Unofficial "Will my pc run skyrim" Thread #5

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:30 am

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1212242-unofficial-can-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread/

If anyone had a question from the previous thread that did not get answered before the post limit lockdown, feel free to repost it here.

This thread is the catch-all discussion thread for questions concerning computer hardware and its capability of running The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Please post all system spec queries here, as all other threads on this topic are liable to be closed.

The general rule of thumb here is that we are comparing the systems you post with the official system specs for the Xbox 360, which is the platform the game is primarily being designed for. These specs (in basic) are:

CPU: IBM Xenon @3.2GHz (Three cores)
Memory: 512Mb DDR3 (this memory is shared by the CPU and GPU and is bandwidth-accelerated by an onboard eDRAM chip)
GPU: Xenos graphics chip @ 500MHz
>DirectX 9.0c
>Shader Model 3.0
>No dedicated VRAM (it shares the system RAM)

What this means is that although the game will likely not be very demanding graphically (at least, before factoring in the increased texture resolutions and various other graphics features the PC gamers will get), it will likely put a heavy load on the CPU, and it is recommended to have at least a quad-core, although dual cores will probably not have too much issue so long as they have a reasonable clock speed (about 2.8 GHz on a modern dual-core should do).

We then take into account the fact that the game will likely not be as well optimized on the PC due to varying hardware setups. We also take into account the different optimization techniques required for PC setups due to the existence of, for instance, dedicated GPU memory. This means we are expecting Skyrim to require a decent processor of at least dual-core architecture with a reasonably fast clock speed, and GPUs with at least a 512Mb dedicated framebuffer and reasonable core clocks and memory clocks, as well as at least 4Gb of system RAM. If you meet these requirements, you should be able to run Skyrim; maybe not at the highest graphics settings without incurring a large performance hit, but you should be able to run it.

MODS EDIT:
General notice to begin with: at this point the system requirements are not yet known. Anything is speculation and conjecture at this moment. Asking about the requirements can yield an educated guess at best.

- From now on we're going to use this as the system requirement and speculation thread for both PC-systems and laptops.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We'll also use this thread for general speculation regarding the anticipated and expected system requirements; be it minimum, recommended and optimum.

- This thread can also be used to ask about possible and potential upgrades that people plan or may want to make.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

- Once the official system requirements have been made public by Bethesda, we can change the topic to 'Will my system run Skyrim?'.

- Since this is unofficial, there are no guarentees and the administration may decide to change the course of this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report fuction to report these new threads to the moderators.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

Thanks in advance. :)

I also play on a console, But I do my serious gaming on my PC :user: .. I saved up for 5 months to buy it..

Thankfully I have a job, but my Girlfriend also helps me pay for some of my other hobbies..

Most people are fine with being able to just run games on their PC.. I like to Max out settings and play with the best graphics possible.. which is not cheap.

Like RAGE?, I hope to run that on Maximum.

And to answer your question, Yes. I love showing my baby off.:disguise: I need to take pictures, but the iPhone 3GS svcks for pictures.. (I need a new phone next) :sadvaultboy:

you can be pretty rough with the components hell RAM sometimes needs a good amount of pressure to put it in.

Well, I was really referring to me having to work my hand into a very tough and rather painful position to get access to the SATA ports because they're positioned at a right angle to the board right next to my case Hard Drive housing. Grr... :flame:

It does require a bit of force to plug in expansion cards and RAM, but NEVER, EVER, EVER will you need to force the CPU, nor should you.

Most websites are terribly inaccurate. For an unreleased game, like Skyrim, you are better off asking the community, and in Skyrim's case that's us. List your specs and we'll make our judgement.

I'm not sure whether I should stick with my HD 6670 or upgrade to either a 6770 or GTX 560 Ti. My tv doesn't have a HDMI port since it's pretty old, does anyone know if the 6770 or GTX 560 Ti have a VGA port.

Meh... You can buy an awesome computer for way less than $6400. I built mine for about $1300 so far:

Mobo: ASUS Crosshair IV Formula
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 @3.6GHz (55 C idle on air in my rather warm room)
Heatsync: Thermaltake SpinQ VT (the thing takes up a lot of space in my full ATX case)
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600
GPU: XFX AMD Radeon HD6870
PSU: Antec TRUEPOWER NEW 750W
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATAIII 6.0GB/s
That ASUS board has a pretty sick built in Creative X-Fi soundcard, too.

It's all put in my beautiful, big Cooler Master HAF 932 with plenty of big fans pushing air throughout the case.

I'd say a Radeon HD 6850 or so. I think they've a pretty good price/quality ratio. If you want more performance and you're in the mood to spend around 240 bucks or so, then go for the 6950 or a good overclocked GTX 560 Ti (like the one I've recently purchased).

You'll probably need a new power supply. Here are a few http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=Property&N=100007657&IsNodeId=1&Manufactory=1400%2C1697%2C1516%2C1459%2C9830&bop=And&CompareItemList=58|17-139-028^17-139-028-TS%2C17-371-031^17-371-031-TS%2C17-371-048^17-371-048-TS%2C17-371-030^17-371-030-TS, though Seasonic and PC Power & Cooling are also good makers. You're basically looking for similar wattage and amps on the 12v rails as the ones in the link. There is another link of more power supplies at the end with a few good deals I missed the first time.

Suggested Video Cards. The HD6850 is OK, but the price is close enough to the 6870 for the step up to be the better price/performance pick. The best card for the ~$150, ~$200 and ~$250 price points.

Looks okay.

Could we have a clock speed on your CPU? Not that it won't handle Skyrim, but it would be nice to have that rather important figure.
