A space vehicle must move at a rate of at least 17 miles per second to escape Earth’s gravitational pull.

Not true.
Initial:
Eki + Epi = ?mv2 + (-?Mm)/r1

Final:
Ekf + Epf = 0 + limr→∞ [(-?Mm)/r] (as the only way to be truly outside the gravitational well is at an infinite distance) = 0

These will then equal each other due to the conservation of energy.

?mv2 - ?Mm/r1 = 0 |/m

?v2 = ?M/r1

v = √(2?M/r1 )

However, this is only the escape velocity required to leave the gravity well from that position unpowered. The mean escape velocity from the Earth's surface is about 11.2 km/s ~ 6.96 mi/s. It's actually less for current day space crafts as they first enter orbit and then accelerate to the escape velocity at that point.

Swedes and Norwegians will probably agree to this: A drunk of their native will sound like a Dane.

:P Wonder why?

Denmark got the record, for the most drinking teenagers in the entire world. :poke:

Unless you count the Falklands and South Georgia.

Subantarctic islands don't count.

This is simply a lie.

Clarification: When humans see green, the part of the eye that sees red is also activated. Therefore, in order to see true green, you'd first have to be incapable of seeing red.

There are about 3x1033 (3,000 quintillion) living things on Earth- 75% are bacteria, and .00000000000000000000013% are humans.

Long scale went out with the dinosaurs. 1033 would be a quadrillion quintillion or a decillion,
Most dust particles in your house are made from dead skin!

A common urban myth this one, unless all your clothes, furnishings etc are completely made from synthetic materials, you have no pets and never open your windows and doors, then it probably would be true.
In America, "the Orient" refers to China and Japan. In Europe, it refers to India.

Nope, not since the 19th century or so. But the difference does follow those lines when you refer to "Asian"

The average human eats 3 spiders in their sleep during the course of their life.

I thought this was supposed to be "Useless facts" not "Useless lies".

Humans don't eat spiders when sleeping, spiders aren't all that keen to go crawling over humans in the first place, and even then they would be scared off by one's breathing when they got close to the mouth.

Giraffes can also clean their noses with their tongues.

Daddy long legs (as in the arachnid) are nearly blind.

If a termite mound was scaled to human size, it would be taller than the tallest skyscraqers.

Mice like peanut butter better than cheese.

Estonian and Finnish are part of the same language group.

The Slow loris has poisonous elbows.

Small animals tend to get larger on islands.

The M1 Garand can be reloaded mid-clip.

White horses are born pink.

There is only one horse in the world that is used for sea snake antivenom, due to the rarity of getting bitten.

No one in recorded history has ever died from a sea snake bite.

Smilodon was the last feline to become extinct.

Japanese spider crabs will eat drowned humans, and are the largest arthropods in terms of leg span.

The robber crab is the world's largest terrestrial arthropod.

I don't think you understand that this thread is a bit of fun, whether they are true are not - and I am sure there are a lot that are just urban legends. Let the guys have a bit of enjoyment rather than picking holes in everything - OK?.

Wait just a minute, people are stating complete lies as being true, and correcting those lies is somehow wrong?

Surely, education and enlightenment are a good thing?

Well surely there is a better way of going about your business than being insulting. For example:
I think you've got it backwards, a fact is something that IS true.

"Useless facts" is that an oxymoron. I mean if it's a fact, is it really useless?

Oh well here's mine:

On this day, August 23rd...

1754 France's King Louis XVI was born at Versailles.

1775 Britain's King George III proclaimed the American colonies in a state of open rebellion.

1926 Silent film star Rudolph Valentino died at age 31.

1939 Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty.

1960 Broadway librettist Oscar Hammerstein II died at age 65.

1979 Soviet dancer Alexander Godunov defected while the Bolshoi Ballet was on tour in New York.

1989 Yusuf Hawkins, an African-American teenager, was shot dead by white youths in Brooklyn.

2000 The first season finale of the reality show "Survivor" aired on CBS, with contestant Richard Hatch winning the $1 million prize.

2003 Former Roman Catholic priest John Geoghan, a convicted child molester, was killed by a fellow inmate in a Massachusetts prison.

2005 Israeli forces evicted militant holdouts from two Jewish settlements, completing a historic withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank.

2008 Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama introduced his choice of running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

Now for my own:

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on Earth.

Annapurna is the deadliest mountain on Earth. A 40% death attrition.
