With Skyrim and Rage coming soon I am planning to upgrade my video card. I would appreciate a little advice on what card I should upgrade to. Here are my current system specs

Well I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 5850, which cost me $250 2 years ago. It would be far cheaper now, and runs all my games effortlessly at highest settings. (Though my lower-end processor chokes up sometimes ) Geting something close to this would allow little money to be spent, while giving you more performance than you need.

I'm an AMD guy, and for your rig I'd recommend the AMD Radeon HD 6870, which has all the power of the 5870 plus the latest drivers and customization options. The most expensive one I've found was $216, and that's the one I'm buying next month. You can buy them for around $150, but these don't have custom clocks and dual fans like the MSI R6870 Hawk.

would a NVIDIA Geforce GT525M 2GB card run it well?

You should be able to get away with medium settings, maybe a little less if your resolution is high. Also as long as your other hardware is up to par.
