Any opinions?

Upgrade to the Radeon HD 6950 and you should be able to get it on high

That depends on the resolution of that 46 inch screen. I'm playing FO:3/NV max settings on a 2.66Ghz Core Duo and a GTX460 on 1080p. Not too different from your setup.

Hi all, I have a quick question. Is there any performance difference between a nvidia 450 video card and a 550 video card ?

Kinda new to this whole PC stuff, and any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here's what I've got...

Dell XPS 410
4Gb Ram
Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.40 GHz (Sometimes 'canyourunit.com' tells me 2.8Gh, not sure that that's about)
Nvidia GeForce GT220 with 1.5Gb video ram

Can run Batman Arkham Asylum, L4D2, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Oblivion, DOW II all at high-max settings.
Can this run Skyrim with medium-high settings? Don't really mind maxing out the settings all that much. Thanks!

Ignore almost anything from SR Labs. They don't have any on-staff hardware Nerd, so they are wrong about as often as they are correct.

The GT 220 was an in-between card below Mainline, and above Low End business class, and that was three years ago. It was never a "Medium" card as those are normally defined. None of the games you listed have much of a meaning related to Skyrim. You would need to compare to Fallout, not to those games. IMO, Low Settings with a mix of Medium, at medium resolutions, unless you sacrifice animation smoothness.

So running Fallout 3 on max would get me where with Skyrim? And thanks for the reply! :D

The Geforce GTS 450 is a slower card than the GTX 550. nVIDIA seems to be much less helpful with names these days. The prefixes, though, still work, although with changes meanings. All of the GTs other than the GT 240 and GT 440 / 540 are basically a higher grade business card, or "budget" game card, not really Mainline gaming cards. "GTS" has become the prefix for medium level, although the GTX 550 is medium.

Nobody knows really. But many assume performance will be similar, because the engine it's based on runs on the same Xbox360 hardware as Fallout 3, so the hardware requirements can't be all that different.

If you want to compare Nvidia to AMD cards it goes like this:

GTS 450 = HD 5750/6750
GTX 550-Ti = HD 5770/6770
GTX 460 = HD 6850
GTX 560 = HD 6870
GTX 560-Ti = HD 6950
GTX 570 = HD 6970

Let's agree that all of these threads are pure speculation, and personal opinion. I've not been well impressed with anything from nVIDIA with a tens digit number smaller than "30" since the GT200 generation was released. The GT 430 isn't bad, while the G 205, G 210, G 310, and GT 520 are awful. I think that if you choose a medium screen resolution and even medium quality settings across the board, the game animation will not be smooth. It will most likely jerk and jitter from the overload. How much it will do so will depend on how well the developers have optimized the game's code.

I think the GTX 560 Ti is probably closer to the ATI 6870 performance. The 6950 doesn't really have any competition from Nvidia.

The 6870 and 6950 are already about the same speed, and with all the different overclocked versions of the 560, I thought this comparison was close enough... :)

Ever since the Geforce 8800 GTX, nVIDIA has concentrated on their high end products, and generally manage to keep AMD from catching up, but they practically gave away everything from the middle of Medium downward through gross overpricing. I think the naming and numbering of "20", "30", and "40" cards compared to actual performance has been anything but logical the past three years.

What do you mean how does it look? It looks 'maxed out'. The same as 'maxed out' looks on every other PC at 1080p.... Does this answer your question?

Yeah every low-end Nvidia card after the GT 210/220/240 has a name that has nothing to do with performance. GT 310M/ 440 OEM / G310 / 440 retail / GT 520 / blah-blah-blah. All you need to know is; these cards are not even worth looking at for gaming.

We can't really help you because you haven't really given us any detailed information about your hardware, but if you can max Oblivion then you will probably be able to at least play Skyrim. We need to know your specific CPU/GPU, but with 1GB of ram you will probably run into problems with that also..

No, you do not need another ATI 6950. One 6950 is already overkill for Skyrim and will max the game with ease. Compared to your laptop 335m, they are not even close to the same level, the 6950 being way way faster. Although the 335M GT will still be able to achieve medium settings at moderate resolutions.

Well, the GT 335m is basically a slower version of the desktop http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gt-240,2475-13.html, so you'll be lucky to play it on medium.
One HD 6950 is enough though, and with dual graphics you have to deal with http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-crossfire,2995.html

To find the CPU/RAM go to start and right click computer and click properties. To find your GPU right click on your desktop background and click NVIDIA Control panel and you should be able to find it their.
