Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #13

Post » Sun Aug 21, 2011 1:22 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my 4850 1gb to a 6870. Would this upgrade be worth it, or should I wait until more powerful cards are available? (the 6900s are a little out of my budget right now)

Also, would a Phenom 9950 BE @ 2.6GHz bottleneck a 6870?

That's like asking if a rocket launcher can kill a squirrel.

The CPU may bottleneck it a little bit, but if you OC it I still think the 6870 would give you a solid performance increase.

My current setup is:

- Asus P5Q PRO
- HIS Radeon HD 4870 512 MB
- Intel core 2 duo E8500 3.16GHz
- 4GB of ram
- Windows vista home premium

Will this be able to run the game at all, and on witch settings? I play Fallout: New Vegas on ultra settings. When I stand still I have around 60 fps, and if I move slowly it still stays on 60 fps. But if I move fast and shoot it might jump down to 30 really fast and sometimes even 10... Is this a bug or do I really need a new setup? Sorry for a little off topic qestion :)

Anyway, if I have to get a new setup I will propably get a:

- ASUS P8P67 PRO
- XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5
- Intel Core i5 Quad Processor i5-2500K 3,3GHz
- 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
- Windows 7 home premium

Or:

- Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
- XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5
- Intel Core i7 Quad Processor i7-960, Quad Core, 3,2Ghz
- 6GB DDR3
- Windows 7 home premium

Witch one of these two would you chose? Both will propably run Skyrim on High settings. I would like a i7 processor but I really don't trust the Gigabyte motherboards, heard a lot of complains about them. And with the last one I would only get a 2 GB upgrade. I am not good at this, some help would be appriciated. And one last question, how many years do you think these setups will last? I bought he setup I have now witch you can find at the top 4 years ago for 15000£. I want this to last the same amount of time, I know it is hard to tell but if you have any clue it would be nice to hear what you have to say.

Thanks in advance, all help would be appriciated <3

The i5 will be plenty. Unless you're doing some super video editing, you can just overclock the i5 and will be perfectly fine. Not sure what you mean by 2GB upgrade but I think you're talking about RAM, and either 6 or 8 will be plenty. Just make sure you use a 64-bit OS. I can't really answer your first question because I'm a bad judge at what setups would run at unless they're brand new and will smoke whatever they're built for.

AMD Phenom? 8650 X3 Triple-Core 2,3Ghz
4 GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 1GB DDR2

and

Intel i3 m330 2.13Ghz
4GB RAM
Nvidia GT 330M

Will these run 1920x1080 and 1280x720 (and 1366x768 for laptop screen when I don't have my TV on hand), respectively?

Might as well put mine in here to see what the opinion is about Skyrim running on it:

Intel i7 920 2.66Ghz
6GB RAM
NVidia GTX 480 1.5GB
256GB SSD(apps/games only)
Windows 7 Pro
30" monitor at 2560x1600

I'm pretty confident it will run vanilla Skyrim without any problems even on max resolutions. I test loaded up Oblivion with tons of high resolution texture packs(QTP3, Improved Flora, etc) and was still getting around 25 FPS on average. Things started slowing to a crawl when I ran mods that added lots of new objects and NPCs to the gaming world like Better Cities and a mod that added traveling NPCs on the roads. Tweaks with the .ini files and utilities like OSR helped somewhat. It will be interesting to see what kind of toll a heavily modded Skyrim game takes on my rig a couple years from now.

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB shared L2 cache
4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB 7200-rpm hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory

It's a Mac, i know, I know, flame away....but do you think it will run it (& mods) via bootcamp??

Another build i'm thinking over, to order today. I want to ask one question. will there be a noticeble difference between the GTX 560 ti 2GB or 1GB version?

I dont think so, it depends on which resolution you will be playing on. 1Gb memory is enough for 1920x1080 or even 1920x1200 but ifyou want to aim higher than you may need more than 1Gb or a better graphic card

The desktop will run on medium/low settings, the native resolution is killing you (probably more towards medium). With the laptop native screen you will probably be able to just touch medium settings.

Any thoughts on the following setup?

AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor (6 CPUs) ~2.7Ghz
8192MB RAM
Direct X11
NVIDIA GeForce GT 420 4062MB
Windows 7

Low settings at the best, the 420 GT is really holding you back if you upgraded then you'd be set to go. Check your power supply and give us a budget and we can help you pick out a new card if you want.

You'll be able to max the game, even at that resolution the GTX 480 is still a very powerful card. :celebration:

Yes, you will probably be able to get medium settings at moderate resolutions.

Of the two, the best is the i5 2500k build.

I'm going to make another option. Since you you can definitely run Skyrim at least halfway decently, don't buy anything now. [FO:NV is a bit jumpy, so I'd blame the game for most of the problem.]

The HD7000 series is out Q4 2011. Since you have something to put a new GPU in, get something next gen... btw, it will be a die shrink to 28nm.

Then wait for Ivy Bridge in March of 2012, Intel is moving to 22nm.

Thanks for the quick reply Greg69, what I have is a Bestec ATX0300D5WC. I'm not used to working with power supplies, so I admittedly have no idea how good that is. One page I found listed it as 300 watts.

Would I be able to play on medium settings? I plan to play on PS3 first and buy for PC in the future.

Intel Core Quad core Q8400 2.66ghz
RAM 4gb
Nvidia Geforce 9800gt (i know it's weak)
monitor resolution is 1920 x 1080

basically I can get a stable 35-60FPS with Oblivion maxed with Qarl's texture pack. (about 25-35FPS with better cities inside the imperial market)

I would doubt the 9800GT 1GB [If you're doing 1080p w/QTP3, I'm assuming it is a 1GB] will max Skyrim @ 1080p, though looking at your numbers does make me think twice. I still think the improved lighting effects will put a dent in your GPUs performance.

I've been thinking about getting a new processor, however I am not sure which one is faster. Please help.

Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8 ghz
vs
Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.4ghz

I understand the ghz is much bigger, but I've been reading that the second generation seems to be using something like 100mhz and stuff.

Anyways, please help.
Thanks in Advance!

512Mb GDDR5 @ 4000Mhz = 64Gb/s bandwidth

Denk je dat echt? The HD 7790 wil be at least 3x as fast (I think, I hope... Plz God let it be so ) :mohawk:

1 gig ram

Your PC is seriously underpowered, upgrade to 3Gb mem and a Radeon HD 5770 at least!
