Unplayable on Lowest Settings

Post » Wed Sep 24, 2014 11:49 am

I have an Acer Aspire 7750G-6662:

Intel Core i5-2430M, 2.4 GHz w/ Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz

AMD Radeon HD 6650m w/ 2GB VRAM

8GB RAM

By all accounts I should be able to play the game on solid medium settings, but I can just barely manage with everything off/low/minimum, in a window at 800x600, which is tiny and unplayable for its own reasons. Everything is choppy and stuttering; even the mouse in the pause and inventory menus seems to lag. If I jerk the camera to one side in game, it takes maybe a third of a second to respond at all. I've tried updating my drivers as much as possible, and I've tried a few mods to improve performance, but nothing seems to work. What am I missing? Am I out of luck?

Are you sure the game uses your AMD Radeon HD 6650m grahics card? What does the RendererInfo.txt you'll find in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim say?

Hmm, it does say it's using the Intel graphics, which is also the only option available under the Graphics Adapter menu in the launcher settings. The auto-detect doesn't seem to find the Radeon. However, MSI Afterburner does show activity on both chips, and I definitely have "High Performance" selected in the catalyst software.

You should contact Acer and ask them how to fix this. If drivers for your graphics card are installed, you are probably missing some additional program.

The video posted by Mark41 seemed to do the trick. I had everything set for performance already in the AMD catalyst, but I overlooked a few options still set to quality in the Intel graphics settings that I guess overrode my preference to use AMD in the first place. I'm now running smoothly at 1280x720 with all low settings. I'll of course try to get it up as pretty as I can now, but it's at least playable which is all I care for. Thanks a bunch.
