Unrealistic stamina?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 7:13 am

I think running across an entire realm would be very difficult, like you could in Oblivion. I know there is a sprint function, but I think there should be limits on how long you can go at full speed.

I think there is a limit to how long you can sprint, as for running, well running isn't very labor intensive. I may need to stop every hour or so, but what kind of game system would make you stop for five minutes after an hour jog?

I don't really get why we got a sprint function when we could already run...And running speed was attribute-based,could be buffed up with magic etc...Very weird...

By the sounds of it, stamina will play more importance in Skyrim then fatigue has in Oblivion. After all, in Oblivion what did you really need Stamina for? you attacked slightly slower, moved slightly slower and if hit by damage fatigue would collopse... else wise it did little. I am hoping in Skyrim they give a deeper requirement too it, else having to choose between Health, Magicka and Stamina each level would make one option rather redundant.

Running and Sprinting are very different things. I can walk for tens of miles, run for miles, but only sprint a few hundred meters, if that. I think it is fine how it currently is.

Constant running is a give in for video games. You are given the option to walk. But it isnt very entertaining only being allowed to spint or walk slowly. Even worse across a whole realm.

This is a difficult question.
One one side we got our realistic experience, and on the other we got our "playable" experience without getting annoyed.
There has to be somewhat of a balance between the two.

So, I'd say: Allow for more realism, as it in my opinion enhances the experience, as long as it's not as much as you start to get annoyed of it.

What's already in:
- Panting sounds are already in, which is great.
- A really nice head-bobbing effect is already in, which is great.

What could also be in is (in my opinion):
- The lower stamina you get, the slower you run. Eventually you'll run so slow that it's better for you to walk.
- If you despite all this keep running, your vision will become a little blurred.
- If you despite the slightly blurred vision keep running for even longer, you'll collapse (fall to the ground)

Now the question returns for the realism vs. playability question. Here, I'd say the same thing as before. The limit of these (slower running, blurry vision, and time of collapse) features should be to such an extent that it doesn't annoy you.

Heroic stamina, more like. Read lots of heroic mythology and you'll find the average badass video game hero is a pansy by comparison.

I like to see sneaking require stamina.
1. It would stop people from crouching all day
2. It would make Stamina important like the R3sistance said.
3. It's realistic. (I can run for hours, but crouching and lunging around is hard)

Running - tiny drain
Sprint - substantial drain
Sneak - slight to moderate drain

In real life you needn't to crouch in order to be sneaky.

So true, I'd like them to get rid of that game mechanic personally.

Or at least keep a certain level of stealth reguardless of posture.

Standing still - No movement, restores fatigue at good rate.

Walk - Slow movement, doesn't waste fatigue, but will regenerate it at slow rate.

Run - Medium movement, slow fatigue waste.

Sprint - Fast movement, fast fatigue waste.

Running and walking can be used inside battle while maneuvering yourself around the enemy and avoiding his attacks, while sprints are used for 'oh, crap, crap, crap, run, run, run' situations (ie. dragon chasing your ass while breathing nuclear bombs) or any situation where you need quick bursts of speed.

But
There is.

They already stated sprinting is taxing on your stamina.

In real life flexing the knees a little is enough. this is al the animation change sneaking should have in Skirim (at least in my opinion).

Indeed, when walking past 10~20 NPCs, it helps make you look suspicious. During the night time, taking a smaller position can help, but if you are wearing white robes, it's not going to do all that much at all even then, during the day it won't matter what you wear, you'll essentially be highly visable.

That's true, but if people go too much into realism with this it could become an annoyance.
Imagine if you have to change your clothes based on your surroundings and if you are character who depends on stealth, but doesn't have an right clothes to sneak in, you're [censored].

I don't normally make "this" posts, but the quoted messages pretty much sum up anything I'd have to say on the subject.

Not every character will be a preternaturally mighty hero, but I think it's fair to assume that's the default condition of a mid- to high-level TES character. Not to mention the more obvious gameplay considerations.

There is a difference from running a moderate speed, which is what run is represented as in most games, to a full out run. Now they have the moderate run, which anyone in shape can keep up constantly and then the sprint, which is a full out run which will tire you quickly. Basically the moderate run is jogging.

I would like it to be similar to what Oblivion had with Fatigue. I don't need the enemy gaining another advantage with Limited or low Stamina that takes forever to recharge.

One of the many things that I didn't like with Morrowind. "Oh I was running along this cliff edge, I'm out of stamina. Oh look, cliffracer it's attacking me, oh noez. I'm out of stamina, better get away before it knocks me down" *Jump off the cliff into the water* "Ah good, I'm safe underwater. Oh noez, slaughterfish. It just hit me and now I'm indefinitely knocked down in the water. Oops, I drowned."
