I honestly think that's an easter egg. They put that line in refering to just that, Butch for Fo3. After all, he does steal your sweetroll...

It's a hat tip to Morrowind, where at character creation you get to choose answers to a list of questions, one of which was something along the lines of "Old [censored] gives you a sweet roll, you walk down an ally, kid tries to take it. What do you do!".

It actually goes all the way back to Arena, which is where most of Morrowind's tutorial questions also came from.

If only i could craft knee pads to sell to guards in skyrim....
I once stole a sweet roll on accident trying to talk to someone, and all the guards chased me and i wasn't able to yield...oh the irony!!!
between the guards and the little girl who wont shut up about working with her mom selling fruits and vegetables, i am tempted to just muting voice every time i go into a city....

Muting voice, that's what your sword is for!!!

They havent gotten as annoying as patrolling the mojave but theyre getting there. Perhaps a mod will come out to remove them or add some variety.

You mean Morrowind?

Anyhow those quotes never got so annoying for some reason. Maybe I just dont remember the annoyance but I'd almost want to hear them call me scum again.

Me and a friend of mine love that quote.. "I used to be an adventurer like you, until I took an arrow to the knee" Funny thing is I had that bug where the ice spike wouldn't go away and was stuck in my characters knee, He was talking about exploring a cool dungeon when I noticed this, only replied with "I used to be an adventurer like you, until I took an ice spike to the knee..." Told him I had a good meter long ice spike in my leg that would not go away made for some laughs til I reloaded a save a few hours back.

"Have you met my father? He's a steward up in Dragonsreach." "I don't claim to be the best blacksmith in Whiterun, Eorlund Gray-Mane's got that on me. The man's steel is legendary. I'm just asking for a fair chance" SO MANY TIMES

This lady's quotes make no sense to me. I mean, do you tell EVERY chap who comes up that your father is sharing government secrets with you that would certainly land him in some hot water?

You look sick, are you feeling alright?

I used to think this was the standard Skyrim greeting until I learned to look at active effects. :o

You can get it without actually being sick if you give your character a pale complexion. My Argonian Archer is white-skinned, and gets a lot of such comments from Arcadia.

@Niphia:

He probably says it because you're the first customer he's had in the last 50 years, the Companions don't actually buy anything from him.

Gray-mane, or Battle-born?

The problem with Skyrim these days is everyone is obsessed with death.

My favorite drinking buddy, let's get some mead.

That last one is particularly annoying, because I beat the living crap out of the guy who keeps saying it.

Maybe he's a drunk? Its not easy being an alcoholic ya know!

Which itself is a reference to the "Class Selection" questions from Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind.

It's a reference to one of the character generation questions in Morrowind. A sweetroll played a minor part in the question, and, for some reason, it's become a meme of sorts...

No. The Fallout 3 reference is itself an easter egg.

It goes back to Morrowind, where what you would do with if a bunch of bullies took your sweetroll is one of the introductions questions to help decide your character's class.

It is also an easter egg in Oblivion when rumors comment on someone stealing their sweetroll and... (the dialog trails off without an answer)

It may go back even further than Morrowind but I haven't played Elder Scrolls games before Morrowind. But I think the Morrowind reference is the genesis of the Sweet Roll easter egg.
