Unrealistic stamina?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 9:47 am

One of the many things that I didn't like with Morrowind. "Oh I was running along this cliff edge, I'm out of stamina. Oh look, cliffracer it's attacking me, oh noez. I'm out of stamina, better get away before it knocks me down" *Jump off the cliff into the water* "Ah good, I'm safe underwater. Oh noez, slaughterfish. It just hit me and now I'm indefinitely knocked down in the water. Oops, I drowned."

LOL, so true. I guess they could make running use a little stamina (I mean if not anyone can run a marathon no matter the time. I'm not talking 4 minute mile here.) but make the stamina loss (from running) stop at 75 - 50% of max. That way you do use some stamina, but if you get attacked after running half across the map you can still put up a fight.

Makes sense.

Because you sold all of them to make money after having stolen ridiculous amounts of food from the local populace.

lol. It's not advised to steal ridiculous amounts of food from the local populace in this game though, you might tank their economy. That is going to be such a cool feature.

I think running across an entire realm would be very difficult, like you could in Oblivion. I know there is a sprint function, but I think there should be limits on how long you can go at full speed.

You know Oblivion was a video game, right? (Morrowind was too, Im just saying realism is not whats on anybodys mind when tweaking gameplay mechanisms)

You're joking, right?

You know why we have 3D rather than 2D video games?

Realism - within the game's internal logic - is the way to go. It is what has propelled rather crude RPGames into the more sophisticated, immersive and thus satisfying versions we have nowadays.

There seems to be this recuring trend where Realism is being dismissed on the grounds that A) this is a game and B) Ia fantsay game.

Of course, both points are fallacies. The world ES games depict should be bound to the laws of physics PLUS an additional layer of fantasy rules that either cancel/augment/ or in any way distort the first ones. The extent to which Skyrim does that will much determine its sucess.

In Skyrim, you can affect the economy by your actions. Steal a bunch of things from stores in the town, it will negatively affect the economy. Sell the goods you found on your adventures to the stores in that town, the economy improves. Destroy their mill, topple their economy. It's a very elaborate system from what we have heard of it.

I believe it was in a couple magazines. Don't remember if it was in one of the sit downs with Todd or not. It's been common knowledge on these forums for weeks now though.

I actually do like the idea of a separate sprint function. I can walk for hours upon hours without stopping (but after a certain point if I stop I have to rest before continuing), while I don't know how far I can do a light run, I know that it is significantly farther than I can sprint. It makes sense to me that a legendary hero could do a light run for much farther than a regular person.

And aside from that, it is just an issue of "is this enjoyable?" Movies need to consider "is this fun to watch," but they can at least get some props for realism even if it does make it less fun, where games tend to get points taken off if they do something that isn't fun "because it's more realistic."

i think when your fighting a dragon you gain adrenalin, which makes your stamina doubled
when the adrenalin is down then your stamina goes down

sprinting should be limited, but you should be able to get to be a really good jogger.

I like how in Morrowind you started out so slow. eventually you get so fast and the difference is great. (especially with the boots of blinding speed.)

No, Im dismissing the childish idea of realism of people who dont know anything about making video games. (I dont either, but I dont prance about pretendign I do)

The game SHOULD be bound by the laws of physics...so games before Havok were not games? Stop being ridiculous.

The decision in Oblivion to not have your stamina deplete while running is not a decision to "hinder realism". Its a GAMEPLAY MECHANIC that has its ups and downs. Realism has a limit: nobody would want to play a game that works like real life. If you do...then get out of the forum and...you guessed it...LIVE.

Also, it's not really unrealistic. I can jog at a moderate pace for a very long time. I can walk all day long without getting tired and of course, I can only sprint for a short while before I get tired.

Thus to those that think that Oblivion's lack of fatigue depletion was unrealistic, it's not. Running at a moderate pace takes a very long time to tire me out, what do you think a dragonborn can do? That is why just running around the world is fine to not deplete stamina. Now if you sprinted and it didn't hurt your stamina, then sure it would be unrealistic, but it does so hurray! :celebration:

and Dovahkhin's jog (at max speed/athletics) should be very fast, faster than any real man. he should be able to jog around a 3-minute mile.

Personally I'd like to see the normal run speed toned way down to about 50-65% of what Oblivion's was. Then of course base sprint duration around your characters stamina pool, which is pretty much what it sounds like it will be.

EDIT: On a side note; it's not JUST about realism for me. I just would like to see the overall game speed slowed down a bit. Ignoring the fast-travel in Oblivion didn't help that much, truthfully, when you could literally run from A to B in a couple of minutes. Of course all of this depends on Skyrim's terrain also, which we know little about.

The obvious answer is that realism doesn't matter in a video game.
It does, of course.
But I don't think that a hero who can kill a dragon with a battle cry isn't concerned on how fast his mile is or how far he can jog in a session. I think it should remain what it has always been.
- Walking you gain fatigue much faster than running
- Running you slowly gain fatigue
- Jumps drain your fatigue (and so does firing your bow and arrow at a novice level)
It works perfectly.

Hmmm, and on what grounds will you judge ?Game Mechanics? then?

You clearly do not wish to have a rational discussion. You're too busy throwing emotionally loaded words. It is not my arena. In fact, it's not an arena at all. We just disagree, that's all.
Let's leave it that way.

I don't really get why we got a sprint function when we could already run

We could jog, not run.

Fatigue and stamina in the same bar. Your stamina will decrease slowly based on rest and food. Fatigue is the remaining pool, but regenerates fairly quickly up to the point where stamina drain prevents it. So if you're hungry and tired, you can only run or swing your sword for so long before needing to catch your breath. The same concept is easily expanded also to health and magicka.

Keep in mind, if you passed out enough times in Daggerfall due to over exhaustion, you actually died from it.
