PC user interface -wishlist-

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:50 pm

Let's face it - the PC user interface for the past games (Fallout 3 and Skyrim) left things to wish for.

The font size was a bit too large, the lists of the inventory consequently a little too small, the inventory list - especially after some time playing - a complete mess to navigate.

Modders did amazing things for the UI - up to adding sorting functions to look for specific items (Skyrim) or simple prefixes to highlight item categories (New Vegas). Personally I'd prefer tabs for item categories - including while trading!

As I've just come across it in another thread - save functionality could also be improved. Naming your save games should be a given on the PC, even if it is optional. Bioware does this neat thing where they order savefiles by characters played and let you quick and easily switch between profiles.

Since - let's be honest - Bethesdas games have the tendency to crash, especially once you go mad on mods a robust save feature is much welcome.

I'm thinking quicksave and alternating automated saves at world-space changes and before important events.

TL,DR List

  • font size can be changed
  • inventory
    1) search functionality OR
    2) prefixes to better find item of a specific category OR
    3) tabs for categories (while trading)
  • save games
    1) can be named
    2) quick save
    3) alternating autosaves
    4) save profiles for different characters
  • list-form for dialogue (with quick choice shortcuts - 1,2,3...)
  • full support for keybinds, including all keys/actions (no hard-mapped keys)
  • custom map markers

That's a quick bucket list, I'll add more as necessary.

It would be nice if they kept a list-form for dialogues instead of the controller face-button-mapping radial menu, if you're not using a controller.

Also, full key rebinding for UI elements like VATS or the looting screen, rather than having TAKE ALL hard-mapped to A and EXIT hard-mapped to E.

The vanilla UI will extremely likely be horrible to use. You can count on that, Beth doesn't know how to make proper UI.

The way I want the User Interface (UI) and HUD to be in the PC version of Fallout 4 is to be something closer to the PC version of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Drag and drop for items in the inventory and scalable size as well as turn on and off stuff like the health bar, etc.

Full key rebinding for everything.

The main things I want in the UI is to be able to see details and to reorder lists. One of the things that svcked about the Skyrim UI is that when you looked at your inventory, all you saw was a list of item names. If you wanted any other information about it, you had to click on it. The list was also only in alphabetical order. No changing that. SkyUI, of course, fixed that. Suddenly, I could look at the list and see value, weight, armor rating or weapon damage, etc. It even added a value/weight ratio! On top of that, I could sort the list by those other options! It made it easy to find the heaviest gear, or the most valuable or any number of things you might be looking for. Bethesda really needs to take a page from that and include that functionality in the default UI.

Oh, and they need to take a page from iHUD and make it so that the HUD is completely hidden unless needed or called up.

Named saves? That is my one wish.

Named saves isn't as big of one for me. Personally I find hitting `, then typing save "name" to be so much faster than going through the menus. I also often follow that up with typing in qqq if it's quitting time. It just feels faster sometimes.

Let them talk to the ones who make the UI for ESO. Not being able to pause the game forces you to make it good or the game is unplayable.

I've never had a huge problem with Bethesda's UIs since Oblivion. Mods make them better, natch, but the interface we get out of the box isn't that bad. Half of the features SkyUI adds aren't even necessary.

I'm hoping that modders won't need script extenders to add new UI or HUD elements, for the sake of modding on consoles. I hope every menu except for the actual ESC menu works in real-time; and that the favorites menu is designed specifically around that, so that we can still pop a Stimpak or some chems in emergencies.

I really want to see how the dialog menu controls for the PC. They made the options face buttons because that's literally what the dialog activator is when you hover over an NPC you're talking to. It isn't activating the NPC and then talking to them; you start talking to them, can do other things, then hover over them again to pick a dialog option. Very cool, and it justifies the design choice.

One nice feature Fallout 3 / NV have and skyrim miss is the shopping cart style trading, hope the keep that, disappointed then it was gone.

Fist off its no need for confirmation, you can also juggle that you want to sell and buy to optimize weight and money until you press trade.

Regarding alternating autosaves, Fallout 3/ NV /Skyrim renames the previous auto and quicksave .bak so you can rename and load. Yes this is most interesting if you get corrupted game or end in an stuck situation.

-Quickbinds for instant (I)nventory, (M)ap, (J)ournal, etc. All can be configured or changed.

-Quickslots 1-8 that can be completely rebound to any key, and scrolled via Mousewheel.

-Mini-Map with different sizes (Unlikely).

-FOV Slider.

Or, just copy Morrowind's. Fifteen years later and still better than the PC-UI for their last 3 games.

I'd like 1--8 key binds and an inventory that I can categorize.

Why 1-8? Once upon a time, we use to get 1-0.

  • HUD: Change color, size and opacity of elements (I have a feeling color and opacity will be there, but not scaling)
  • HUD: Change position of elements (most likely takes a mod to fix)
  • Inventory: sort by weight, type, name, etc.
  • Ability to create outfits via hotkeys: crafting, adventuring, relaxing, etc. (I want to look like a mechanic while crafting, but don't want to click, click, click)
  • Dialog/Quest history in PipBoy (so that I can go back and see what I chose/track the story of the mission)

Let's be realistic, this will not happen.

Bethesda will make a "joystick only" interface like in Skyrim, New Vegas, Fallout 3...

If you play on keyboard and mouse like me, you will have to wait until schlangster and SkyUI team release a "FallUi" for Fallout 4.

I have some hope that they noticed that the mod community attempt to rectify their abysmal menu UI in Skyrim is the #1 mod of all time on Skyrim Nexus, and took that to heart.

Another wish to add to the list: Stack weight. How much does a stack of multiple instances of an item in an inventory (yours, a NPC's, a container's) weighs.

Get rid of the pip-boy. That thing is just ugly. Or make it bigger, maybe something like full screen mode.
