User Generated Content for Consoles

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:52 am

I was on UESPWiki and one of the things on their news feed is about Todd talking about User Generated Content for the consoles. Apparently WE can have this but they don't have enough time for this generation of consoles (in 2 years we are probably going to get the Xbox720/Xbox 2 or the PS4) what this tells me is that the next TES game to come out will have mods for ALL systems. This excites me because I always hated PC gaming for whatever reason (probably the upgrading and the cost) and if they can get this into the consoles I would forever LOVE Bethesda

What has been discussed is that the consoles can technically handle mod's, but that the manufacturers (MS / Sony) don't currently allow any content unless it's gone through their verification processes. So it's a political issue, and not directly under Bethesda's control.

User-Generated Content in Skyrim — April 21, 2011
Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed that the studio is trying to find a way to let 360 and PS3 gamers install user-generated content with TESV: Skyrim. The only problem is finding a way to allow users to download the content. "It works on all the consoles," he said. "As far as the 360 and PS3, right now there's not an avenue for us to make that available, but we’d very much like to find a way. We have talked to Microsoft and Sony, and so there's a chance it might happen one day, [but] I don't see it happening for release."
Third-party mods have been a huge part of the Elder Scrolls series since Morrowind and have allowed PC players to add almost anything to their games. The leading TES mod site, TES Nexus currently features over 24,000 files, and there is every indication that Skyrim will continue the high level of input from the modding community.

That is very reassuring.

Other companies do this but they complain about microsofts rigidity about the whole process.

isn't this thread the same as the countless "mods for consoles" threads?

Do those ones have actual info on them? If so I am sorry.

Exactly the same. I suppose this means there's also going to be a rehashing of the same related discussions that filled the previous versions of this thread, too?

Yes it is, and they usually get locked.

It's not that I think they shouldn't be allowed, but as stated, Microsoft and Sony aren't allowing it. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The consoles can handle mods. The issue is Sony and Microsoft allowing user generated content on their network on their consoles. Considering what can be made with the construction kit, unless Sony and Microsoft are going to spend a lot of time verifying mod contents, conflicts, and compatibility issues, it probably won't happen any time soon. It isn't necessarily a matter of time.

I understand the frustration but you also have to understand their pretentiousness because of the kinda backlash they could get, especially given the consoles' younger market. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody took legal action over user-generated content in a game *cough*Oblivion*cough*.

There's also the question of how they'd handle a number of mod related issues for which the PC community has written a number of third party programs (which the consoles would never allow) to resolve.

Instead of buying the Xbox 720, you guys should buy a PC. There's no guarantee that Bethesda will get user generated content on consoles. And you're really missing out, because mods are amazing.

Some of them are excellent, yeah. The Dragon Caption team did some especially good work...

How about buying the new consoles AND a pc, cos I sure as hell would not want to miss out on the killer console exclusives.

I have both.

I've owned the same game across multiple consoles at the same time as well. Especially when it comes to Bethesda (with the exception of New Vegas)

No such thing exists. Even if there were plans on making console exclusive content, it'd probably be along the lines of a shiny object. Which if it really is neat would be mimicked by modders within a week or two.

*shrugs* Anyhow as others have stated I doubt consoles will ever see a construction kit. To much potential grief for the companies, and it involves them giving up control of what goes onto "their" hardware. (Don't forget, you don't actually own your x-box or etc, they can strip any features they want at anytime.)

I think he's referring to platform exclusive games. Not content.

I didn't mean Skyrim exclusive DLC or something. I meant exclusives in general, like L.A Noire or RDR.

I think he/she is referring to games.

Why? Just because they say its possible doesn't mean microsoft and sony will ever let it happen. We all knew it was possible.

That being said, it would be a pain to determine what would and wouldn't actually run on consoles. New sword? Sure. 20 hours of additional questing in new high def graphics? Your xbox is on fire.
