Ustengrav Dragon Soul

Post » Tue Jan 01, 2013 5:40 pm

If you return to Jurgen Windcaller's tomb after completing it and interact with his grave, you absorb a dragon soul. Assuming this makes him Dragonborn and that it is his soul that is absorbed, does this mean that the soul of a Dragonborn stays in the corpse like a regular dragon upon death? If it's not his soul then whose was it?

Maybe you simply took some of his mastery of the Thu'um? The other greybeards all gifted you with a "soul" didn't they?

They give you the direct knowledge of a shout but in the tomb it specifies that you have absorbed a dragon soul.

Jurgen WIndcaller was a psuedo-dragon-man, just like Ysgramor.

I can imagine the Greybears getting a bit miffed in case they find out.

I honestly always asked myself the same thing. I think it's the case with a regular dragon, then why not the same with "Dragon trapped inside a humanoids body"?

I think it's no coincedence that Jurgen the Calm was able to take on 17 Thu'um Masters at the same time in his hay day and that he has a Dragon Soul waiting for you at Ustengrav.

Dragonborn have the souls of dragons. I guess it stays in their body until it is absorbed.

Presumably this would mean they could be resurrected? It would be pretty sad if my Dragonborn didn't get to go to Sovngarde but instead was forced to sit in a tomb.

What the Dovahkiin absorbed was probably knowledge or power, like he did with the Greybeards and Paarth.

If it were Jurgen's actual soul, someone better come up with a good story about what he's doing in Sovngarde.

but it clearly states that you gained a dragon soul I wonder if it happened to another dragonborn before us, that would go a long way to explaining things I think

By that logic, the game also clearly states that Whiterun, jewel of Skyrim, is inhabited by three dozen people.

Gameplay =/= Lore.

Perhaps the souls of Dragonborns are a duality of sorts.....

There is a human soul (which goes to Sovngarde upon your death) fused with a Dragonsould (which remains behind in your body)?

Or its just a gameplay mechanic that they didn't really think through and we should ignore it.

Yup I am with this, getting general dragon souls means just absorbing knowledge but you still need words how to use it, Grey beards give both in two steps, first word then knowledge.

both are sound theories but this bein beth these days I'm guessing poorly thought out gameplay mechanic.....but never ignore it, that never solves anything

The duality would make sense if we knew any other instance of a mortal body housing 2 souls and one of which is a very powerful one and the other is a black soul....I'd say it was just a reward gameplay mechanism, but then the question would be what held the dragon soul....
My theory:- Jurgen had a lifetime of meditation on the words of power which are the source of a dragons power, this meditation makes his own soul closer and closer to that of dovha and this is what the other practioners of the Way of The Voice try to achive..

Doesn't explain how his sould is simultaneously in Sovngarde and in some tomb....
