Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #11

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:46 am

Heh, you better sit down. I've been waiting for Sandy Bridge-E, Radeon HD 7000, Nvidia Kepler and the Bulldozer since the beginning of this year, and technically they all should have been released by September. But all of them have been delayed, either to Nov or 1Q 2012.

I grew so tired of seeing continuous news about delays that I bought a GTX 560 Ti as a temporary solution for Skyrim.

Hmm... well, in that case, I might just get 2 GTX 460s and put them in SLI, I've been looking at performance comparisons and two 460s pretty much match a single GTX 580 and are still cheaper. But i'm not sure if i would need more power than 600watts.

And if you're willing to spend the money on two 460....wouldn't it be better to buy a single GTX 580 (what's the price difference between them, anyway? I bet not much), thus leaving room for a 2nd one in SLI in the future when prices drop? To be honest, by putting two 460 in SLI in order to match a single GTX 580, you only limit the "future-proof-ess" of your system....

IMO, of course :)

Heh, with the 4770 you'll be lucky if you can run the game on Low-Normal...

Well, according to the quote i'm getting, two 460s would be about $200 less than a single 580, and only slightly cheaper than a 570, while the performance comparisons between the 460s against the 570 and the 580 shows that the 460s are better in most regards. Also, i am resigned to the fact that i'm going to replace the two of them within a couple of years anyway. I really appreciate any advice though.

What about a middleground? One GTX 570 now, a 2nd one in the future in SLI. Have you considered it?

I have... but http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/306?vs=314 looks so good... and in a few years when i replace them, there will be a new generation of cards probably... you have a good point though. Decisions, decisions.

The desktop...Medium-Max without problems. The laptop...at very, VERY low, and still being generous.

They're always a pain in the ass

Your choice. Either buy now the 4xx and change them later for the 7xx (most probably when you feel like changing them those would be the current generation), or buy a 5xx, then expand it by putting a second one. Either choice is respectable...

This is not self-evident.
I can e.g. The Witcher 2 do not play smoothly on max settings (supersampling off)

Skyrim is not The Witcher 2. For instance, there's the "small" difference than TW2 is PC-exclusive, where Skyrim isn't.

Many people are just making suggestions of very powerful cards and not asking to see if their PC's are even capable of handling the card...That's not helping anyone.

If you have an intel i7, a 1 gig video card, and 4 gigs ram, you'll be able to run Skyrim just fine.

FATALITY... this should annihilate Skyrim, I'm using a 2500k with a 1GB 560 ti and it'll run it 1080p hdmi modded to death on ultra at 40 FPS+ from what I've heard, so you'll be running this on ultra *hi-5*

A 1GB video card means nothing...a ATI 3200 1GB certainly isn't going to run the game very well if at all while a 5670 512MB would destroy that card. Just because you have a 1GB card DOES NOT mean you'll be able to run Skyrim for sure.

Both the CPU and GPu need upgrading. Both upgrading the GPU to a 6870 will be complete overkill for your resolution and you'll notice the difference in a good GPU before a CPU. You can get a 6870 at Newegg.com. It's like $189.99 with two free games with it.

And since when the vram amount is synonim of a GPU's power?

The laptop could run it on Medium I'd guess.

With that GPU? No. Don't talk if you don't know what you're talking about. Just an advice. And not even the first time it has been said to you.

You should do reasonably well, probably Medium settings at your screen resolution for good FPS, and perhaps up to high if you can live with some FPS drops here and there. Would have preferred to see what clock speed your CPU reaches when it turbos up for gaming, but that should do you good.

Thanks for the reply. It goes up to 2.66 GHz, i think. This is a link to my processor's specs: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i5-450M-Notebook-Processor.31141.0.html
