Unofficial "Will my pc run skyrim" Thread #5

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:57 am

Looks okay.

Could we have a clock speed on your CPU? Not that it won't handle Skyrim, but it would be nice to have that rather important figure.

The clock speed on a i5 2400 is 3.1GHz [Turbo 3.4GHz]

FYI:

i5 2300 - 2.8-3.1, locked multi
i5 2500 - 3.3-3.7, same
i5 2500 - same, unlocked multi.

i7 2600 - 3.4 - 3.8, locked,
i7 2600k - Same, unlocked

...in truth though, clock speed doesn't really matter if the CPU is an i5 or i7, you can assume it will plow through Skyrim pretty well as they all turboboost. My laptop i7 starts at 1.6GHz and it plows pretty much everything.

As for i3 CPUs, they don't have turboboost, but the lowest Desktop is 2.5GHz and will surely run Skyrim... so they won't be an issue. Only the bottom half of i3 mobile processors and the i5 430UM should be where a problem starts with the "i" series.

Can anyone rate my system?

( ... )

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4200
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x9710)
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9710&SUBSYS_83A21043&REV_00

Posted Today, 05:44 AM
A Radeon HD 4200 is only a Chipset's video chip, not a real CARD, and as such cannot be expected to be at all useful for gaming. It has very few shader processors, runs at a slow core speed, and has no VRAM of its own, so has to borrow System Memory (slow for graphics), so it is well below minimum for any recent game, let alone for one that hasn't even been released yet.

I built a new system back in April for my birthday. I specifically built it so I could MAX out my games (Skyrim and Battlefield 3.)

CPU: Core i7 2600k @ 4.4 GHz
RAM: 8GB G. Skill Ripjaws X series 1600MHz CL8
Mobo: Asus P8P67 Deluxe
GPU: GTX 580 and GTX 285 Ded. PhysX
PSU: Corsair AX850 watt
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Fatality Edition PCI.
Cooling: Thermalright Silver Arrow
Monitor: Gateway FHD2401 24" 1920 x 1200

My real question is, will I be able to max Skyrim out with a single GTX 580? I was thinking that if it couldn't I would get a second one later this year when the prices drop. I like to max out absolutely everything and get a minimum framerate of 60. If I can handle it though, then I wouldn't mind saving the money.

Yes, a single GTX 580 will easily max the game.

I'm not sure whether I should stick with my HD 6670 or upgrade to either a 6770 or GTX 560 Ti. My tv doesn't have a HDMI port since it's pretty old, does anyone know if the 6770 or GTX 560 Ti have a VGA port.

Almost all of them have dedicated DVI ports now, but VGA is a rare port to find on most modern cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=DVI%20to%20VGA&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

I'm hoping that a single 570 will max Skyrim. I am almost certain that it will, considering it runs The Witcher 2 on ultra settings, with only ubersampling turned off. Does anyone disagree with me that a 570 will be sufficient to run Skyrim on max?

Of course it will! You'd be crazy to think otherwise! Excluding the 590, the 580 is the top nvidiA card, and the 570 is the second. Any of the high end nvidiA cards will tear through skyrim. I have a 570 too, so don't worry we are fine. Our cards cost more then a console, and are a lot more powerful. The only reason they wouldnt max skyrim is if you had a multi monitor setup with a crazy res. Or if skyrim is a terrible port.

I'm running a 570 as well, and I am 110% certain we'll be pushing well over 100fps on max settings with Skyrim. The Creation Engine is a reiteration of Gamebryo, and considering they're utilizing DX11 optimization (without the use of newer shader tech, etc. that eat more processing power from the GPU) a single GTX570 will breeze through Skyrim. You're .. ahem WE are .. definitely in the clear!

:) Hope that helps.

taken via Speccy, I -really- wanna get Skyrim on PC but as my PC can't even run WoW with everything set to ultra I may have to buy the 360 version until I get a new PC. My computer is brilliant with textures but when Polygons, Shadows and particles build up...I start to have problems. (Got a Frostmourne mod for TES4, so much mesh it made my game freeze when I equipped it.)

probably about the best you could get with the rig is medium or so. the main 3 components, CPU, GPU and especially your RAM would all need serious upgrading to run on high/ultra which may also require further upgrades (MOBO and PSU). if you already plan on a new pc i'd just wait and get the new pc and start out with the 360 version until you have the new machine.

Saw interesting benchmark recently. NVIDIA card with a lower power NVIDIA dedicated physX is slower that just the higher end NVIDIA because the 580 physX will be better. Try checking your frame rates with just the 580.

For ATI cards it is better but apparently not NVIDIA.

Where was this? I'd be interested to see where the crossover points were.

I have no doubt that I'll be able to run it, but I'm not sure what settings it will run smooth at.

My system:

CPU; AMD Athlon 2 X4 620 (4CPU's) ~2.6GHz
GPU; ASUS nVidia Geforce 9800GT 1GB
RAM; 4GB ddr2
HDD; SAMSUNG HD103SJ 1TB
SOUND; On-Board
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

As you can see it's getting a little old but I run crysis on max with decent frame-rate. Surely I can run Skyrim if I can run Crysis.?

yes you should be fine. until we get new details on the engine though i wouldn't completely bank on ultra settings but definitely on high.

By now, a 9800 GT is a four year old video card design (upgraded, slightly, from the 8800 GT). It's still a "Medium" card compared to most of today's cards, because it was REALLY gang-busters fast four years ago. Skyrim isn't going to really stress it, I don't think, but I also doubt you can go all the way to Max with it.

So my G card is definatly fine, just my RAM and CPU? I have no idea how to upgrade either...

I'm fairly confident I'll get a pretty good speed from it, I've not had to run a game on anything less than full yet, however I'm way out of touch on technology so if anyone can speculate reassuringly I'll be delighted.

This thread is not about how much money anyone wants to waste, or how that waste reflects upon the guilty party, it's about whether a given PC will perform at an acceptable level based on the best estimates of the requirements for Skyrim. Anyone posting obvious maxxed out configurations is posting SPAM, and will be reported as doing so, as I have done in this present case.

Now, can we get back to business here?

This.

My system is fairly high end, I have no concern about processor, ram, psu or HDD, my video however is suspect

I'm currently running a pair of XFX ATI 5750s in CF

I would like to run skyrim at max on my 23" 1080P samsung, anyone have any thoughts on what video cards I should be updating to, if at all?

I'll spend around $500, and I'm okay with single card or CF/SLi configurations.

The theme for this system is sheer bang for the buck

for reference my specs are as follows:

i5 750 at 3.33Ghz
g.skill ripjaws, 8GB
1000W OCZ psu (gold standard)
ocz 100GB SSD (vertex 2, I believe)

i'd look at a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130587 or wait for a 590.

your psu should drive either one just fine. i'd bet when the 590 is available it will be a tad higher than your budget though.

I'm not sold on nvidia right now, why go with a 580 when a 6970 costs 130 less and from what I can see is better in just about every way?
