Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #14

Sound card is more of a luxoury if you have enough money go ahead get one but most games do not support it especiallu multiplatform and they are not needed as a GPU is but they do help. Personally I do not have one myself but I spent $1600 on my current rig so I didn't want to add another $100 ontop of that.

It's a pretty high resolution so I guess it's Medium for you.

But with my AMD Radeon HD 5770 I can play Black Ops on the highest settings and I get around 60fps. Are you sure?

Well I have posted before and I got an adequate answer but it was one that I didnt quite understand my rig as it stands

Amd athelon 635 propus 2.8 overclocked to 3.0

4 gigs mem ( 10 gig once I get ahold of win 64 )

600watt seagate psu

Amd hd 6770

Will I need to upgrade my psu to an hd 6870 and will a 6870 be adequate for maxing the game on release and subsequent photorealistic mods or should I save up the extra 220 bones for an hd 6950 2gb plus psu uprade.

Ps I also have an amd 1100t sitting in the box thats waiting on a mobo for my bday.

Building a new PC and I had a question about sound cards. I haven't put a PC together in many years, and I noticed that most motherboards come with integrated sound now. I know that integrated video is a no-no, but what about sound? I'm getting an ASUS P8P67 Pro motherboard, and I'm going to be gaming on my HDTV using only the built-in speakers. Should I get a separate sound card?

Not necessarily. I had a Asus Xonar D2X in my system, and sold it a few months ago, as i didn't need it anymore (even onboard is deactivated).

The solution was the HDMI-port on my Radeon and my new AVR - the sound is much better than with the soundcard i paid ~150€ for. If you have the option to use an digital output then go for that. The only problem might be the decryption for the audiopart (but this can be done by a receiver/AVR/some TV).

If you want to use a headphone an AVR will be even a gigantic step forward as you can use a headphone for HiFi (most if not all 'gamer headsets' are simply overpriced crap).

Anyway, i wouldn't recommend a soundcard anymore, as the combination of an AVR/receiver with some speakers is way much better.

minimum you want to future proof your rig is a 580 or 6990 that is recommended cards for Arma 3 the game that will be the most intensive on hardware on the market for awhile.

I'm with ApocolypticBosmer, you should at least get high settings with a few in-game tweaks here and there.

I received a 'gaming' PC last year as a present but knowing pretty much nothing about, I asked for the one that sounded reasonable and looked cool. (Unfortunately a deciding factor).

It's an Acer Aspire G7700
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
4094MB RAM
DirectX 11
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT x2
Display Memory: 2287MB

As unreliable as CanYouRunIt is it fills the bar for recommended on oblivion, although for some reason lately It's been suffering from low FPS whilst playing it, although that may be my own fault because of the use of mods.
Just thought I'd post it here and get all your opinions, being that you all probably know a whole lot more about PC Specs than I do.
Cheers.

It sounds like it is mostly a issue of mods. The Dual Core bound, clock speed loving Oblivion also is not the best match for your CPU and hopefully Skyrim uses more than two cores well.

Questions:

Are the 9600GT 512MB or 1GB?
What resolution is your monitor?

You can get ~$60 for selling each of your cards and get a GTX 560 Ti for $200 w/rebate.

Thanks for the info. I don't have a separate AVR, so I'll have to see what the outputs on the motherboard are (if I need them), and what I have available on my TV. Hopefully it will just be a setting change and I can run it through the HDMI on the video card. I'll have to check and see if the card I want supports that.

I wouldn't worry with a HD 5770 aka 6770. In http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-5770-overclocking,2473-7.html FO3-benchmark you can see that this card can do 60 fps at 1920x1200 4xAA 8xAF Very High Quality.

(sorry for my lack of tech knowledge) Wait, are you telling me the 5770 HD is just another term for the 6770?

Kinda new to this whole PC stuff, and any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here's what I've got...

Dell XPS 410
4Gb Ram
Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.40 GHz (Sometimes 'canyourunit.com' tells me 2.8Gh, not sure that that's about)
Nvidia GeForce GT220 with 1.5Gb video ram

Can run Batman Arkham Asylum, L4D2, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Oblivion, DOW II all at high-max settings.
Can this run Skyrim with medium-high settings? Don't really mind maxing out the settings all that much. Thanks!

AWWWWW YEAH! But I still wouldn't mind mods for even better textures or Bethesda could offer patches or something for full resolution textures. Maybe an extra disc as an option to install full resolution as an option during installation? I know I'd still want a DMRA BBB equivalent for SKYRIM, if the bust size can't be changed along with the rest of the body for the player character.

EDIT: I also built the computer in my initial posting in this thread. No more pre-builts for me!

No problem. :)

I could kick myself for buying expensive soundcards and speakers for PC in all these years. Now i paid less (in the long run) and still have better sound... So if i can help someone not to repeat my mistakes then thats something i'll be happy to do.

My PC is a few years old, but I'd like to know whether I can get away with only upgrading my GPU and still be able to max settings.

NVIDIA 750i motherboard

Intel E8400 processor (2 cores @ 3.0Ghz)

4GB DDR2 RAM

Currently running EVGA 260 GTX (thinking about upgrading to Radeon HD 6950 or 460 GTX)

Planning on using 46inch Samsung LED via HDMI as my monitor

So if I keep my exact setup, would I be able to max settings? What about if I just upgrade the GPU?

Any opinions?
