Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #62 w hard

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 6:04 pm

Sorry for the double post, but I would also like an opinion on this rig:

Name: Asus N56VM-RB51 15.6"

CPU: Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz

RAM: 8GB DDR3

GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GT 630M

HDD Size/Speed: 750GB 7200RPMs

Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230702 Runs for about $900.

Is there a difference between NVIDIA GT and GTX? Also, will any of these rigs max out Skyrim or any other games currently on the market? I'm also preparing at this time for ESO, and while specs aren't released yet, I want to be prepared for high settings on that game. I'm not having a repeat of my experience in WoW playing on minimum settings for 4 years.

This is not the thread you want for shopping help.

You want the Tech Thread in Community Discussion.

This thread is only to tell you how a given configuration will run Skyrim.

Note that my budget is ~$1,000. I already have access to a Monitor, and the OS I'll be using is going to be windows, which I need not purchase for this machine. So that is why those two pieces are missing from this build list.

Basically, I would like to know if you guys think this build will be able to handle Skyrim on Ultra, as well as the many Re-texture, re-lighting, climate, and ENB mods I'll be installing. Any help on fixing this build to make it run better, without destroying my budget is also appreciated!

CPU - Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor - $220
Motherboard - GB GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 MB - $145
Memory - Mushkin Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Mem - $35
Storage - Mushkin Chronos 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk - $105
Hard Drive - Seagate Barracude 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM IHD - $70
Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card - $240
Case - Cooler Master Storm Scout ATX Mid Tower Case - $67
Power Supply - SeaSonic S12ll 620W 80 PLUS Bronze Cert ATX12V / EPS12V - $79
Optical Drive - Samsung SH-224BB DVD/CD Writer - $18

Thoughts?

Hello, just want to know if this laptop can run skyrim on at least medium to high settings:

3rd Generation Intel? Ivy Bridge Core i5-3210M Intel? HM77 Chipset

750GB 7200RPM [Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache]

nVIDIA? GeForce GTX 660M GDDR5 (2.0GB) w/ Optimus Technology

8GB - DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)

Thanks in advance.

I would say at least high, possibly ultra depending on your res. Check the skyrim bench here http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-660M.71859.0.html backs up my prediction.

I see the 1GB ATI Radeon HD6670 on the list, but what about the 2GB? How well would that run it? Would it be around the same sort of level, or in Ultra?

No difference at all. The second GB is a marketing scam.

Well it depends if he is using a lot of texture mods as I certainly use my 2gb on my card during skyrim. But vanilla skyrim, yes wont have any difference.

It depends on the memory system bandwidth, which in its own turn is a function of both memory speed and core speed. Most "Medium" cards only offer a 128 bit memory system with which 256 MBs is the USUAL amount of VRAM manipulated constantly, and 512 MBs frequently. The RAM has to be GDDR5 and the core fairly fast to even use a full GB on a regular basis. VERY few graphics cards with only a 128 bit memory system ever have the bandwidth to go past a GB in game playing.

For large amounts of VRAM and very high resolutions, the memory systems need to be 256 bit ones. Since I don't have any other use for Graphics cards with a lot of RAM other than for games, it's possible that some programs / activities can use "slow RAM" in spite of NARROW bandwidth, but 3D animation isn't among them.

Hmm, would you be able to tell me what sort of performance I could expect from these specs? Just a computer I'm planning on getting. I do intent to use a lot of graphics mods, too, but only if it could handle it.

4.2GHz AMD, FX 4170 Fast Quad Core Bulldozer Processor

1GB ATI Radeon HD 7770 Graphics Card

8GB DDR3 RAM

Any other info you need at all?

Your probably right Gorath but i use all of my vram i can assure you, i have a 256 memory bandwith and gddr5 memory though.

@jakey That should give you decent performance but i would get a 2gb card if you want to use a lot of graphical mods.

Thanks for your help. Here's another potential buy I'm looking at.

4.4GHz Overclocked AMD, FX 4170 Fast Quad Core Bulldozer Processor
2GB ATI Radeon HD 7850
16GB DDR3 RAM

What about that one? I'm just browsing the market at the moment, trying to find a gaming PC that's not going to break the bank.

Well I can vouch for the 7850 as I have one and have a LOT of graphical mods installed, play on ultra and also have a enb mod installed and get 40-50 fps in the wilderness, dips to 30 in places. Inside I get 60fps most places with occasional dips to 45-50fps. So it is a great card and get a lot of bang for your buck. I would personally stick to intel as the sandy and ivy bridge chips are a LOT better than the AMD FX chips, the gaming performance of the intel chips is quite a bit better than the amd chips.

If you want to save some money, get 8gb ram as that will be plenty unless you have a reason for wanting more. I only have 16 as I do a lot of VM work.

Recently bought Skyrim on Steam, I can get it to work but at lowest settings with alot of lag.

- Intel? HD Graphics Family (I'm assuming this is the problem)
- 4GB Ram
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
- Intel? Core? i3-2120 CPU@ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs) ~ 3.3GHz

You need a dedicated GPU.

It should run maxed out although for that price i'd expect a better gpu than a 7770. Will handle skyrim fine though.
Yes as deaths soul said, its because of the integrated gpu which isn't meant for gaming. It looks like that's a desktop so you can buy a dedicated gpu from AMD or NVidia. If you want help choosing just say.

I'm getting an HP EliteBook 8470w. It has an AMD M2000 graphics card. It appears I should be able to run Skyrim in medium settings but input is welcome. I'm getting it through work for free so I can't exactly complain.

Its supposedly comparable to the 7650m so yeah i'd say medium but I wouldn't expect much more. Not bad for a free laptop, but it is a business laptop and not designed for gaming.

The 210 is incredibly weak with regards to the desktop variant, so the mobile version is even weaker.

If you even get the game to run, it won't run well.
