Unrealistic Jump Animations in Oblivion, what about in Skyri

Post » Fri Dec 17, 2010 12:40 am

While playing Oblivion, I remember when leveling my acrobatics I began jumping very high, then even higher to the point where I felt like Mario. Plus, the animations weren't the best in my opinion. Try jumping... right now... jump! No, really, do it... jump! ...as high as you can... DO IT!

Did you feel that? Did you feel the weight of your body as you hit the floor? I think they should add some weight to our Dovakiin when he jumps so I don't feel like this light. Also, you have to bend your legs and really prepare for that jump. Standing, your legs are at about a 180o angle. Now to get off the ground I had to bend them to about a 100 or a 110 degree angle. (I'm not sure exactly since I don't have my protractor handy at the moment) Now, our character in Oblivion barely bent his legs at all.

Do you people know what I am talking about? Did it bother you as much? It sure bothered me... but I can live with this if it's in Skyrim as well.

One more thing... even with a high acrobatic level in Skyrim, I still don't want my character jumping unrealisticly high. But, my opinion is nothing...

...What are your opinions?

edit-I wouldn't mind jumping freakishly high if it was a spell/potion/scroll, maybe beth will add a few of those in the new ES.

Just... don't make it as pathetic as it was in Morrowind.

Honestly we have to be able to jump atleast a little higher in the game than real life, after all we can grab ledges in real life, but as far as we know we can't in the game.

If jumping was only possible when crouched (like real life) then it wouldn't look so goofy

A high acrobatics (or athletics now) should still let me jump high, because that's the whole point of it, besides getting the roll ability

Just as long as it doesn't look so stupid (like in Oblivion). Whether they make it so you can jump like a kangaroo (with a high enough skill) or a regular person, I just want to see an animation that makes sense.

The jumping distance never bothered me it was just the animations. I don't want it to look like I magically float off the ground with everything about me staying perfectly still. Another thing that bothered me was that you could switch directions while you were in mid-air. I've tried to do this and believe me, it doesn't work

You had to try in order to see it doesn't work?

I think making the jump like it is in real life, or even slightly higher is too much realism and would destroy a part of the fun-ness of this game. maybe a jump slider would appease everyone but then.... how many zillion sliders have we asked for ?

being able to jump high was sweet, and what happened to scroll of icarian flight. That was the best item in morrowind and should be continued.

I'd be surprised if the jumping animation hasn't been tweaked/overhauled.

I wouldnt mind jumping incredibly high if the animations backed up the action. (And i had high acrobatics)

Less jumping more climbing pls.

Oblivion had that awful "Halo moon jump" thing going on.

I really hope that athletics (or acrobatics, whatever it is) puts more emphasis on climbing up objects, vaulting objects and landing from heights. I mean even daggerfall included the ability to climb, I don't think animations are an excuse anymore.

Maybe, just maybe, Gravity is quite a bit lighter on Nirn then it is here on Earth. Think of that?

Sure everything was a bit floaty.. Kinda like how a small arrow can send a corpse flying across the room.

I did not had any problems with jumping on oblivion. I thought it was kind of fun. Keep it the way it was :celebration:

they walk like gravity was very similar to earth's.maybe they should jump like it too.

the reason they have high jump heights is because there's no climbing. if they did, we wouldnt have to jump so high in order to gain access to higher elevations. but climbing (both for the PC and the NPCs) dont seem to rank high in Beth's priorities regardless of how much that'll add to gameplay

"Better jumping animations" =/= "Better jumping skills/heights"

Two different issues.

On height.... perhaps it's been so long since I had a character who actually worked on their Acrobatics skill, but I don't recall ever feeling like I could jump very high. Last couple playthroughs I've been using Oblivion XP mod, and didn't have any extra skill points to put into less-important skills. So, Acrobatics 5, probably.... which meant that, until I got to higher level and my stats were up there, I couldn't even clear a fence. :)

(Hmm, I should make a few +Acrobatics spells and see how high the jumps get....)

As for the animations, I'm sure they're not all that great in OB, just because the animations in general aren't. Wouldn't know how the jump anim actually looks, I never actually try to move around in 3rd person..... mostly because even walking in that view looks pretty bad. :D So, yeah. Better jump animations certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.

look better would be great. Normal height jumps would svck. You want to jump like a normal person don't level the skill up much, if it still has a skill. Even without magic your character is super human in pretty much every way once the skills get high and I am okay with that.

As long as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T36CY5TmSow is the jump sound that plays, and you CAN actually jump, I'll be happy.

I thought the jumping in Fallout NV was a little off (maybe it was worse in Oblivion/Morrowind cuase I haven't played them in a few years). The PC would always stick his leg out forward like he was trying for the Olympic long jump; and failing. I'd like the PC to land with more of a thud as well, like a Nord carrying 250 lbs of equipment would.

And on the subject of jumping height, I'd like the jumping height in Oblivion should only be achieved via magic. It was just rediculous how high we could jump in Morrowind with a decent acrobatics skill.

I know I'm jumping around a lot in this post, but I heard that acrobatics and athletics would be merged into one skill. Can any one confirm this for me?

Better animations all around please :D
As for jump height I think they could tone it down just a little, but it isn't really a big deal to me.
