Hi guys, I've been upgrading my computer steadily over the past couple of months, and currently I have the following:
Intel i7 4790K @ 4GHz
Asus Maximus VII Hero Motherboard
Ultra LSP750 750-Watt PSU
16GB DDR3 RAM
EVGA GEForce GTX 550Ti (4GB VRAM)
2TB Seagate HDD Sata 6.0 x2 (one HDD for OS, one for game installs)
Windows 7 Professional SP1
2 ACER 21.5" LCD Monitors @ 1920x1080 Resolution (Connected via DVI)
So to my way of thinking I am going to notice the most significant gaming performance increase by getting a new GPU.
My budget is $300, I want to stick with Nvidia brand (preference), though I'd like to go closer to $200 ideally.
Since a heavily modded skyrim is one of my main benchmarks for the kind of performance I want, I figure it's best to come here. I've looked at multiple GTX 960 GPUs which are significant upgrades in every category except VRAM which only seems to go up to 2GB. I am just curious if that loss in VRAM (while I know it's better VRAM it has less storage capacity) would be a significant factor in a Modded Skyrim on my rig, as in would I notice major differences solely between 2GB versus 4GB VRAM?
The kind of mods I typically run now that are the most demanding are Castle Housing Mods (that have a lot of interior detail in very densely packed cells) and NPC Companion mods (at least in my playstyle, I tend to "collect" them in one area like guest bedrooms which causes lag issues). Upon upgrading I will look into HD Texture packs as well though I'm not going to over-scrutinize on this issue, as long as they look good. I don't tend to mess with ENBs since frankly I have no idea what I'm doing with those.
So any advice to help me get the best performance with my GPU purchase would be helpful!
