Upgrading GPU to play, do I need a better PSU too?

Post » Sun Feb 14, 2016 7:37 am

Hey all I have:

AMD FX™-4170 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~4.2GHz

12 gb of ram (2 - 4gb and 2 - 2gb)

currently 1gb 7700 amd gpu and I'm upgrading to a MSI radeon R9 380 4gb

I have a corsair 450v psu and Im having a very hard time finding out if I really need a new one and which one to get if so.

Price is a big obstacle but will spend if I have to, I only want to run the game without hardware based crashes on medium settings with 1920 x 1080p and I was hoping upgrading the card would do it, advice please :-)

According to one of the pc power supply calculator sites, your CPU, GPU and memory are likely to use just under 400W but they advise a 500 to 600W PSU since most PSU are at their most efficient at about two thirds load.

I used http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculatorto check the usage. See what they think you need when you plug in the rest of your system such as fans and drives.

I would definitely upgrade. 600W minimum.

If you have the Corsair VS450 PSU, a system with an motherboard, your CPU, and the R9 380 4GB comes to an estimated of 385 Watt.

That particular PSU can draw from the +12V DC output line max. 408 Watt according to Corsair.

If you ask me, it's pretty close. And because i don't like AMD or Ati components as they consume much more energy as they should be :P - a new, more powerful PSU is very recommended!

A 600 Watt PSU will give you enough reserves, for an future upgrade as well!

If its indeed Corsair VS, then you definitely need to replace it. Power supplies are not only about wattage. VS series is bare bones, 80+ standard rating and a T4 power supply. The Radeon R9 380 uses about 285W at load and a 550W power supply is recommended.

Ideally you have a reputable power supply (many Corsair branded are such, many are not). A good power supply will be at least 75USD.
