Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread

Post » Sun Jul 10, 2011 6:37 am

Am I the only one who thinks people are being incredibly over-optimistic here? My PC is a C2D E6600 @ 2.4 ghz with 2gb RAM and a 4850. It scraqes minimum settings for every game released this year which generally translates as "Yeah it'll run, it'll look worse than Duke Nukem 3D and run at 10fps but it'll run" I'd expect you'd need at least a 3ghz quad core with 4gb and a 560gtx to match the 360 version.

I don't think I've been optimistic.

Yes if CPU is:

-An Intel dual core E6600 2.4GHz or better
-An AMD dual core Athlon II or better 2.5GHz or better

Yes if GPU is:

-A Nvidia GTX 7900x2 or 8800 GTS [G80] or 8800GS, 9600GT or better.
-An ATI HD3850 or better.

I did lower my stated expectation for the GPU, but that was in regard to "ABSOLUT minimum" :foodndrink:

I was considering what would be the minimum on the back of the box and equivalent cards, not what I'd want minimally.

As for your rig:

C2D E6600 @ 2.4 ghz with 2gb RAM and a 4850

The first thing I'd do [unless you are considering a new build] is add another 2GB of RAM. If you are running x86 or if you only have 2 DIMM slots, then grab 1-2GB stick and forgo dual-channel because dual-channel is negligible and actually having the memory is what counts. It is also a cheap upgrade, relatively speaking. Since Skyrim has no x64 .exe :sadvaultboy: :banghead: ...that will keep Skyrim from taking more than 2GB, but you will at least have a full 2GB for the game plus whatever for the OS.

How would my system do?

CPU: Intel® Core(TM i5 CPU 750 (2.6 GHZ)
4 GB RAM
GPU: Radeon HD6850 1024 MB

Screen resolution: 1920* 1080

I know the GPU will done fine, but I am a bit worried about the CPU. However I can run games like Dragon Age 2 or Shogun 2 Total War without much problems.

Your CPU has a Intel's TurboBoost. Even if it didn't it would be fine, but that it can boost cores to 3.2GHz as needed... it is just a little more fine.

I think you mentioned before it was a 4850. If Bethesda do their job right you'll be fine, that system is way more powerful than a 360. If they do their job badly you'll be a bit better off than the 360 version but nowhere near as much as you should be. If they do a hideously lazy and slapdash port then you'll have to drop the graphics down quite a bit but it should still run reasonably well and look okay just not as good as the 360 version.

Going on the performance of every PC release this year that isn't Portal 2 and the horrible job they did with Oblivion I'm expecting the latter.

For myself I'm still on 32 bit so a RAM upgrade is pretty much pointless, I don't think there's much point doing a processor upgrade because there isn't a socket 775 processor on the market that's going to be above minimum spec more than a few months and a newer graphics card wouldn't help all that much. It's going to have to be a new system but that'll have to wait till the PS4 comes out because I can imagine requirements really skyrocketing then.

Yes, to start off I'm sure it will run OK.

Is your HD4850 a 512MB or 1GB version? This will matter, you may stutter more if you only have 512MB on the GPU.

For the CPU, the Q8400 is a bit short on L2 cache, but the Penryn architecture is good. How well optimized is Skyrim for quads? Nobody knows.

Single Core CPU?

Enjoy your Xbox 360 game.

?

I know my processor isn't the greatest but there was no reason for that. I just wanted insight on my specs, and its cool if you have an opinion about it but no need to pick on it. Ive played Assassins Creed on it before and it played fine.

EDIT: Thanks Rohugh :)

For a 32bit OS you are limited to 4GB, including VRAM. If you increase your system memory it can help depending on the game [Yeah they're 2GB vs 4GB benchmarks, can't find 2 vs 3. For the most part the point is that going over 2GB in your system is good for gaming performance]:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2008/07/08/is-more-memory-better/5

Having more RAM, just another gig even, could prevent some RAM bottlenecks, decreasing the severity of some dips in FPS and decreasing the frequency of those dips.

I didn't mean it in a nasty way, I just didn't want to make a lengthy explanation. I just thought to myself "How do I make this short n' sweet?"

I didn't think you'd be so sensitive... or have something against the Xbox 360.

Ram: The ram is OK but I would highly advise you upgrade to a faster mhz speed.

Processor: I suggest upgrading to a 2 core processor. You can even go for a quad-core if you're willing to spend a little more, they aren't incredibly over priced so that's a good thing.

Video card: If you have the budget, upgrade to the radeon 5XXX series or 6XXX series. Otherwise I think you'll slide by with the current GPU

Radeon HD 6850, a good buy for Skryim?

I am in the process of amassing parts for my new computer and I have been shopping around for video cards and according to Video Card Benchmark It is one of the best "bang for the buck" video cards out there. It is capable of 3D as well as up to 6 monitors at once, the eyefinity website claims. But i just wanted to check with my fellow peoples who are anxious for Skryim to see if we thought it was cut out to run the game on "ultimate"/"premier"/"best"

  • i7-2600K OC @ 4.6GHz
  • GTX 580 1.5GB OC
  • 8GB DDR3 1600

I'm hoping this will be able to max out all settings @ 1920x1080 and still maintain above 60 frames per second...

I considered posting this in other threads but figured it would be best to start a new thread since this is specific to this computer part.

Depends on what kind of offers you can get, when I was looking there was only about a £18 ~$25 difference between the 6850 and 6950 and the 6950 is apparently quite a big upgrade. Even if the game is well optimised you can always pile on more mods.

It is best to and buy all at once in case a part is bad, you'll want to exchange it. You can buy the case in advance.

The HD6850 is a good card. If you save and wait, you might do better, you might find a deal if you bundle certain parts.

I will be subbing them into my dad's gaming computer while the the other parts are not chosen/bought/arrived because most of them will work with his computer.

I am getting $60 off if i buy it before the end of july.

If it runs 15-20fps on the lowest settings I would be surprised, nothing to really upgrade seeing as it is a laptop.

Seems I got skipped earlier in the thread. Anybody have thoughts on this setup? It's a dell xps 410. Kinda hard to upgrade.

Here are my specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
8600 GT
Vista 32 bit
4 GB Memory

Do I even stand a chance of playing Skyrim?

*I can play F:NV on all high settings with no lag at all.

Thanks!
