GI Update, thread #3

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:50 am

I play on the 360 and I feel the same way

I have to wonder what the reason behind this was. Now, instead of being taken to the screen we were most likely trying to get to immediately, we get to go to a radial menu instead! Oh, how wonderful!

It also makes me worried that I'm going to spend a frustrating amount of time watching my character play the "open your inventory" animation.

Someone explain this menu to me please. Do you pull the menu up with a single button and then from there use the four way compass to switch between inventory, skills, spells, and the map? Or are all four of those things tied to separate buttons (like the dpad)?

Gstaff's statement is reassuring and a relief. Thanks for some insight to us PC folk.

Thank you for confirming this. It's like I said earlier, it was just a symbolic night sky and not a literal night sky.

Well, there's a reason why GI is not very good at writing... They made it really sound like it was the literal sky...

The former version.

So up on the dpad brings you to the menu and from there it is a four way compass toggle? How do you get to favorites then?

No.
Like in Oblivion, pressing the B or circle button opens up the menu system.

up on the d-pad takes you to your favorites menu.

I would like when I select a stack of items (potions for example) to be able to select how many with the mouse scroll wheel up and down instead of clicking or dragging a slider.

I just hope its not as inconvenient as it sounds

Your complaining you have to push up on your anolog stick. The stick your thumb will all ready be on. WTF :ahhh:

Thanks a lot! So in the menu there are four tabs which are inventory, skills, spells, and map? Quests are with the map then?

So I don't have time to read all the other pages already posted about the latest update but here's something I noticed anyway, sorry if it's already been discussed:

It seems based on the screenshot in the article that not every skill has a constellation above it, and considering it is these constellations that light up as you add perks (unless I'm misunderstanding that) I found that a bit odd. So I'm guessing that some skills are sort of bundled together constellation/perk wise with, for example, restoration and alteration perks lighting up the same constellation?

I wouldn't panic so soon about the customized PC UI because it's not hard to make, there's plenty of time left. Modders can, Bethesda can  Does Bethesda want?

What does this lighting constellations mean? What happens when you do it? I'm so confused. So every time I level a skill my sky lights up? Or every time I gain a level?

"We're still planning on having hotkeys on PC. A couple other things to note from this thread:

For those wondering, the sky you see is the menu is not the actual sky when playing the game – it’s just the “menu’s sky”.
Also, the map is treated, meaning, it doesn’t look exactly as it does in the world. And with all the mountains in Skyrim, you get a lot of high views of the actual world. It looks really great, and is a feature of the game that always impresses me when I see it."
Nice, that's my immediate concerns dealt with :)

It's possible I'm misreading how the system is supposed to work. But I can't think of any way to implement a radial menu controlled by the anolog stick without adding in a second button press, or making it way too easy to accidentally open the wrong menu.

And I'm also a little concerned that in the attempt to make everything seamless, they'll add some kind of animation for opening the sub-menus. Given that I usually end up having to open my inventory several times in combat, it'd be frustrating to have to press two buttons and watching a two-second long backpack-opening animation every time.

Apparently quests are with maps in the form of icons but i'm not sure how they will be implemented though. maybe the icons will show where you got the quest and mousing over them will pop-up journal information. IDK.

I doubt GI got a PC copy, otherwise theyd mentioned it

I do not think that they got any copy but they went to the studio and got only the things the Bethesda chose to give them

He was complaining about the menu. Instead of pressing b to go to the last page you were on in the menu (like oblivion) you are taking to the compass menu and from there you press left, right, down,up to get to where you need to go. I guess I should of said:

Your complaining you have to lean your thumb to the left to get to your inventory. WTF :ahhh:

Can you explain to me what the deal with the constellations are please? Why is everyone so worried? I really don't understand what they do or the new system?

Em. No, every skill will. Thing is, in that screenshot, the corresponding constellations aren't perfectly aligned with the skills. This is purely stylistic. As you scroll left an right, the approproate constellations will "fly in" from the sides at a greater speed than the skills move. And only the constellation of the current selected skill is perfectly aligned. Kind of like a round fishbowl effect.

Though you can choose how many items appear, you can’t determine the order; items and spells are listed alphabetically

F***ing raged.

I mean really? Why the f*** not? What possible reason could BGS have for withholding control over the order of favourites? "Oh no! Not increased flexibility! That's not the entire point of the new UI at all!"

Otherwise sounds good.

Definitely keep your burning questions in mind. Eventually we'll be able to do some community interview stuff -- whether it's stuff like we've done in the past, taking questions on the podcast, or something else. Date TBD.

And as far as the menus go, eventually there will be an opportunity to see it all in action. That should answer many of your questions by itself.

Thanks man for clearing these things up. You can't see it, but I'm giving you a virtual handshake. :foodndrink:

I'm still a little confused over the birth signs business:

Three prominent nebulae dominate the Skyrim heavens – the thief, the warrior, and the mage. Each of these represents one of the three master skill sets. Each nebula houses six constellations, each of which represents a skill.

Does this mean that The Thief, The Mage, and The Warrior are categories, with six birth signs in each that correspond to the archtypes? The answer could be right in front of me, but I'm still a little confused. Anyone want help me out?

It also suggests that there will be a few different perk chains for each skill, so for example if you want the 10x dagger sneak bonus, maybe you have to make a choice at an earlier level to get some other dagger perk instead of silent running, etc.

Step 1: hover over the quest marker on the map (console users will need to center the cam on it)
Step 2: click on it. You go to the section of your journal that covers all the events associated with that quest
Step 3: close the journal - you end up back in the map UI
