Unstructured enchantments

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:49 am

I think it would be cool in Skyrim if not all enchantments had to use spells that you could create. As in, there could be a floating dagger, or a cloak that would make you look like a vampire, etc.

It would be a huge step to putting the 'magic' back in magic, and it'd make for some cool magical items

EDIT: Ok, I have seen nobody who disagrees with this idea posting, however the poll says more people disagree with it than agree with it (18:16)?! Could the people voting yes, they would like all enchanments to be castable spells, post why?

You mean, that there are unique enchantments on items?
If so, then yes, I would like to see those.

That's exactly what I meant, sorry for the confusion. :)

Well, they already made it in Oblivion. Wabajack, the dead raising staff (didn't remember the name), skeleton key... I suppose they'll do it again, which is OK for me.

This is the first thing I thought of. There seemed to be a lot of enchantments from items (mostly daedric prince rewards) that you could not duplicate if you enchanted yourself.

I like having unique items in game such as this. But I wouldn't mind having some cool new visual effects for enchants.

Sounds reasonable there are enchantments that do not translate into spells but that shouldn't matter to a master enchanter. I would hope that one of the ends of the tech tree for enchant would be the ability to duplicate any kind of enchantment they have in their inventory.

It does feel very 'spread-sheety' if all the diseases, all the race powers and all the enchantments are just varients of the spell system.

More unique- content is always appreciated.

That would be awesome.

Did anyone see the movie Stardust? In the movie, a witch cursed a gypsy so that she couldn't every see or have contact with the personified falling star. How awesome would that be in the game? If a magical item made goblins undetectable to you, or something like that. You might be wandering around when the thin air ganks you and you're all WTF when you realize you hadn't gotten your magical cloak checked out at the guild, so their enchanter could tell you what you were getting into.

What i was thinking was more along the line's of the sigil's you would get from closing oblivion gate's, But instead of "fire damage/flame shield" it would be random enchant's be it scroll ancient talisman or hidden shrine that would allow you to enchant your things with stuff you just can't make on your own. So like the Gray cowl or staff of worms like was mentioned but allowing you to put those type of enchant's on whatever you want be it sword or hood or those shackle's you'll end up starting with. I am not saying to get rid of things like the Wabajack, NOT AT ALL. ( had to clarify)

I wouldn't mind seeing more unique enchantments in the game, I doubt it would be possible to have all enchantments be something extremely creative, especially since enchantment will be a skill in Skyrim, confirming that there is some way for players to create enchantments, how it will work in Skyrim is uncertain, but it needs a system that ensures the player can make custom enchantments. However, although at least common enchanted items will probably be "Fire damage 25 points" again, that certainly doesn't mean we can't have more unique enchantments, I wouldn't complain if at least artifacts got that kind of attention. That would allow them to feel more like unique and very special items, rather than just like common items except better.

That makes sense. Some would probably be completely unique, like the Wabbajack. Then there could be enchant-only effects; things that would be useful in enchanting but wouldn't make sense as a spell to cast directly. Increased damage to a certain type of enemy, items that regenerate instead of needing repairs, increased attack range, things that enhance an item itself instead of casting a spell.

Absolutely! But do you mean we can enchant things that have effects that a spell couldn't have, or do you mean things like OB's Wabbajack?
