Useless files?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:37 am

Hi there, first post here :P
I've recently reinstalled MW and felt curious about the "usefulness" of these two files, I'd appreciate any insights you people may have ;)

  • Data Files\Sound\Cr\were\wolf pissed 12.pk
  • Data Files\Sound\Vo\r\m\Warnings.txt

I'm guessing the "Warnings.txt" file is safe to delete...

Thanks in advance!

I've seen pk extension added to audio files worked on by CoolEdit (and it's successor). Not sure what it was for, but it wasn't important.

Welcome to the forums! http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/8246/fishystick.jpg and enjoy your stay.

I'd advise against blindly deleting stuff unless you want to risk breaking things.

First of all, deleting any file from the official installation is just a bad idea.
And why do you think these files are worth deleting??

They look pretty deletable to me as well.
About the Warning.txt... it's definitely a remnant from development.
As for the .pk file, it should be as well - but even it not, it's not needed.
Each time you open a file, Adobe Audition, Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro, and Syntrillium Cool Edit 2000 must display the waveform derived from the file's audio data. This operation can slow the opening of files (especially session files that can contain many audio files). Instead of having to reread the waveform data every time the file is loaded, Adobe Audition or Cool Edit saves the waveform image in a separate file called the Peak file (*.pk).

Thank you all for your responses (and the fishy stick ;))!
I went ahead and deleted them... no ill effects so far, will post if anything weird happens.

Cheers.

While we're at it... what about the "old" directories? I mean:

  • Data Files\Sound\Cr\_OLD
  • Data Files\Sound\Fx\magic\OLD

Are these safe to delete? does anyone know if there are any mods which use them?

Thanks in advance ;)

I'll like to put special emphasis on this part of Pluto's post. Deleting random files you think aren't needed is a quick way to provoke problems.
By the way, I have those "old" directories too, so chances are, they are part of the vanilla installation. I wouldn't recommend deleting those.

Why do want to delete them in the first place? There's no need to delete files even if they are useless. I've never deleted anything from the original content and I've never had any problems. As previously posted more than once, if anything deletion of files can cause problems with the game. Even if you haven't seen any problems yet, it doesn't mean they aren't there. The files may be "useless" but other files may have dependancies attached to them that cause errors when reading them if files are missing. A general rule of thumb with any kind of program: If it's there, it's probably there for a reason. If your not sure, don't do it. And finally, just because someone here tells you it's ok (as far as I've seen no one expressly has) it doesn't necessarily mean that they know what they're talking about either (no offense to anyone.) You could easily screw up the game resulting in a necessary re-install which will take up unnecessary time and frustration.

In short: Bad Idea.

Well, there is no reason a game like Morrowind can have a dependency on these two files (the Warnings.txt and the .pk file).
On the other hand, as for the "OLD" sounds I am not sure whether nobody is currently using them, and even if, maybe some modder in the future will decide to (these sounds are not that good, but not all of them are bad either). If you know what mods you want to use, TESFiles ( http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1540 ) may be of help.

And there is no need to delete them. Not like they're taking much space. But it's up to the OP, he can delete the whole game for all I care.

When I was playing Morrowind on my old laptop, my hard disk was running out of space and I even resorted to deleting the videos after I have played through the mainquests. (Then again, the Data Files folder was extremely bloated up by mods.)
It's really not a big deal of work nowadays to reinstall in case something bad happens...

Thank you all for the replies!
I'm sort of a maniac regarding useless files in general, thus my question on the subject.
I'm keeping the "old" files for the reasons arvythrend pointed out (I imagined something along this lines already, but wanted to ask you guys just to be sure).

It's not a matter of space, it's more of a "those files need not be there to begin with" thing ;)

Thank you all again!

Ok, but still, why? The only reason for me to delete files is if I don′t want specific content to be there, like a mod. Otherwise I′m just happy if the game runs with no errors. Why provoke it?
