Using Console Commands does NOT disable achievements

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 8:55 pm

What is the point of achievements anyway?

Personally I think it's a good decision, the console isn't just used to cheat, it's used to fix bugs like quests that won't start or finish or getting rid of a giant dragon skeleton in the middle of Whiterun that won't go away for weeks of in game time (If that seems oddly specific it's because it happened).

Now, even though I said achievements are pointless, that doesn't mean I don't like getting them, I do. I don't really know why, but it's just fun to see a catalogue of stuff I've accomplished. Beyond that, they're pointless.

My point is the fact that since the console does work you can cheat to get achievements which trivializes them more than they already are; this destroys any competitive aspect of Skyrim achievements which is the only reason I can think of as to why anyone cares for them.

I just don't get the singleplayer aspect of achievements and hardly see a use for them in multiplayer.

Everyone seems to agree achievements are pointless lol.

Bethesda themselves don't disable achievements through the console. That was Steam in NV, it detected the console key and then blocked achievements. Bethesda have nothing to do with it.

To suggest to try every combination possible of commands is ridiculous. Achievements have to be enabled through a script being run. If you use a command to directly manipulate the result which should give you an achievement, then obviously it might not fire the script and you won't get it.

I'm not talking about cheating. Like I said, I'm just on about most people who'd use the console to fix a quest, get unstuck or turn off the menus. Doing commands that don't directly manipulate the achievement won't harm you.

You are creating a tangent using Beth now. Again, not any company outside of the physical game has control on getting achievements. Yet, you create tangents to your original topic, stick with your original claim, don't go any farther. Again, I ask, regarding your original topic; did you test every command against every achievement? I already told you, that using certain commands disables certain achievements. Not because some outside force detects it, but because the commands bypass it.

A lot of people still too caught up (trapped) in WoW and Gamer Score mentality it seems.

Guys, it doesn't matter. At all.

That's purely a matter of your own opinion and your taste, or what matters to you. If someone likes getting achievements, gaming scores, etc, who am I to tell them they don't matter to them, when they don't to me. I really don't care about them at all, but I shouldn't bemoan them because there are those who do like them.

Achievements are for little babies that don't get attention from their mommies and daddies.

Well, this topic went a bit downhill.

I knew the Skyrim forums were bad but I didn't think they were this bad. The sheer immaturity of "achievements are pointless" and "for babies" or whatever, and posts that are created for the sole purpose of sparking an argument are pretty pathetic. Achievements give me and others a little sense of personal achievement, and therefore aren't pointless to me. Besides, I play Steam in online mode, and my OCD won't let me have certain achievements while not having others I should have. I wanted to know if simple commands (like tcl, tgm, additem, tm) can be used without disabling achivements, and I found out they can.

If you don't like achievements, then you can just [censored] off. Nobody is forcing you to use them or pay attention to them, so I fail to see how "OMG ACHIEVEMNTS" posts are productive in any shape or form.
But for those who use the console and who also want achievements, my tests show that the console does not disable them. That's all the point of this topic is, to get rid of a lot of the rumours that opening the console will disable achievements for that pay session.

It's pretty pathetic to be honest.
