Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #13

Post » Sun Aug 21, 2011 9:17 am

I've been thinking about getting a new processor, however I am not sure which one is faster. Please help.

Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8 ghz
vs
Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.4ghz

I understand the ghz is much bigger, but I've been reading that the second generation seems to be using something like 100mhz and stuff.

Anyways, please help.
Thanks in Advance!

The Core i7 2600 should be faster, cuz its second generation (socket 1155)

The 2600 is faster but get a 2500k, the 2600 is overkill and you won't see a performance difference between the 2500k/2600 in gaming.

HD 5670 does the trick? Maybe at 1280x1024 it will....maybe. Is it the GDDR5 or GDDR3 model? If it has GDDR3, no way, vergeet het maar. :)

The 5670 is still a decent card and will definitely be able to handle medium settings at moderate resolution like 1600 x 900.

Was about to say that. Unless you in very heavy video editing activities a 2500k will be bigger bang for you buck 100mhz for $100 that to me made me want to 2500k and you can OC later if needed a few years down the road (like 3)

I'm curious to know if there are any other fellow M11x owners that are planning to try and play Skyrim on Steam. I am a bit concerned that Skyrim may be too much for this little laptop, even with the Core i7 processor and overclocking.

What are your predictions? Will Skyrim run acceptably on the M11x (Specifically the R2 and R3 models)

My current computer won't be able to run it (it can barely run Oblivion), but I am getting an Alienware comp for my Bday (Oct. 2).

How much are you paying for it... because I have the same specs (minus the i7 with a i5 2500k) SSD, 8GBs RAM 1TB HDD and the 580 under $1600

Depends if you have either the 335m or the 540m either way it'll run around medium settings.

Yes, you will get medium/high settings depending on the resolution, the GTS 250 is pretty much a re branded 9800 GTX+. So probably more towards high settings if not all high if your playing on a moderate resolution.

With a 300W power supply, is it even worth getting a heavy-duty graphics card?

I was looking at the GTX 570, but the thing pulls 216W...I'm not really familiar with how much power the CPU draws, but I imagine that pulling away 2/3rd of the power for the GPU alone will fry my computer. Any thoughts?

You would be just fine, just make sure you custom build a computer. :)

I still don't know anything about computers so I wouldn't know how I should custom build it or what brand to buy.

If you don't want to custom build (the advantage of custom building is greater customization and generally lower cost for a better computer), I would recommend going with Hewlett-Packard (HP). I've always been very happy with their products, never given me any trouble. They're customization options as far as graphics cards go are not great, but you could always just tell them to ship the computer with the low-grade video card then replace it yourself. Just my thoughts though, other more experienced people may offer better advice.

HP isn't meant for gaming. Just get something from Newegg if you're looking for a gaming PC.

IMHO you should be fine. As a matter of fact I think you are like me: Kinda high settings but with extra things lowered/disabled and a few tweaks here and there if you are not a very picky person
