Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #14

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 1:23 pm

My dad is looking at http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Predator_G5_1087022.html for his graphics work and to update his now aging setup, and it sounds to me that it can run Skyrim and The Witcher 2 (the other PC game I'm interested in) on max no problems. Your thoughts guys?

Gods, no. Not The Witcher 2 ("on max", that is), anyway. That game is insanely demanding, once you turn all options on, and to the maximum. I suppose it would depend on resolution too, but even so, a single GTX 460 will die an unhappy death trying to do that, in my estimation.

I'm thinking of getting a new PC maybe early 2012, now I'm hoping that the new series of Radeon HD cards will be out (7xxx series) would this drop the price of both radeon and Nvidia cards, or just Radeon cards. Also by how much?

I'm thinking of getting a GTX560, is there a big peformance gain between the GTX560 and the GTX560Ti?

I'm on a budget of about £700 and as I posted before, my rig :

AMD PHENOM II X4 965 (3.40GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3) - BLACK EDITION
ASUS? M5A87: AM3+ PLATFORM, DUAL DDR3,SATA 6.0GB/s, USB 3.0
8GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)
1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 - DVI,HDMI,VGA - 3D Vision Ready
CORSAIR 650W ENTHUSIAST SERIES? TX650 V2-80 PLUS? BRONZE

Are there any cheaper GFX cards that will be equal or better to the GTX560?

Yeah a bit too optimistic with TW2 :teehee: anyway, what about Skyrim on that though?

Google had this to offer: "Recommanded – Geforce GTX 460/Radeon 5850"

What that means, exactly, is anyone's guess. But it bodes well enough for GTX460 owners, I would say.

edit: Of course, veracity cannot be guaranteed at the best of times, let alone when "Recommanded" is used in a sentence. Still...

you need to be much more specific about your laptop and not the general specs of what the machine 'can' have. for instance there would be a huge difference if yours had the NVIDIA? GeForce? G310M 512MB compared to the Intel? HD graphics with dynamic frequency (the first one being far better).

Sure, Skyrim will run fine on it. Don't know about TW2. A bit pricey though for a last-gen i7. And man that case is Ugly. Looks like an 80s teenager's sportscar.

And I might as well bite the bullet here and ask the following; http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_5742z_1055483.html

Integrated graphics. No go.

My current setup is this (probably not all of it there but hopefully enough for you experts to make a valid assumption) :

Dell Inspiron 531
Windows Vista 32bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT

Low/Medium settings maybe. Probably more low than medium. I owned a 8600 GT and playing Bioshock (at 1280x1024) was not a very smooth experience.

Probably a better idea to get get it for your Xbox, as your laptop won't be able to achieve anything higher then low settings at best.

Intel Core i5 quad core 2.8 GHz

8 GB ddr3 ram

1 GB ATI Sapphire Radeon 6850 - diectX 11

WD 1 TB

24" hd monitor

I don't know much about hardware at all.. What would be essential should I decide to upgrade?

Thanks for the feedback! Didn't think the laptop would ever run it, of course, but I put it on there since some computer terminology still gets me confused sometimes (didn't quite know what was meant by the integrated graphics). And anyway, thats basically for my studies and web browsing, nothing more.

My current PC ran Fallout 3 just fine on medium settings, so I don't think Skyrim should be too bad on it but I'll probably play it on the Acer Predator if we buy it (and I actually really love the casing :twirl:)

Some computer terminology still gets me confused sometimes (didn't quite know what was meant by the integrated graphics).

'integrated graphics' = 'onboard graphics' = low-power graphics chip on the motherboard or CPU instead of a dedicated graphics card. Intel HD graphics is the worst of the worst for gaming. Well, except Intel GMA, that one is even worse.

And anyway, thats basically for my studies and web browsing, nothing more.

But for studies and web browsing it's perfectly fine.

My current PC ran Fallout 3 just fine on medium settings, so I don't think Skyrim should be too bad on it but I'll probably play it on the Acer Predator if we buy it (and I actually really love the casing :twirl:)

If you don't mind playing on medium; Keep your current PC.
If you don't mind getting your eyes burned out by looking at that...thingie; buy the Predator. :)

It'll run it but not very good, here's a laptop that will run it at around medium/high settings for $900. (you have to add windows 7 +$80 unless you already have a operating system) http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np5165-clevo-w150hr-p-3063.html?wconfigure=yes

The 410m isn't any good for gaming.

Upgrade graphics card to GT 540m, it comes to £663.99

Yes, if a good looking game is an interest to you. Otherwise, you're going to be low and slow.

Hello again. Thanks for all the answers in the last post, they were really helpfull :)

I ended up buying this computer thought.

- ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3, Socket-AM3 ATX, AMD880G+SB850, DDR3, 2xPCIe(2.0)x16, VGA, DVI, HDMI, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0
- XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 "Dual Fan" PCI-Express 2.1, 2xDVI, HDMI, 2xmini-DisplayPort, 800MHz
- AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Six Core, 2,8GHZ/3,3GHz Turbo, AM3, 9MB, 125W, Boxed
- 8 GB Ram

This computer can run the game on max, right? It cost £950, was it worth it? I am kinda bad at this computer stuff so I am just asking...
One last question :) I have 4 GB extra ram, is it space for that in the computer, would 12 GB ram benefit me somehow?
