PC User - mouse & keyboard or controller?

Post » Mon Dec 07, 2015 8:42 am

Just curious about those of you out there that will be playing on PC.

Have you used a controller in the past on games like Fallout 3?

Will you do the same when Fallout 4 comes out?

Is this purely a preference thing or is there some distinct advantage to using a controller vs a keyboard/mouse or vice versa?

Can we please stop saying "PC Master Race"?

Anyway, I plan on playing with K&M, although that Steam Controller really has my interest piqued. I definitely want to try it, although maybe not for a shooter like Fallout.

Only ever used a controller when i played Oblivion briefly on my brother's xboxx. Didn't like it.

Its mostly a familiarity thing I guess. Been using kb & mouse for 30 years now.

When I finally get my PC up and running I will probably mostly play with mouse and keyboard. I have a USB 360 controller I might try though.

I was a console gamer, then decided to use a tax return to get into PC gaming. This was mainly because of the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages; the site is pretty good, but when I was playing Oblivion, and then later Skyrim, I kept coming across references to the 'Unofficial Oblivion/Skyrim Patch'. It made me aware of the existence of the modding community. Unfortunately, most of my friends are still on Consoles, so I still do some console gaming. The thing is, there's simply no comparison between Keyboard/Mouse and Controller. The sticks on the controller are extremely sluggish compared to keyboard and mouse, and far less precise. In addition, Project Nevada has made it pretty clear that having a lot of extra buttons that aren't being used is a good thing, as it means that mods can add functionality that a controller can't get because all of it's buttons have a specific use. Now, I do understand liking a controller; they're designed so it's easy to reach each button without contorting your hand out of shape (I keep my left hand on the QWER key when playing New Vegas, so activating Sneak mode is nowhere near as intuitive on the Keyboard and Mouse as it is with the Controller). However, in my mind, working with a Keyboard and Mouse will provide a much better experience than a controller would.

It can't work with a game that has FPS mechanics, like, why do they even put FPS games on consoles? (I wish Halo could've always been an option for PC)

It probably wouldn't even work with the turn-based isometric RPG mechanics.

And as a last note, why do people keep coming up with flamebait names for topics?

Keyboard and mouse, I think. I have yet to see how conversations look and handle with K&M, but I think I'll roll with it regardless. Since Bethesda are fixing the aiming and making it more FPS-ish, mouse is always preferred.

My dad owned an N64 while I was growing up and thats where my gaming started (im almost 21 btw). After that he bought a gamecube, and I got a ps2 as a gift. So most of my gaming throughout the majority of my life has been through controllers.

I now own a great PC but its been difficult for me to use M&K for shooters. I play things like RTS, MOBA, and dungeon crawlers just fine. Shooters are just wonky for me.

TLDR controller probs

Keyboard and mouse works the best imo. When I use a controller I have to bump up the sensitivity quite a bit.

The PS4 controller is really nice though, don't really have an issue with game pads just prefer keyboard and mouse. :)

keyboard and mouse (got myself a death adder chroma and black widow chroma :D ). I used to play consoles a lot but have since just kept to PC. I see no reason to keep buying consoles anymore. The only downside that I've ever encountered with switching to a K&M is recoil control.

Sure you can aim at targets faster and be more efficient but buttons on a keyboard and mouse, but controlling recoil on a FPS is another story. On a controller you just need to hold the thumbstick down in the appropriate direction. With a K&M however, you will run out of mousepad after a while. Other than that though K&M is the way for me

Keyboard and mouse of course. Why use a peasants tool to do a Kings job?

I am completely unable to do first person/careful-aiming games with a controller. Therefore, it will be keyboard & mouse. :)

(It's kind of a shame, since it means I've had to skip a bunch of apparently-good Playstation games because I just can't aim in them. It even exended to the Uncharted games, because aiming guns is so fiddly. At least it was in the UC1 demo I tried. I use a controller for "console" games - platformers, racing, action, sports, JRPGs.)

Pretty sure mouse and keyboard has always been the best way to play a FPS. Allows much more control, quicker reaction, and simply being far more precise with your shots.

However, I've been playing games on both PC and console for so long I am able to use both efficiently. I'll be playing Fallout 4 on the Xbox One so I'll do just fine with a controller.

You are in NO way a Master race. I have both and I prefer the controller.

I have a pc but I probably use a ps4 controller as I perfer the more accurate movement and I only bother with mouse if playing a FPS online or really need the tiny amount of extra aim accuracy or a RTS. xboxs controller are just unnatural to me to fat and bulky.

Mouse and keyboard. Tried to play FO3 with a controller once. Got killed by a turret before I could manage to aim my gun at it. 0/10, would not play again.

I find controller to be more natural to me. K&M just feels unrealisticly fast and "accurate". It sounds like a bunch of you only like K&M cuz you svck at using a controller lol killed by turret

I will probably pick up a steam controller or an Xb1 gamepad, as my 360 controller is as old as the Xbox 360 Elite. (Still kicking, somehow)

I often switch between both. It depends on the game, and what I'm doing IN the game though. If they are both equally comfortable I use K&M for when I'm really into it, and gamepad when I want to kick back with a beer. (Too many buttons for Drunk me on a keyboard)
