Upgrading my Jeep.

Post » Sun Oct 10, 2010 6:13 pm

Ok me and my dad have been talking about getting me a car near the end of the summer. Well tonight I talked to him about all the possibilities and one of them was for us to buy my mom a new car, have my dad drive her Toyota to save gas, and give me my dad's 2008 Jeep Wrangler. I'll have some money saved up by the end of summer, probably around $4500. So I was thinking to myself, well why not fix up the Jeep if I don't have to put a down payment on a car now? So what I want to do is make it more "off-road" but without going overboard. I know that I'm going to get new tires, wheels (preferably bead-lock), bumpers, and some new pipes (not loud, but just enough to give it a little rumble). Now I know getting all of this done with $4500 is almost impossible, so I've decided to gradually fix it up over the next two years. However the only thing I've been able to decide on are the tires (http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/category/off-road/all-terrain-t-a-ko/tire-details)

So what are some good suggestions for brands that I should be looking at for the other upgrades? I've been looking at some sites for wheels but there's so many brands that I don't know whats good or bad. So can you guys help me out here?

There may be other places, but they've been around forever. I can't suggest any brands because I honestly don't know.

Why you getting beadlocks? Plan on running flat tires on the road in your jeep that isn't going "overboard"? :P

Just trying to help you out,.

What size tires you expect to run, 33s, 35s, bigger?

The Mickey Thompson classic locks are really good looking rims that have a simulated beadlock, if you want that style. I was thinking of picking up a set for my truck when I end up working on it again.

I'm going to have 285/70R17 tires (32.7x11.20). I'm putting a 2.5" lift on it too.

So basically 33s.

I'm not a fan of the tires you picked out, for any sort of offroad/mud use, they're just overpriced street tires to me.

yeah I changed them to KM2's instead of the all-terrain ones. The mud-terrain tires seemed a bit more suited for off-road.

Every jeep needs a turret mounted BMG.

Never ran a BFG, but those look alot better. I've got Nitto mud grapplers on my truck now, but I've had Boggers, super swampers, ground hawgs, mud brutes, pro comps, thornbirds, and mickey thompson mtzs.

As for bumpers, I'm not really sure, I've never changed a bumper to an offroad bumper, although I had some steel squaretube bumpers on an old for once. Could run into trees with those and not hurt the truck. Exhausts are another thing I can't help you with really, I know a couple buddies who have straight pipes which are obnoxiously loud. Might try something like flowmaster super 40/44s.

I have the exhaust and bumpers picked out now too. I'm just having trouble picking out wheels, right now I have the stock 17" ones on there with the stock tires. The main thing I'm stuck on is whether or not I should get matte black rims or polished ones. The black ones look good on black jeeps http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f96/jk-2-doors-show-me-your-black-rims-445747/index2.html scroll down until you see the last black one. But idk if they would look good on mine which looks like this http://www.jeepwrangler.com/Images/2007-Jeep-Wrangler-X.jpg

My truck is almost that color, I would put black wheels on it. KMC makes good wheels, I've got http://customwheel.com/custom_wheels/product_info.php/cPath/21_290/products_id/23735?osCsid=c64a662127d85a81170f2296d6658ea8, I'd put the black ones on my truck.

I'm pretty sure I'll be switching to either Classic locks or 17" Black KMCs in the near future.

Lift kit, snorkel, better gearing....uuhhh...those tires that bolt on to the rim so you can run them low pressure without them falling off, you could go with a soft top if you wanted to if you don't already have one. That would be for a jeep compatible with a soft top though.

ehh I'm trying not to go to far overboard, I'm having to save up money and I only make minimum wage. So no snorkel as of now, or bead-lock tires. :(

Btw would 17" wheels on 33" tires be a little funny looking? I'm trying to avoid the "big rims" look and if I only get a 2.5" lift would 35" tires be to big?

Hm, no clue, my friends are all about that though. I'll check with them a little later.

You're stock tires aren't 33s, and you said you had 17" stock wheels, so does it look like you've got big rims now?

35" tires are going to rub like hell with 2.5" of lift.

Ehh the look alright.

This is what they would like like the the pro comps http://media.photobucket.com/image/17%252522%20wheels%20on%2033%252522%20KM2%2527s/jeepin08/new%2520wheels%2520and%2520tires/100_2136.jpg

and with the mickey thompsons http://photos.fireclown.net/i.ashx?&mid=16040079&mt=Photo&standardsize=640x480

what do you think? (both of those are 17" rims on 33" tires)

yeah haha I'm trying not to go too big on most of this stuff because I still have to drive it everywhere and if I put a 4" lift with 35"s on it then my mpg is going to wayyy down. My friend used to have an 06 wrangler with a 4" lift and 35"s, he had to sell it because gas was costing him a fortune.
