Using mods after years away

Hi, all!

So I'm returning to Oblivion after having not played it for a few years and I'm keen to mod it and improve it.

I've given it a go after reading a few threads and watching a few videos and there doesn't seem to be a great deal of consensus.

It seems to me that the Oblivion modding community has diminished since its heyday, which is to be expected, but it does mean that many mods are left unfinished or unpatched.

Similarly some mods necessitate OMM while others absolutely insist on the use of NMM.

My question is: Is there any way to determine which will be the most effective of the two, or even other options, and is it possible to safely use these programs in conjunction with each other and thus have all your favourite mods running happily alongside each other?

I've tried to find answers to this but I haven't found anything especially concise on the topic.

Any advice is appreciated as are any comprehensive guides on this sort of thing. Bash/Mash baffle me for example :P

Thank you!
