Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #13

Post » Fri Aug 19, 2011 11:31 pm

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1221425-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread-12/

If anyone had a question from the previous thread that did not get answered before the post limit lockdown, feel free to repost it here.

This thread is the catch-all discussion thread for questions concerning computer hardware and its capability of running The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Please post all system spec queries here, as all other threads on this topic are liable to be closed.

The general rule of thumb here is that we are comparing the systems you post with the official system specs for the Xbox 360, which is the platform the game is primarily being designed for. These specs (in basic) are:

CPU: IBM Xenon @3.2GHz (Three cores)
Memory: 512Mb DDR3 (this memory is shared by the CPU and GPU and is bandwidth-accelerated by an onboard eDRAM chip)
GPU: Xenos graphics chip @ 500MHz
>DirectX 9.0c
>Shader Model 3.0
>No dedicated VRAM (it shares the system RAM)

What this means is that although the game will likely not be very demanding graphically (at least, before factoring in the increased texture resolutions and various other graphics features the PC gamers will get), it will likely put a heavy load on the CPU, and it is recommended to have at least a quad-core, although dual cores will probably not have too much issue so long as they have a reasonable clock speed (about 2.8 GHz on a modern dual-core should do).

We then take into account the fact that the game will likely not be as well optimized on the PC due to varying hardware setups. We also take into account the different optimization techniques required for PC setups due to the existence of, for instance, dedicated GPU memory. This means we are expecting Skyrim to require a decent processor of at least dual-core architecture with a reasonably fast clock speed, and GPUs with at least a 512Mb dedicated framebuffer and reasonable core clocks and memory clocks, as well as at least 4Gb of system RAM. If you meet these requirements, you should be able to run Skyrim; maybe not at the highest graphics settings without incurring a large performance hit, but you should be able to run it.

MODS EDIT:
General notice to begin with: at this point the system requirements are not yet known. Anything is speculation and conjecture at this moment. Asking about the requirements can yield an educated guess at best.

- From now on we're going to use this as the system requirement and speculation thread for both PC-systems and laptops.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread.

- We'll also use this thread for general speculation regarding the anticipated and expected system requirements; be it minimum, recommended and optimum.

- This thread can also be used to ask about possible and potential upgrades that people plan or may want to make.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

- Once the official system requirements have been made public by Bethesda, we can change the topic to 'Will my system run Skyrim?'.

- Since this is unofficial, there are no guarentees and the administration may decide to change the course of this thread.

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report fuction to report these new threads to the moderators.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

Thanks in advance.

I know that my laptop can run skyrim but I don't know which settings that I will be able to run smoothly. Medium, High or Ultra High(if exist)?

Btw my specs:

2,.66GHz Intel Core i7, 4MB shared level 3 cache
4GB DDR3 SORAM
NVDIA Geforce GT 330M 512MB of GDDR3 memory

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8GHz
ASRock P55DE3
8 Gigs DDR3
EVGA GTX 285 (1G)

Would it be worth upgrading my card to a GTX580 to run on max, or would it make that much of a difference? If I do, I'll need a new power supply too.

Not worth it you will be playing Skyrim fine with it, but if you have the money a 580 won't hurt but for Skyrim the difference wouldn't be as noticeable as lets say BF3 will until high res mods come out of course which will be plenty enough time to save extra cash for a 580

I just received my new skyrim rig I ordered from newegg the other day. Upon booting (even in the bios screen) I have vertical blue lines. It gets BSOD also. I tried reinstalling windows 7 and it got through the installation, but it BSOD when I rebooted it, (was limited to 640x480) and it consistently has the vertical cyan colored lines, one on the left, right and middle. In the bios screen, there is little T's everywhere that have two || below the upper bar of the T.

I think the video card is toast. It's a Radeon HD 6870. Any ideas? I'll call newegg tomorrow.

It sounds like the graphics card.

You'll be fine just turn down a setting or two and you'll have OK framerates.

You'd be better off waiting for some Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. I'm not sure if the Cyber Monday deals apply to international orders, or if they would justify the cost of International shipping though, if you're not in North America.

You have a fairly powerful card so I think you have nothing to gain by a costly preemptive upgrade. If I were you I'd wait for Skyrim and see how it runs, because your machine will likely run it very well.

You'll probably only be able to get low settings maybe a touch of medium if your native resolution is really low.

Well well do you think my laptop will run it?

Intel i7-2720QM
8GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

Definitely try to go for a laptop with a 560M, the performance difference between the 540M/560M is huge. The 560M is around %50 or even %60 faster.

Of course, you'll max Skyrim with ease.

I should be able to run it at at least medium with a HD5770 and a Phenom II Quad-core 3.2GHz, right?

Depends on your resolution, but you'll probably be able to get high settings.

Since I can't stand widescreen monitors (It's just that I'm not used to 'em, really), I'll be using 1280x1024.

Then you'll definitely get high settings if not max the game at that resolution. :celebration:

I'm thinking of upgrading my 4850 1gb to a 6870. Would this upgrade be worth it, or should I wait until more powerful cards are available? (the 6900s are a little out of my budget right now)

Also, would a Phenom 9950 BE @ 2.6GHz bottleneck a 6870?

To all who use Boot Camp for the Mac OS X (please refrain from flaming macs, I know you all hate them), has anyone had any luck with Oblivion? My old Mac ran it rather badly, and I'm wondering if I should just invest in a small PC laptop, though it will be costly.
