

Any idea roughly how much free space this game will take up? 10 GB or something? I need to know because I have a full hardrive and will be getting Skyrim on PC at some point.
