Update on PlayStation 4 Mods for Skyrim Special Edition

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2016 8:23 pm

This is definitely good news. Someone already mentioned that this is now a promise fulfilled on Bethesda's part. I'm also sure that Sony has saved face as loyal users of the PlayStation (myself included) can continue to be just that.

Yes, there may be a limit to the mods that can be used, however I feel that there are enough mods out there that can make a significant change to my game and allow me to experience what I've hoped for all along: to enjoy mods on my favourite console game.

No external assets makes this announcement a joke. Just wait until people buy Skyrim on PS4 because of mods and realise they can't download any new armor, weapons, character models, or anything that needs new sounds and textures. There's gonna be a lot of pissed customers.

Well done Sony, you just gave Microsoft another customer.

What can you do without any new assets anyway? I'm no expert but it seems to me you won't be able to do anything beyond taking pre-exsting stuff and putting it somewhere else in the game; ie. moving Proudspire Manor to Whiterun or making enemies spawn in new areas. I'm all for Bethesda and Sony reaching a compromise but unless I'm missing something I'm not sure it was even worth the trouble.

You can do a lot with existing assets. After all, the entire game is made with them.

I'm the least interested in new textures and new models, and the most interested in what I can make with what's already available. The same goes for the mods I choose now. I'm sure there will be a chorus of complaints from some players, while others will be busy making mods for their own PS4 games and to share. Many of us already play on both consoles and PC. You won't hear much from this group in the complaint threads. Too busy creating and playing.

Yes, it's going to be more limited in terms of mods available, but I doubt they would release it if the mod variety/amount was severely lacking. We can't pass judgement until it is released, but i am certain that it will be enough to please 95% PS4 users.

Think of it another way. It could be a stepping stone for a future date when all the legal/technical difficulties between sony and Bethesda are cleared up, and external assets become available.

just to remind you only PC players can make mods. ps4 players won't get access to creation kit so they can't tailor made mods for their ps4 they will have to depend on PC Modders to strip down every other assets from their mods to make it ps4 compatible and frankly i won't be surprised if modders simply decline to support ps4 mods its not their job really.

Yes, as I said before many players already own the PC game as well as at least one console version. We are already modding, meaning creating mods for, our own PC games while still playing on our PS3s and Xboxes. This group of people is excited about making mods for the PS4, even with the current limitations.

As always, Bethesda is 'damned if you do and damned if you don't'. Some things never change.

April Fools ................giggles

this one would love to be a fly on the wall at Sony .........or......... we may have to wait for 50 years for the information to be declassified, to find out what really changed there minds!

bet ya it had to do with not letting Microsoft get the monopoly on mods .........thus Sony losing the console war

But the good thing is a lot of PS4 people will sleep well tonight ........tomorrow there will be a myriad of new PS4 SSE question threads ..........everything is back to normal

wonders if you can install mod's in dreams? ........... :snoring:

Ah, well now, yes you can...

Just dream of Skyrim...vanilla first
Then dream again with a mod change included

But the real question is can mods be installed in your concious state?

Well they didn't stay entirely out of the media. Bethesda jumped on their blog and Twitter. If what you said was 100% on point, they would have never caused the ruckus.

It is irrelevant at this point, but somewhere, someone got strong armed. They obviously both made a compromise, but we will never know who had to bow first.

I'd say that's better than no mods. But more official content would be appreciated.

Several reasons.

1) Their reputations. Not getting mods at all would hurt their reputations, while limited mods with severe limitations imposed by Sony will shift blame elsewhere. Some were blaming Bethesda for the state of PS4 mods. Few can reasonably do so now.

2) Legal reasons. Mods were mentioned in the game description in the Playstation store, so failure to deliver them at all could open them up to lawsuits.

3) It gets their foot in the door. Having established mods for the PS4, the inequities between the PC, Xbox and PS4 modding scene might very well pressure Sony into giving a little more leeway.

4) Skyrim SE will now sell more copies.

I really could not understand the rest of your post, but that's a good point about distant LOD. Without external assets, you will get vanilla LOD only, so new buildings won't show up in the distance and if you move a building it will still look like it is in its original location when viewed from a distance.

However, navmeshes are contained in the esp file, they are not external assets. So, there should not be an issue with properly navmeshing mods for the PS4.

Erzherzoghans, I saw this sweetie, so I will respond, but I do not wish to be thought to be purposely derailing this thread....so I will be brief and my answer is in this little box :)

Spoiler
In theory poppet yes. Your mind is merely a digital map of the world around you. The sensory inputs from nerves can be duplicated from internal sources..as when dreaming. During meditation for example...with much practice, someone imagined...could feel real. The problem is that imagined visuals, touch, sound etc are not enough......personality is the key, and that needs to grow for real.

I'm guessing sony caved because so many people were thinking about new Xbox's just for Skyrim mod's.

Sony was worried because fans are more loyal to TES/Fallout and Bethesda plus MODS then they were to which console they played them on.

I feel Bethesda may be the ones that bit the bullet and decided to launch mods in this state. This is probably what they were referring to when they said "Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work". So instead we're getting this limited modding experience rather than how it works on the Xbox One.

In the end, at least doing it this way fulfills the promise of mods on Bethesda's side of things and further indicates the issue lies with Sony.

Speculation of course, but I feel it makes the most sense.
