Unscripted Dragons......my spider sense is tingling

Post » Wed Jun 15, 2011 6:18 am

I do get the appeal of unscripted dragons roaming around like every other animal, and I'm sure it will make dragons feel realistic, but....if they attack any one, any thing, at any time, what happens if they decide to swoop down and fling that quest-related NPC 200 feet into the air? What happens if you happen to walk into an area where 5 frost dragons spawned? If you want to kill a really high-level enemy, couldn't you potentially lead it into an area where you know there's a dragon and have the dragon kill it so you can loot it?

I dunno, I have a feeling dragons will cause a lot of annoyances (and hilarity)

if a quest npc is killed his relitive or friend steps in. and even if it kills a high level enemy you still have to kill it. besides im sure the dragons are higher level.

as todd said before they can sometimes attack in packs i for one cant wait for that it gives the game a fresh element of suprise at times.

and yes i agree it could be increadibly funny :P

Won't they just have certain npc's who get "knocked unconscience" instead of dying like in Oblivion?
And Todd said in one of the interviews that dragon entrances are sometimes scripted, and the part you saw with the giant being thrown into the air was most likely scripted..

Well yes but what if they fling it 200ft away from you? Or above that mountain, they'll survive, but you'll have a hard time reaching them.

Most quest related NPCs will be protected or replacable in some way. For instance -- inside buildings.

What happens if you happen to walk into an area where 5 frost dragons spawned? If you want to kill a really high-level enemy, couldn't you potentially lead it into an area where you know there's a dragon and have the dragon kill it so you can loot it?

Firstly, Todd said earlier on that one time he was playing 3 dragons spawned at once, he clearly stated "That's too much" and that he got them to change it.
He said dragon behaviour is unscripted, not necessarily the amount of them that can spawn. I imagine they have put a limit, probably on 2 of the amount that can be within a certain space at a given time.

Secondly, leading an enemy to another is a perfectly legitimate tactic if you can pull it off without being the target yourself, I don't see this as a problem but an opportunity.

I like the idea that the dragon encounters will pretty much be random and unscripted........

I expect the dragons will have patrol areas - i.e. they spawn in an area and then randomly flap around it. Some cells will be protected, apart from maybe a scripted attack or two.

My only fear is that dragons become like a cross between Cliff Racers and Oblivion Gates... "Oh no, not another flamin' dragon boss fight!" I hope they have a lot of variety to their attacks.

The dragon bits in the game play video were scripted. They had to control what they were showing as "Hang on while I hunt down a dragon", isn't what Bethesda wants to show people.

Even if they say "unscripted" there will still be some sort of scripting behind their actions. As such, it is possible, and highly likely, they put limitations on the dragons as to who they can and can not pick up as well as some simple and basic conditions for showing up to prevent the player from being dominated in the begining of the game and not throwing too much at the player that they are just like "WTF".

Kind of obvious...

The Todd said, himself, that some dragons are scripted to camp at locations, but their actions are unscripted. Copy/Paste this so everyone knows.

Am I the only one that fears that dragons will be far too weak in the beginning an then level up with the player? :cryvaultboy:
That would be the ultimate worst case scenario.

How hard will it be to hide from dragons? I really hope my sneaky character can easily avoid confrontation by sneaking around on the ground.

I am not impressed by that... It's a single player game. . The difficulty slider should affect things like THAT (numbers of Dragons), not make me do a 6th normal damage against an enemy that hits me 6 times harder than normal.

The other thing is, of course, that it has been frequently reported on these forums that "Todd is clearly not very good at the game". I can't judge those comments as truth or not, but I personally was quite looking forward to hunting down a pack of dragons and attacking them en masse. It's THE ultimate measure of how powerful my character is.

Not really. Some of the stuff is, sure, but a lot of it isn't, or is at least based on something more solid than randomly deciding that the giant being picked up was scripted. There has been nothing at all anywhere to even hint that it was.

Spidey sense would be a good idea around a dragon I think..well done sir.

As to the dragons being mindless killers attacking everything they see...I am not convinced, Mr Howard has said that their behaviour has various parameters which will be different in every situation, I dont know what this means in any detail, but it could mean that the dragons will show different behaviours depending on where you meet them...as just one parameter.

I also recall Mr Howard telling an interviewer in one of the later E3 interview vids, from gamespot or IGN or something....(they were standing up speaking anyway, and I am certainly not going to look for it now..I will leave that to someone who is not at the end of a long workday)...that in one demo earlier that day, that we did not get to see, that the dragon just flew away....I am sure one of you guys can find that vid....I might have got it from a facebook page actually now I think about it...EGM or something like that...

Anyway, go look...looking is fun.

"We had to tone down unscripted dragons because it caused unexpected behavior"

And people will end up believing and quoting it for years to come...
