Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #13

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 6:26 am

I'm thinking of upgrading my 4850 1gb to a 6870. Would this upgrade be worth it, or should I wait until more powerful cards are available? (the 6900s are a little out of my budget right now)

Also, would a Phenom 9950 BE @ 2.6GHz bottleneck a 6870?

That's like asking if a rocket launcher can kill a squirrel.

The CPU may bottleneck it a little bit, but if you OC it I still think the 6870 would give you a solid performance increase.

My current setup is:

- Asus P5Q PRO
- HIS Radeon HD 4870 512 MB
- Intel core 2 duo E8500 3.16GHz
- 4GB of ram
- Windows vista home premium

Will this be able to run the game at all, and on witch settings? I play Fallout: New Vegas on ultra settings. When I stand still I have around 60 fps, and if I move slowly it still stays on 60 fps. But if I move fast and shoot it might jump down to 30 really fast and sometimes even 10... Is this a bug or do I really need a new setup? Sorry for a little off topic qestion :)

Anyway, if I have to get a new setup I will propably get a:

- ASUS P8P67 PRO
- XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5
- Intel Core i5 Quad Processor i5-2500K 3,3GHz
- 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
- Windows 7 home premium

Or:

- Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
- XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5
- Intel Core i7 Quad Processor i7-960, Quad Core, 3,2Ghz
- 6GB DDR3
- Windows 7 home premium

Witch one of these two would you chose? Both will propably run Skyrim on High settings. I would like a i7 processor but I really don't trust the Gigabyte motherboards, heard a lot of complains about them. And with the last one I would only get a 2 GB upgrade. I am not good at this, some help would be appriciated. And one last question, how many years do you think these setups will last? I bought he setup I have now witch you can find at the top 4 years ago for 15000£. I want this to last the same amount of time, I know it is hard to tell but if you have any clue it would be nice to hear what you have to say.

Thanks in advance, all help would be appriciated <3

The i5 will be plenty. Unless you're doing some super video editing, you can just overclock the i5 and will be perfectly fine. Not sure what you mean by 2GB upgrade but I think you're talking about RAM, and either 6 or 8 will be plenty. Just make sure you use a 64-bit OS. I can't really answer your first question because I'm a bad judge at what setups would run at unless they're brand new and will smoke whatever they're built for.

AMD Phenom? 8650 X3 Triple-Core 2,3Ghz
4 GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 1GB DDR2

and

Intel i3 m330 2.13Ghz
4GB RAM
Nvidia GT 330M

Will these run 1920x1080 and 1280x720 (and 1366x768 for laptop screen when I don't have my TV on hand), respectively?
