Updating Official Patch with Windows 7 : IV

I don't know where this belongs and I've been pouring through posts all over the forums hoping to get the information without bothering anyone, but I've failed, so here comes my post...

EDIT: maybe should be moved to hardware/software issues...

I'm trying to install and use OBSE, in order to install it however I need to update my version of Oblivion to a more recent version. I've downloaded the most recent patch v1.2.0416 but it won't install! When I try to execute it, a window pops up and says the installation has been aborted. I'm using Windows 7 and I've tried running the patch as administrator. My Oblivion files are held in C:/Games/Oblivion to avoid the whole program files debacle. Has anyone else heard of this problem? Any suggestions? Would running the Unofficial Patch allow me to use OBSE? Currently my game is absolutely vanilla. I've done a clean restore and re-install, there is no expansions or anything.

When the patch installation is aborted, does the error message mention "Old file not found"

'Cause that usually means you are trying to install the wrong version of the patch. there are different patches depending on whether or not you have Shivering Isles and several different geographic regions for the non SI patch.

Also if you downloaded the game from Direct2Drive, you have to use the patch provided by them instead of the one from Bethesda. Of course if you did download the game from Direct2Drive then you are out of luck as far as OBSE is concerned.

Not sure whether there is a separate patch for steam.

Unofficial patch won't help you here, but you should get it anyway.

My error message just says, 'Patch aborted' with an OK button to press. (which really pisses me off because IT'S NOT OKAY! :brokencomputer: )

I'm playing with original discs and I have original discs for the expansions too. I just haven't loaded them yet because I want to get this thing working. Ultimately I'd like to be able to run nGCD, but it requires OBSE.

re: Unofficial Patch...I haven't played modded Oblivion, but I have played quite a lot of modded FO3 and found that the Unofficial Patch for FO3 really caused more problems than it helped in my instance. I understood to use it only if you were having problems that the UoP fixed and if you weren't having those issues, to not use it.

The Steam version and the GOTY retail don't need to be patched. The D2D version can't run OBSE if that's what you have.

Unfortunately I don't have the GOTY edition. I bought Oblivion years ago and never played it. After falling in love, modding and tricking out FO3 I decided to dig out my Oblivion and give it a go.

I also thought the Fallout UOP cause trouble, but the Oblivion one is polished and pretty much essential, so make sure you use it.
