GI Update, thread #3

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 7:40 pm

F***ing raged.

I mean really? Why the f*** not? What possible reason could BGS have for withholding control over the order of favourites? "Oh no! Not increased flexibility! That's not the entire point of the new UI at all!"

Otherwise sounds good.

^^ one of the things that made me go "wait... what? This is improvement?" I dont want to have to scroll to my fav spell or name it AAALIGHTNINGBLAST simply cause I want my most used/useful spell up top of the list <.<

I will wait to see it in action before judging it. If it's like iTunes there probably won't be a need to arrange it any other way.

I have to say I have mixed feelings on the menu system. I like the sound of this radial menu, and I've been enjoying the similar system in Independence War 2, but I have to wonder how it will pan out, given that this is an RPG. I have to wonder how its going to feel having to go into sub-menus to look at the various items I have in my inventory, and then back out of the sub menus to go into my list of spells.

However, I'm not prepared to light my torch, grab my pitchfork, and start marching to Bethesda's offices until after I see some gameplay

On another note, any word if I can close the menu with a single key-press, or do I need to back out to the "main compass interface" to close the menu?

Does this mean that The Thief, The Mage, and The Warrior are categories, with six birth signs in each that correspond to the archtypes? The answer could be right in front of me, but I'm still a little confused. Anyone want help me out?

Have you ever seen a real-life star-chart? The zodiac signs are by far not the only constellations there. Same thing here. Everything will be like before - the three "guardian" nebulae will still have the 12 birthsigns (note the distinction between birthsigns and just constellations) that were always there. The only thing new is that the other constellations (note the distinction again - they aren't birthsigns) in the nebulae will, for the first time, hold significance as well. In past games, these constellations were omitted simply because no one cared about them. Only the constellations trough which the sun passes were of interest to anyone.

PS. before anyone comments about the missing Serpent constellation, I didn't goof up - it doesn't belong to any of the guardians.

You must have about ten songs in your iTunes :P I'm forever scrolling through that damn application (although admittedly mainly because of the way it jumps to the song in the playlist if another one starts to play, meaning that I have to scroll back to where I was before the track changed... which shouldn't be a problem with Skyrim).

Step 1: hover over the quest marker on the map (console users will need to center the cam on it)
Step 2: click on it. You go to the section of your journal that covers all the events associated with that quest
Step 3: close the journal - you end up back in the map UI

What journal?

That has to be a misinterpretation on Game Informer's part (shocking, I know). I can't think of any logical reason for them to limit it to "alphabetical only". I mean really...that would be...well stupid. There just is no other word for it.

So my map will be cluttered with all active quests? Wow that's worrisome. I hope we can toggle active quests but even so if we have thirty quests I have to hover over all of them until I find the one I'm looking for?

They were pretty damn specific about it though. Any of misinterpretations so far have been because of vagueness.

Well, there's a reason why GI is not very good at writing... They made it really sound like it was the literal sky...

In a literal sense of the writing yes, but people have to be able to interpret writings, which is heavily essential in lore, thus is why I get in to so many lore fights

Edit: A great example of this is when I got attacked because I said that the items would be rendered in the inventory and you would be able to see them as you would in the game world and people called me a liar because GI never said that they were rendered but I interpreted it from what they said in the article and I was dead on.

I believe they're referring to coverflow. The screenshot of the Constellation implies that everything will be side by side and you'll toggle or flip through the relevant items. I doubt it will be a list like OB, it seems like they're trying to make it simple, quick and easy.

I think that makes sense. I'm afraid to say what I got out of what you wrote out of fear of getting it wrong :P

Unfortunately "simple and easy" rarely equate to "efficient and useful".
Ah well, it looks like it'll be cool; and I don't play the games for the menus anyways.

It all sounds really cool, and I don't object a more visual and more interactive UI, as long as the developers were fully aware of the problems we had with Oblivion's UI on a PC:

- Fonts and icons were huge for high resolution monitors standing right in front of you.
- You needed to scroll way too much in order to see all your items, mouses allow way better inventory management
- All windows and panels should be just a click away. All this back and forth and left and right makes no sense on a PC
- Lack of a more robust hotkey system. Unlike consoles, we have tons of buttons and combinations to play with.
- The HUD was highly obtrusive
- No intuitive way to navigate or zoom the map with a mouse.

If they're claiming they were actually inspired by Apple, I hope they don't embarass themselves. Those are big shoes to fill.

I always thought that navigating itunes was a hassle when you had a lot of songs. When I first heard them reference their new ui to itunes I was a bit put off.

Wut? Where did you get that from? They just said that we can "manage" quest markers. That's it. You're reading way too much into that.

Instead, pressing up on the D-pad pauses the action and pulls up a favorites menu. Anything from your spell library or item inventory can be “bookmarked” to the favorites menu with the press of a button.

PAUSES THE ACTION? :banghead:

That might be fine and dandy for some characters, but what if my warrior just wants to switch to my other weapon, or use a potion mid battle?

Imagine:

warrior: "my battle-axe is not effective for this troll"

[pauses action] manually selects enchanted battle-axe [unpauses action]

warrior: Slash, Chop

warrior: "my health is low, LAME!"

[pauses action] Manually selects potions [unpauses action]

Each of the constellations are unique to a skill. Within these constellations are perks to choose from. So picking a perk will light up the stars in the constellation. All it means is that the 6 skills under "The Mage" are the magic skills and the five magic schools and alchemy have their own constellations, which are their own unique perk sets you can choose from. Same goes for Warrior and Thief, which are melee and stealth respectively.

Your sight will be moved to the right or left so you'll see more constellations...
