[REQ/Suggestion] Use it to gain it

I've always loved how, in TES games, you gain skills by using them. Now, I know that Fallout originally didn't have anything like this, but I was thinking maybe it should.

Would it be possible to do this in Fallout 3?

We wouldn't have to worry about having to jump around like a mad man to gain athletics skill, since Fallout 3 has no such skill.

And true everyone would gain lots of medical, but shouldn't they?

I used a Charater Mod like this for Oblivion. If I used my sword all the time my sword skill, plus strength, endurance etc would go up. If I never used magaic that will become nothing. I liked it.

It`s more realistic too, I mean why should you spend all your time killing monsters with an AK47, never touching anything scientific, but when you level up you can suddenly be a science wiz? It`s like Neo knowing nothing in the Matrix then through no effort, "I know Kung Fu!"

I`d like a Mod like that, but it`s probably too late now.

I remember discussion of this sometime ago... can't remember the outcome.

Intrigued, I mooched around the nexus and found the rather strangely named http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3155 - looks like it might come close to what you're after, or perhaps be used as a base for a new mod (seems the author didn't finish and considers it a beta release).

Hmm, it seems to make sweeping changes to the character gen process that can't easilly be merged into the game. And I'm not sure about it's replacements of certain skills.

Still it shows that it can be done. I'm looking over this right now to see if theres anything useful that might be gleaned.

There was a thread about this very concept, after the initial irony of modders making an XP based leveling system for Oblivion are now looking at a experience based one for Fallout wore off there was some good discussion. The biggest issue was one of balance, you could easily max out all combat skills thanks to the perpetual respawning of enemies, but there are a finite amount of locks, terminals and speech checks.
